For a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, a practical H.264 starting point is 1080p30 at a constant bitrate within YouTube’s recommended 5–14 Mbps range, with a 2-second keyframe interval and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. If your source or sustained upload capacity cannot support that reliably, try 720p30 at 3–8 Mbps instead. These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a requirement to use the top of each range. Choose settings your connection can sustain, test them with representative content, and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the broadcast.

Choose resolution and bitrate together

Resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate work as a set. The following H.264 ranges are YouTube Help’s recommended ingest settings, accessed in 2026; they are recommendation ranges, not measurements of your particular files or connection.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p60 6–17 Mbps
1080p30 5–14 Mbps
720p60 3–8 Mbps
720p30 3–8 Mbps
480p30 0.4–4 Mbps
360p30 0.4–4 Mbps

For documentaries with mostly static imagery, the upper end may not be necessary, but that is a practical inference rather than a YouTube rule. Test the actual playlist, including its most detailed and fast-moving footage, and judge the result against the upload you can sustain. The total stream bitrate—including audio—must fit the available upstream capacity. A speed-test peak alone does not establish that your connection can maintain the stream continuously; YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth and preparation.

A sensible starting choice

  • Use 1080p30 H.264 if the material is 1080p and your sustained upload can comfortably carry the selected bitrate.
  • Use 720p30 if the source is lower resolution or the connection needs a lower output rate.
  • Choose 60 fps only when the source and intended presentation benefit from it and the connection can sustain its recommended range.

Do not upscale low-resolution material just to select a larger output number. If your files vary in resolution, frame rate or encoding, decide whether to normalize them before broadcasting; that affects the playlist pipeline, not just the bitrate field.

Set the encoder output

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, H.264 is a common choice; use the H.264 ranges above rather than assuming another codec uses the same bitrate target. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.

  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not set the interval above 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC stereo at 128 kbps; YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo.
  • Picture format: progressive scan, square pixels and Rec. 709 for SDR.

In FFmpeg, these choices correspond to encoder settings such as the selected video encoder, output frame size and frame rate, bitrate/rate-control options, GOP or keyframe interval, audio codec, audio bitrate and sample rate. Exact option names and valid combinations depend on the encoder and build you use. Confirm them against the FFmpeg documentation for your installed version rather than pasting a command designed for different hardware or inputs.

Prepare a playlist for sequential playback

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text list of media files and processes them in sequence. It is not a universal solution for arbitrary mixtures of files: the inputs need matching streams, codecs and time base for clean concatenation. FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to calculate timestamps for the next one, so inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Check the media before committing to a 24/7 run

  • Inspect every file for stream layout, codecs, resolution, frame rate and timing. A file with an extra audio or subtitle stream may not match the others.
  • Decide whether compatible inputs can be stream-copied or need decoding and re-encoding. Re-encoding may be required to scale, convert frame rate or give every segment a consistent output format.
  • Check duration metadata and test transitions between files. Incorrect durations can shift timestamps and produce visible or audible discontinuities.
  • Run a representative test with the actual playlist. The concat documentation establishes sequential demuxing and compatibility caveats, but does not establish one universal production command for infinite looping, reconnecting and unattended recovery.

Keep playlist looping, output encoding and process supervision conceptually separate. A playlist can be valid while the encoder, host or network still fails; continuous operation requires attention to all of them.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream’s encoder settings into your FFmpeg destination configuration. The key authorizes YouTube to accept the feed, so handle it like a password and do not publish it in scripts, logs or screenshots.
  3. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream; do not assume a process that starts locally is reaching YouTube cleanly.
  4. Once the preview and health indicators are satisfactory, make the stream public or start the event according to the Live Control Room controls for that stream.

For current ingest parameters, use YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance. Interface labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room workflow rather than relying on a fixed screenshot or an old menu path.

Plan for a 24/7 broadcast and its archive

YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A single continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a dependable archive. If preserving the program matters, arrange a separate local or otherwise independent recording. Alternatively, plan shorter sessions, while accounting for the interruption and restart involved. Details are in YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

No cited guidance guarantees uptime for a particular FFmpeg command, computer, server or network. In practice, continuity depends on compatible inputs, sufficient sustained upload, a running encoder and monitoring. A home computer must remain on and connected for a local setup; a remote host changes where the process runs but does not remove the need to test and supervise it.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely issue What to check
YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health The total bitrate exceeds what the connection sustains, or upload varies. Reduce the target bitrate or output resolution, then test again over a representative period. Compare against sustained upstream capacity, not only a peak speed-test result.
Video appears blocky or loses detail The selected bitrate may be too low for the output resolution and motion in the footage. Test a higher value within YouTube’s range if bandwidth permits, or lower the resolution. Inspect action-heavy scenes as well as static shots.
Visible gaps, jumps or artifacts at file changes Concat inputs may differ in streams, codecs or time base; duration metadata may be inaccurate. Check input compatibility and durations, then normalize or re-encode files where necessary. Test transitions before leaving the playlist unattended.
FFmpeg runs but YouTube receives no usable feed The destination URL or stream key may be wrong, or the encoder output may not match the chosen settings. Recheck the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the output codec and parameters, and inspect YouTube’s preview and health status.
A long stream is missing from the channel archive The continuous event may have exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. Use an independent recording plan or schedule shorter sessions if an archive is required.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home computer or connection to stay on, StreamNeo runs an uploaded-video YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps looping when your computer is off; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
