Set up a playlist that loops in OBS
- Install VLC if needed. The VLC Video Source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS lists the source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide documents these requirements.
- Add the source. In OBS, go to the Sources dock, click +, and choose VLC Video Source. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how to add sources.
- Load and order the lessons. Open the VLC Video Source properties and add the recorded lesson files to its playlist in the sequence you want them played. Check the order before going live or recording.
- Enable the playlist loop. In the source properties, turn on Loop Playlist. OBS describes this setting as controlling whether the source restarts after it has run out of media files. Once the final item finishes, playback returns to the start of the playlist.
- Keep shuffle off for a fixed lesson sequence. Shuffle Playlist is a separate setting. Leave it off when students should see lessons in the listed order; OBS documents off as its default.
Choose the right OBS source

For a recorded lesson sequence, the distinction matters: a Media Source can repeat one lesson, while the VLC Video Source’s playlist control restarts the set of lessons.
Optional alternative for advanced playlist editing
The OBS Forums resource Media Playlist Source by CodeYan is a third-party plugin alternative. Its listed features include editing a playlist without restarting the video, plus shuffle and restart options. The resource page lists version 0.1.3 and Windows, macOS, and Linux support; it says versions beginning at 0.1.0 require OBS Studio 31 or later. Check the plugin page for current compatibility before installing. For simply restarting a playlist after its last video, the built-in VLC Video Source does the job without a plugin.
Check the loop before relying on it
- Confirm every lesson appears in the VLC Video Source playlist and in the intended order.
- Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on that VLC Video Source, not just Loop on a Media Source.
- Confirm Shuffle Playlist is off if the lessons must play in sequence.
- Test through the end of the final file to verify playback returns to the first playlist item.
The OBS documentation describing these controls is dated January 11, 2022. Interface labels can change between releases, so check the current source properties if your version presents a different layout.

Troubleshooting
VLC Video Source is missing
Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, use the 64-bit VLC installation; OBS specifies that the architectures must match.
The same lesson repeats instead of the playlist
You may have added a single-file Media Source and enabled its Loop option. Add the files to a VLC Video Source playlist and enable Loop Playlist.

The playlist starts over in a different order
Turn off Shuffle Playlist, then review the playlist order in the source properties.
Playback stops at the final video
Open the VLC Video Source properties and check that Loop Playlist is enabled. Make sure the videos are in that source’s playlist; a loop setting on a separate Media Source only repeats its individual file.
