For a stable YouTube Live encoder, choose your output resolution and frame rate first, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your ingest codec, set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), and use a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Then check your actual upload capacity, allow headroom, and rehearse the automation before relying on it unattended.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec before bitrate
Bitrate is not a universal setting: YouTube’s recommended value depends on the incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s recommendations for encoder ingest, not a promise of a particular picture quality. Motion, scene detail, and encoder quality also affect the result. YouTube may transcode the incoming stream into delivery formats for viewers.
The values in this table are the recommendations shown on YouTube’s encoder-settings page when checked on October 3, 2026. The page does not display a publication or update date. AV1 and H.265/HEVC share the listed recommendation column.
| Output resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, an H.264 encoder sending 1080p30 should start at 10 Mbps recommended by YouTube; H.264 at 1080p60 should use 17 Mbps. Do not copy the AV1/H.265 value into an H.264 setup. YouTube also publishes minimums, but those are lower bounds rather than normal targets when your connection can sustain the recommended rate. For example, its listed H.264 minimums are 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60, versus recommendations of 14 and 17 Mbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the complete current table, including minimums at other modes.

Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval
Set the encoder’s rate control to CBR and keyframe frequency to 2 seconds. These are separate controls: hitting the bitrate target does not compensate for an interval that is too long. YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked October 3, 2026, recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
The interval is measured in time. If the encoder asks for a frame count, calculate seconds Ă— frame rate: enter 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps for a 2-second interval. Use the matching frame rate you selected for the output; do not enter 60 frames merely because it is a familiar value if the stream is running at 60 fps.

YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps, and supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Choose a codec your encoder and workflow support, and use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension to RTMP. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S), says AV1 is not supported for HDR on the cited page, and specifies 10-bit depth for HDR versus 8-bit for SDR. At 2160p, YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable and the stream uses normal latency. Consult the encoder-settings page if these HDR or latency details apply to your production.
Check upload capacity with headroom
Compare the encoder’s outbound stream rate with measured upload capacity—not download speed. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom and warns that other devices or applications sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the stream. Its Help guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Run a speed test under conditions representative of the scheduled stream, and account for concurrent uploads, video calls, or other streams.

- If the measured upload capacity cannot sustain the recommended rate plus headroom, choose a lower resolution or frame rate and use that mode’s bitrate recommendation.
- If you send a primary and backup stream, budget for both rates rather than treating the connection’s full capacity as available to each.
- A wired connection may reduce local wireless variability if your encoder and network equipment support it, but a cable cannot increase the upstream capacity supplied by your internet service.
YouTube’s streaming tips cover network checks and stream health. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee that capacity will remain constant during a long unattended broadcast.
Connect the encoder and configure YouTube controls
- Set the encoder output. Select the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, recommended bitrate, CBR, and 2-second keyframe interval. In Live Control Room, YouTube says the encoder only needs resolution, frame rate, and bitrate specified; YouTube detects the other encoder settings. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings enabled. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube into the corresponding encoder fields. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the connection flow.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send video to your stream. Use custom or reusable keys and settings for recurring events where appropriate; reset a key if it is exposed.
- Choose how the event starts and stops. YouTube’s stream settings include Auto-start and Auto-stop controls that allow starting or stopping from the encoder. Enable them when they fit the workflow, but verify that the encoder itself supports the intended schedule, reconnection, and unattended operation. These YouTube controls do not guarantee that a computer will wake, an encoder process will restart, or every third-party tool will recover from failure. See YouTube’s stream management guidance.
- Rehearse the full path. Send a test with representative motion and audio. Confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room, watch the stream-health messages, and test the planned stop and restart behavior before scheduling a broadcast that cannot be supervised.
Verify what viewers will see and what the stream may contain
The bitrate and keyframe settings govern the feed arriving at YouTube; they do not determine every viewer’s playback format because YouTube transcodes streams for delivery. Review the Live Control Room preview and health indicators during the rehearsal rather than assuming the encoder’s local preview proves the YouTube ingest is healthy.

For documentaries and other archival or licensed footage, confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every video, soundtrack, and other included material. A technically valid stream does not establish permission to use copyrighted content or eligibility under YouTube’s monetization rules. YouTube can restrict or interrupt a stream when content or account requirements are not met. Review the applicable YouTube policies and rights for the material before scheduling a long-running broadcast.

- Stream does not appear in Live Control Room: check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL and key copied from the correct event, and that the encoder has started output. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder configuration.
- Unstable ingest or stream-health warnings: compare the encoder’s output rate with measured upload capacity, include YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check whether other traffic is competing for upload. If capacity is insufficient, reduce the output mode and select its corresponding bitrate rather than keeping a higher target.
- Settings seem correct but the connection still fails: confirm the configured codec and ingest protocol are supported by the encoder workflow, and use RTMPS if available. Check that the selected stream key and manual settings correspond to the output mode.
- Encoder is sending but the scheduled event does not start or stop as expected: check YouTube’s Auto-start/Auto-stop settings and the encoder’s own scheduling and process controls. Test recovery and restart behavior directly; YouTube’s controls alone do not provide unattended operation for every encoder.
- Motion looks poor despite matching the table: verify the correct codec column, resolution, frame rate, and actual outgoing bitrate. The published figures are recommendations, not guaranteed visual outcomes; scene complexity and encoder quality affect the picture.
- Low latency is unavailable at 4K: this is expected under YouTube’s cited encoder guidance; 2160p streams use normal latency.
