To make OBS retry after a connection drop, open Settings → Output, enable Automatically Reconnect, set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries, then apply the changes. These controls tell OBS to try connecting again; they cannot restore a failed internet connection or guarantee that YouTube will keep a broadcast active through a long outage.
Enable automatic reconnect in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose values for Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. There is no universally recommended value: choose settings that make sense for the interruptions you expect, and remember that retries only help once your network path is working again.
- Select Apply to save the settings.
The English OBS interface uses those control names. Layouts and labels can vary by installed version, so check the equivalent controls in your release. The labels are documented in the OBS English UI localization.
Test the stream before you need recovery
Before an important broadcast, test the encoder and your upload connection. YouTube recommends checking the upload bitrate, choosing stream quality that fits the available connection, and watching stream health and messages in Live Control Room. A test can expose a bitrate or connection problem before it interrupts a live programme. See YouTube’s guide to live encoder settings.
What to do during and after an outage
Let OBS retry while you restore the connection
If OBS loses its connection, allow it to make the configured attempts while you check whether internet access has returned. Automatic reconnect retries the connection to the streaming server; it does not repair your router, ISP service, or the route between your network and the ingest server. OBS notes that intermittent disconnections can stem from network issues between the computer and remote server, often outside the application’s control. Verify recovery in OBS and YouTube
After connectivity returns, check OBS’s connection status, then open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that it is receiving data. Review stream health and any encoder messages. If OBS appears connected but YouTube is not receiving data, check the encoder configuration and outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting flow recommends checking that the encoder is running and that the outbound internet connection is strong; if the connection remains faulty, contact your ISP. A long interruption may outlast the broadcast YouTube is prepared to maintain. Reconnection attempts do not guarantee that the original live event will remain active; use the status and messages in Live Control Room to determine whether the event is still receiving the stream.

Reduce the chance of another drop
- Use Ethernet where practical. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. As OBS puts it, “It’s recommended to use a wired connection when streaming.” An Ethernet cable can improve the local link, but it cannot fix an ISP outage.
- Set bitrate to your stable upload capacity. OBS advises lowering bitrate according to stable upload speed. YouTube likewise recommends matching stream quality to connection capacity. A lower bitrate can reduce connection strain, but it also reduces video quality.
- Investigate the network path. OBS lists VPN instability, security software interference, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi instability, faulty router/modem/cabling/network equipment, and ISP congestion as possible causes. Change one factor at a time so you can see whether it helps.
- Try a different server if available. OBS includes trying another server among its troubleshooting suggestions. The available choices depend on the configuration; this does not mean a geographically selectable YouTube ingest server is available in every setup.
- On Windows, consider network optimizations and TCP pacing. OBS includes these as troubleshooting options for Windows. Their availability and effect depend on the system and network.
- Leave Bind to IP at Default unless troubleshooting calls for a test. OBS suggests Default; testing IPv4-only is an option. If it makes no difference, OBS recommends returning to IPv4 and IPv6.
- Consider dynamic bitrate as a compromise. OBS says it may reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up, but it can lower video quality and does not solve the underlying network issue.
OBS’s troubleshooting recommendations are general. They do not establish a special reconnect setting, best retry value, ISP, or ingest server for India. Check the stability of your own upload connection and route; if the problem persists after local checks, ask your ISP to investigate.
