For H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; use these as starting points, not guarantees that an Indian fiber connection will sustain them around the clock.
Start with YouTube’s live bitrate recommendations
Choose resolution and frame rate before entering a bitrate. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest recommendations, not measurements of any Indian ISP or a promise of uninterrupted streaming. YouTube publishes separate figures for H.264, AV1, and H.265, so use the row for the codec your OBS encoder actually sends. YouTube’s live encoder settings

These values apply to the video encoder bitrate. Audio also uses bandwidth, and network overhead and other household traffic need room too. If the connection cannot sustain a recommended setting with margin, choose a lower resolution or frame rate rather than pushing the bitrate close to the best speed-test result.
Check whether your fiber upload can sustain it
For live streaming, upstream capacity matters; a plan’s advertised download speed does not establish how much upload is available to OBS. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom and cautions that a shared network can constrain a stream. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. - Run an upload speed test on the same computer and connection you will use for OBS. Repeat at times when you expect other household devices to be active.
- Account for concurrent use: video calls, cloud backups, downloads, and other streams can reduce capacity available to OBS.
- Use the YouTube codec-specific recommendation as a target only if the connection has meaningful spare capacity. If uncertain, begin at a lower resolution or frame rate, or choose a lower bitrate and test.
- Do not infer a stable all-day upload rate from a single test or an ISP plan label. The actual sustained performance at a particular address and time can vary.
Set the important OBS output options
OBS control placement varies by version and selected encoder, but the bitrate control is in Settings → Output. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube’s live encoder settings · OBS connection troubleshooting
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and locate the streaming encoder’s bitrate setting. Enter the bitrate appropriate for your selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity.
- Set the rate control to CBR.
- In the encoder’s relevant settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not use an interval longer than 4 seconds.
- Check that the encoder codec matches the YouTube recommendation you used. Do not apply an H.264 bitrate figure to AV1 or H.265.
- Apply the settings, then confirm YouTube receives the intended stream in its live control room before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Run a realistic test and adjust from stream health
Test the actual scene and content, not just a static screen. Include representative motion and audio, since sustained movement can expose problems that a low-motion test misses. Use a private or unlisted test stream, inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators, and watch OBS for connection-related dropped frames.

- If connection-related dropped frames appear: reduce the bitrate in Settings → Output, then run the same test again. OBS identifies lowering bitrate as a connection troubleshooting step.
- If the stream is stable but you want a clearer picture: change one setting at a time, such as resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, and repeat the test under realistic network use.
- If buffering rises when lowering latency: consider returning to normal latency if the stream does not require audience interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. YouTube latency settings
Plan for 24/7 operation and local recording
A stable encoder setting is only one part of a 24/7 broadcast. Power, the computer, OBS, and the internet connection all need to remain available for a do-it-yourself stream, and a fiber connection alone cannot guarantee that. YouTube also warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the program matters, keep an independent local recording rather than treating YouTube’s automatic archive as a dependable backup. YouTube: Archive live streams
The available guidance does not establish a particular method for splitting or seamlessly archiving a continuous broadcast. Decide how you will retain recordings before going live, and verify that your own recording setup is capturing correctly.
