To show a countdown in the actual YouTube Live video, create a “Starting soon” scene in OBS Studio, add a timer as a browser source, text source, or countdown video, then switch to your meditation scene when it reaches zero. A scheduled YouTube stream can give viewers an upcoming watch page and, for eligible channels, a trailer—but that is separate from a countdown graphic in the live picture.
Build a “Starting soon” scene in OBS
- Create two scenes. In OBS, make a scene called “Starting soon” and another for the meditation. Scenes are made from sources such as text, browser, image, and media sources. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Add the countdown to the first scene. Choose one of the methods below, then position and size it in the preview so it is readable without overwhelming the screen.
- Start the stream with “Starting soon” visible. Check the program output—not just the editing preview—to make sure the timer appears as intended. If you include background audio, make sure it is intentional and that you have the rights to use it.
- Switch to the meditation scene at zero. If your timer will not trigger a scene change, make the switch manually as part of your host checklist.
- Rehearse before the public session. Use a private or unlisted rehearsal to check that the timer starts at the right time, does not unexpectedly reset, fits the output, and does not leave a blank screen or restart at zero.
Choose how the timer appears
Browser source: a styled countdown page
Add a Browser Source in the “Starting soon” scene and enter the countdown page URL. OBS embeds a web page in the scene, with configurable URL and viewport dimensions; its documentation lists 800 × 600 as the default viewport and 30 FPS as the default custom frame rate. Those are defaults, not recommended full-screen overlay settings. Check that the page loads and the timer behaves correctly before going live. See OBS Browser Source documentation.
Text source: a simple editable display
Add a text source and use a timer mechanism, script, or file to update the displayed value. OBS text sources can read text from a file, which can be useful if another process updates the timer text. The available text-source names and options can vary by operating system. See OBS Text Sources.
Media source: a pre-rendered countdown
Add the countdown file as a media source. This is straightforward when you want a fixed visual and duration, but check playback and transition timing in advance. The scene change may need to be manual, and any audio in the file must be cleared for use. OBS lists media sources among its supported scene source types in the Sources Guide.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make the pre-roll feel right for meditation
Treat the countdown as a quiet arrival period: show the remaining time clearly and consider a brief instruction such as “Find a comfortable seat and settle in.” Decide beforehand whether the pre-roll is silent or includes ambient sound. There is no established ideal countdown length or meditation-specific design standard in the cited platform documentation, so choose a duration that fits your session and rehearse it.
Understand YouTube’s scheduled stream and Premiere options
Scheduling a YouTube Live stream can make it appear as an upcoming event, where viewers may choose “Notify me.” Eligible creators can also add a trailer to a scheduled stream. YouTube’s stated trailer requirements are 15 seconds to 3 minutes long, and eligibility requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. These features affect the watch page before the broadcast; they do not put a custom countdown overlay into the outgoing live video. Check YouTube’s live-stream settings help for current details.

YouTube documents a native two-minute countdown theme for Premieres. A Premiere is a scheduled prerecorded video experience, not an ordinary live guided meditation, so do not rely on its countdown theme as a live-stream overlay. See YouTube’s Premiere customization help.
When to use an OBS script
OBS supports Lua and Python scripts through Tools > Scripts, so scripting can enable custom timer behavior. Script calls and error handling require care; do not assume an unreviewed community script is an official OBS feature. Consult the OBS Scripting Guide and test any script in a rehearsal before relying on it live.

Common countdown problems and fixes
- The browser source is blank or stuck: Check the entered URL and network access, then confirm the page loads and counts down outside the scene. Rehearse again with the source in OBS.
- The timer starts at the wrong time or resets: Confirm when the timer begins and whether changing scenes reloads or resets its source. If you cannot verify automatic behavior, keep the countdown scene visible for the full timer and switch manually at zero.
- The countdown ends on a blank screen or loops: Test the full media file or timer end state. Plan the transition in advance rather than assuming the source will switch scenes for you.
- The timer is hard to read: Check the program output at the stream’s intended viewing size; adjust the source’s dimensions and placement before the session.
- Unexpected audio plays during the wait: Review the audio from every active source and the countdown file, then mute or remove anything unintended. Use only audio you have permission to broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a guided meditation made from an uploaded recording or playlist, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera session, and a countdown still needs to be part of your uploaded video if you want it in the program.
