For several local videos, add them to an OBS VLC Video source playlist and leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS does not document this as a folder that automatically watches for new files: add each video to the playlist and verify the list before going live. You need VLC installed separately, with the same architecture as OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC).
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want to repeat | OBS source | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| One video | Media Source | Enable Loop. |
| Several videos in a rotation | VLC Video | Add the files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Still images | Image Slideshow | This is for images, not video files. |
The VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for extended media support. OBS lists VLC as a requirement for this source on Windows, macOS, and Linux. See the OBS Media Sources guide and Sources Guide.
Set up the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Open the scene you plan to stream. In OBS, go to Sources, select +, and add VLC Video.
- Add the videos. In the source properties, use the file-selection controls to add the videos you want in rotation. Confirm every intended file appears. The documented playlist does not promise automatic folder monitoring, so adding a file to the folder later does not establish that it will enter the playlist.
- Enable looping. Keep Loop Playlist on so OBS restarts the source after it runs out of media files. The documented default is on. Shuffle Playlist defaults off, so playback is ordered unless you change it.
- Check picture and sound. Confirm the scene preview shows the video as expected and watch the OBS audio meters while a file plays. Check the source’s audio-track setting if you do not see the expected sound.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. If this is your channel’s first live stream, YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- In the Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key. In OBS’s stream settings, select the encoder connection option and enter the URL and key provided by YouTube. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start the OBS stream and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that both video and audio are present, then test before the intended public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream; OBS’s Quick Start Guide also recommends checking the mixer and testing settings.
- While live, monitor the picture and audio. When finished, stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
For YouTube’s encoder workflow and stream-key steps, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Its live-streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
Children’s videos: check rights and channel settings separately
A video playing successfully in a loop does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it or that the stream meets YouTube’s requirements. Confirm you have the necessary rights for every video and its audio before streaming. Set the audience designation and follow applicable child-safety and monetization requirements in YouTube Studio; the technical OBS steps above do not determine those settings or your eligibility.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is unavailable or will not load: Install VLC and make sure it matches OBS’s architecture, including 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- A video in the folder never plays: Check whether it appears in the VLC Video playlist. Add it through the source properties; the documented workflow is a playlist, not an automatically watched folder.
- The playlist stops at the last video: Open the VLC Video source properties and turn on Loop Playlist.
- Videos play in an unexpected order: Check the playlist order and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Its documented default is off.
- YouTube receives no stream: Confirm OBS is using the current stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then check the Live Control Room for the encoder preview.
- The preview has no sound: Play a file, check OBS’s audio meters, and inspect the VLC source’s audio-track setting before broadcasting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
