For a typical stereo podcast sent to YouTube Live, use AAC at 128 Kbps: -c:a aac -b:a 128k. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio, and FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder uses its bitrate option to activate constant-bitrate (CBR) mode. This setting controls audio encoding; it does not by itself keep a broadcast running continuously.
Set the bitrate for a stereo podcast
Add these options to the output options for the YouTube stream:
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-c:a aac selects FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder. -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate to 128 kilobits per second. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 44.1 kHz for stereo sample rate in its live encoder settings guidance. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of sound quality.
Put the options with the intended output
FFmpeg applies output options to the output that follows them. If your command writes more than one output, place the audio options with the YouTube output, not with a separate recording or file output. The :a stream specifier means the option applies to audio streams.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make sure an audio stream is present and selected
The bitrate fragment cannot create audio from silence. If the input has audio, map the intended audio stream to the YouTube output. If it does not, supply audio through the source or a filter graph. Because -b:a matches all audio streams, a source with multiple tracks may require more deliberate mapping or a more specific stream specifier so that you encode the intended track.
Choose settings for the channel layout
| Audio layout | YouTube-recommended bitrate | Sample rate | Codec and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz | AAC is suitable; YouTube also lists MP3 as an accepted audio codec. |
| 5.1 surround | 384 Kbps | 48 kHz | For RTMP, YouTube supports 5.1 only with AAC. |
The figures are YouTube recommendations in its live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. Use the stereo recommendation for an ordinary podcast mix; the higher 5.1 figure is for surround audio, not a general-purpose improvement for stereo speech.

Understand CBR and what the bitrate option does
FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder documentation says its bitrate option sets a rate in bits per second and automatically activates CBR mode. In the command above, FFmpeg interprets 128k as 128,000 bits per second. This documented behavior applies to FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder; do not assume a third-party AAC encoder uses identical rate-control behavior without checking its own documentation.
YouTube recommends CBR for live encoding. Bitrate, codec, sample rate, and channel layout work together: choosing the right bitrate does not fix a missing or incorrectly mapped audio track, an unsupported configuration, or an unreliable connection.

Check the output before relying on a long broadcast
- Confirm the input and mapping. Check that the source contains the podcast audio you want and that the YouTube output maps that track. When there are several audio streams, verify which one is being encoded.
- Review FFmpeg’s startup and output log. Confirm that the selected encoder is AAC and that the output reports the intended bitrate, sample rate, and channel layout.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. For a podcast, include representative speech and any music used in the programme.
- Monitor YouTube stream health. Check the live control room’s stream-health feedback and messages during the test and broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to its servers.
A bitrate setting alone cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream. YouTube’s LiveStream health-status guidance describes issues involving bitrate, codecs, sample rates, and mismatches between primary and backup streams.
Troubleshoot common audio problems
- No audio reaches YouTube: Verify that the input or filter graph supplies audio and that the intended audio stream is mapped to the YouTube output. The bitrate option cannot generate a signal on its own.
- The wrong language or track is heard: The command may be matching multiple tracks or mapping an unintended one. Inspect the input streams and explicitly select the intended audio stream.
- The output does not show the expected rate or layout: Check FFmpeg’s output log for the actual encoder settings and confirm the source and output channel mapping. Compare the resulting layout and sample rate with the applicable YouTube recommendation.
- YouTube reports a stream-health warning: Read the specific message and check the reported bitrate, codec, sample rate, or primary/backup mismatch. A correct audio bitrate cannot remedy every configuration or connection problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded podcast recordings, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud rather than relying on a computer at home to remain on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
