Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 24/7 YouTube yoga stream, use FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options only when FFmpeg is reading an HTTP source. They do not reconnect a failed outgoing RTMP/RTMPS stream. For publishing recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer with -attempt_recovery 1 and a retry wait; its example retries an RTMP output every second. These settings can recover some connection failures, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted viewing or replace a healthy source, valid credentials, and a running FFmpeg process.
Choose reconnect settings for the failure you need to fix
First locate the failing connection in the pipeline: an HTTP/HLS input that FFmpeg reads, or the RTMP/RTMPS output that FFmpeg sends to YouTube. These are separate protocol paths and use different recovery controls. The FFmpeg HTTP protocol options apply to HTTP input handling; output recovery uses the FIFO muxer. See FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation and FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation.
- HTTP input fails: configure HTTP reconnect options before the relevant
-i. - YouTube publishing connection fails: use FIFO output recovery around the FLV/RTMP output. HTTP
-reconnectflags will not repair this outgoing connection. - FFmpeg exits, the source ends, or credentials are invalid: reconnect flags alone are not a solution. Handle process supervision, source availability, or account and key issues separately.
India does not require different FFmpeg reconnect flags in the official material cited here. The same distinction between input and output recovery applies regardless of location; no India-specific ingest endpoint or ISP setting is established by these sources.
Recover a failed RTMP/RTMPS output with FIFO
For an already-produced video and audio stream, this adapts FFmpeg’s documented FIFO/RTMP example. Replace the input, stream destination, and mapping for your actual source and YouTube Live Control Room settings:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a
"rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
This is a configuration pattern, not a tested command for every source, FFmpeg build, or YouTube account. Confirm that your installed binary supports the options and that the chosen input contains the streams selected by -map. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the current RTMPS ingest destination and your private stream key. Protect the key: do not expose it in shell history, logs, screenshots, or published commands. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream to Google’s servers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
What the recovery options do
-f fifo -fifo_format flvwraps the FLV output in FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer.-attempt_recovery 1enables output recovery attempts;-recovery_wait_time 1sets a one-second wait between attempts. FFmpeg’s documented example uses this pattern for RTMP.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets encoding continue if the FIFO queue fills by dropping packets. That can omit part of the stream. Without dropping, encoding can block while the muxer catches up; choose the tradeoff deliberately.-rereads the input at its native rate, which is useful for a file intended to be played out in real time. It does not make a finite file loop forever.
Recovery is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted viewer experience. It addresses a class of output failures while FFmpeg remains active; it cannot fix an ended or permanently invalid source, a bad key, a crashed process, a stopped machine, or an account/platform issue.

Add HTTP reconnect options only for an HTTP input
If FFmpeg also reads a live HTTP or HLS source, place the protocol options before that input’s -i. For example:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1
-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-i "HTTP_INPUT_URL"
... output options ...
The 30-second maximum delay is an illustrative operator choice, not a recommendation from FFmpeg or YouTube. The HTTP documentation describes -reconnect_streamed for streamed, non-seekable inputs, -reconnect_on_network_error for TCP/TLS errors during connection, and -reconnect_delay_max as a cap on reconnect delay. Check the options available in your installed release: the linked HTTP source tracks FFmpeg master and may differ from older distribution builds.

EOF and HTTP status codes need a source-specific decision
-reconnect_at_eof treats end-of-file as an error and can suit a source expected to continue indefinitely. Do not enable it indiscriminately for a finite file that is supposed to end. HTTP status retries can be configured with -reconnect_on_http_error for selected statuses, but which responses merit retrying depends on the source. Retries cannot make a permanently unavailable URL valid.
Set YouTube encoder parameters for the stream
Use RTMP or, preferably, RTMPS for YouTube ingest. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. The page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options and supports up to 60 fps. Select settings that your encoder can sustain and that suit the image; for a mostly static yoga camera, 30 fps can be a reasonable starting point, but that is an editorial suggestion, not a measured result for a particular Indian connection.

YouTube Help’s encoder bitrate recommendations, as listed on its page accessed in 2026 (the page displays no publication year), include these H.264 values:
| H.264 mode | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These are platform encoder settings, not measurements or guarantees of upload stability in India. Choose a mode only if the encoder and sustained upstream connection can support it; bitrate needs differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before deployment because platform recommendations can change.

Test the full stream before leaving it unattended
- Check the installed build. Verify the FIFO and HTTP options against the help/documentation for the FFmpeg binary you will actually run; the current master documentation may not match an older package.
- Confirm source and mapping. Make sure the input is reachable and that
-map 0:v -map 0:amatches its video and audio streams. A missing stream will not be fixed by reconnect retries. - Confirm YouTube destination and key. Copy the current RTMPS endpoint and key from Live Control Room, keep them private, and check that the broadcast is configured as intended.
- Run a controlled test. Use a private or unlisted test with representative movement and audio. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch stream health and messages. Monitor YouTube Live Control Room during the test for health diagnostics and errors; do not infer stability simply because FFmpeg started.
- Plan process supervision separately. FIFO recovery does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or machine restart. If your deployment needs that resilience, configure an operating-system service manager and separately plan for resource exhaustion and maintenance.
Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
| Symptom or cause | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP flags are present, but YouTube output still disconnects | Whether the failure is on the outgoing RTMP/RTMPS connection rather than the HTTP input | Use FIFO output recovery for the RTMP/FLV destination; HTTP reconnect flags are input controls. |
| FFmpeg reports an unrecognized option | Installed FFmpeg release and option placement | Check that build’s protocol and muxer help. Put HTTP options before their input -i; associate FIFO and output options with the output they control. |
| Output retries but never recovers | Current ingest URL, stream key, YouTube setup/messages, and whether the source is still valid | Correct an expired URL, invalid key, account/setup problem, or permanently failed source; retries cannot repair these. |
| Stream continues but has missing packets or gaps | Whether the FIFO queue overflowed with packet dropping enabled | With -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, packets can be dropped. Reassess the queue policy and whether a gap or delayed output is preferable. |
| Stream stops after the input finishes | Whether the source is finite and whether EOF is being treated as expected completion | Choose an appropriate source/looping strategy. -reconnect_at_eof may suit an endless source, but should not be blindly applied to a finite file. |
| FFmpeg disappears or the host restarts | Process exit, host availability, resource use, and service configuration | Use separate process supervision and host-restart handling; FIFO retries only work while FFmpeg remains active. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining FFmpeg and a machine or server is the burden, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live; it does not stream from a camera. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off while the cloud loops the video. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers; it includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Recovery does not remove the need for a valid source, key, and YouTube setup.
