Keep the loudest voice or music passage below clipping, and listen to a representative recording before committing to a long stream. There is no single correct meter number for every yoga class: speech, instrumental music, room noise and equipment all affect what sounds clear.
Set up the audio sources before adjusting levels
Separate the microphone from music
In OBS, identify the instructor microphone and any music or desktop audio as separate sources. Mute anything that should not reach the stream. Keep the intended routing simple, then verify it in a recording so you know the stream contains the right sources and channels.
Set gain in the right order
- Adjust the source. If the microphone has a physical gain control, start there. Aim for a clean signal rather than trying to fix a noisy or distorted input with OBS filters.
- Check the operating system. Inspect the recording-device and application volume controls. Some devices have a safe operating range below 100%, and behavior varies by device; confirm what OBS actually receives rather than assuming the system control works the same for every input.
- Balance in OBS. Use the Audio Mixer fader for final adjustments. Speak at the distance and intensity you expect during class. For music, check both quiet sections and the loudest passage.
Read the OBS meter without chasing a magic number
The OBS Audio Mixer Guide describes green, yellow and red meter zones. It gives broad guidance that speech should reach the lower end of red and background material should generally sit lower, but that is not a yoga-specific loudness target. The moving bar is a peak-program meter; the black indicator approximates average loudness, and the peak-hold marker keeps the recent maximum visible for 20 seconds. After a loud phrase or musical transient, check whether the peak marker reaches red.
OBS’s technical guide provides calibration context, not a requirement that every yoga stream hit a particular value: OBS calls -20 dBFS its Alignment Level, near average speech level in a calibrated equipment chain; -9 dBFS its Permitted Maximum Level, with margin intended to reduce clipping risk from meter and alignment uncertainties; and 0 dBFS digital full scale, the maximum the output chain can handle. Keep the final signal below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. For a mostly musical class, a cautious starting practice is to keep ordinary passages comfortably out of red and preserve headroom for the loudest moment. Choose the final level by listening to a recording, not by treating a suggested peak range as a platform rule.

Monitor and review the actual stream mix
- Listen at the source if possible, then enable OBS Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties and listen through headphones or another suitable monitoring device.
- Check whether speech remains intelligible over music, and listen for hum, noise, channel imbalance, pumping, or changes between quiet and loud passages.
- Record a representative session. Review loud voice and music moments, soft phrases, transitions and pauses. Listen on a separate phone or computer at an ordinary listening volume; the sound at the OBS desk alone does not show exactly what a viewer hears.

Use filters only to address a problem you can hear
OBS includes filters such as gain, noise suppression and noise gate. A gate may reduce quiet room noise, but an aggressive setting can also cut soft speech or breathing. A compressor can reduce dynamic swings, but there is no fixed setting suitable for every voice, room and music bed. Start with a clean source signal; add processing only when listening reveals a specific problem, then record and review again.

Set YouTube audio options if YouTube Live is your destination
YouTube’s encoder guidance for stereo lists AAC or MP3 audio, 128 kbps, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. It recommends RTMPS. Match sample rates across devices where practical and verify that OBS is using the intended audio device. OBS’s overview suggests around 160 kbps for streaming audio generally, or less when upload speed is constrained; that is general OBS guidance, not a YouTube-specific requirement, so use YouTube’s 128 kbps recommendation for a YouTube-focused setup. These are encoder settings, not a target for how loud the audio should sound. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
YouTube also advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and checking stream health during the event. A short test can reveal setup problems, but it cannot establish that a specific PC, home connection, cooling setup or power arrangement will run continuously for 24 hours.

Plan a 24/7 run around the real home setup
There is no India-specific OBS audio level in the official guidance cited here. The audio workflow is the same, but test the actual Indian home PC, internet connection, cooling and power arrangement you intend to use. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during a test using the planned scene and audio. Do not infer around-the-clock reliability from a clean meter or a successful short test.
Troubleshoot common audio problems
