How to Set Audio Normalization for a 24/7 Mantra Stream on YouTube

YouTube has no published LUFS target for live streams. Match mantra recordings by ear and measurement, control peaks separately, and test the encoded output.

Prepare the mantra recordings so their loudness is consistent from one file and playlist transition to the next, then check peaks and listen to the encoded output. YouTube’s published live encoder recommendations do not specify a creator-side LUFS target. The AES’s -16 LUFS music reference can be a starting point, but it is not a YouTube Live requirement.

What audio normalization means for a continuous mantra stream

For a 24/7 stream, normalization is mainly a preparation task: measure the recordings, adjust their relative levels where needed, and preserve intentional differences in intensity. Integrated loudness describes the perceived loudness across a program; peak level tells you how close the signal comes to digital clipping. They answer different questions, so check both.

There is no official YouTube Live LUFS target in YouTube’s live encoder recommendations. That guidance covers ingest settings and pre-stream testing, not a loudness number. Do not treat -14 LUFS—or any other figure—as a mandatory YouTube Live target.

Choose a measured reference, not a platform rule

The Audio Engineering Society’s TD1008 v3.13 (2021) recommends music averaging -16 LUFS when music and speech are normalized separately; it also gives -16 LUFS as an integrated-loudness example for pop music distribution. Those are general online-audio references, not requirements for YouTube Live or mantra streams. Mantra recordings can have different dynamics and listening contexts, so use the number only if it suits the material after listening and checking peaks.

AES TD1008 also gives -18 LUFS for speech streams. That figure is not a target for a music or mantra stream. The useful principle is to pick a documented reference for your channel, apply it consistently where appropriate, and judge the result by both measurement and listening.

Prepare and match the recordings

  1. Assemble the actual program. Build the playlist or loop you intend to broadcast, including transitions and any quiet sections. Work from the final recordings rather than relying on a single short excerpt.
  2. Measure integrated loudness. Use an audio meter that reports integrated loudness using a recognized loudness method. Measure each complete recording or full intended section. An OBS peak bar or its VU-style black indicator does not provide an integrated LUFS reading.
  3. Adjust relative gain. If one file sounds conspicuously louder or quieter than its neighbors, change its clip or file gain and measure again. Aim for smooth perceived transitions, not identical meter readings at every moment.
  4. Preserve intentional dynamics. Keep meaningful changes in vocal intensity, breathing, room tone, and other quiet-to-loud movement. Matching files is not a reason to flatten a performance.
  5. Check peaks separately. Keep the final output below 0 dBFS. OBS notes that material reaching or exceeding the digital ceiling can clip. Re-check after gain changes and across the loudest passages.

Use real-time correction carefully

File-based gain matching lets you compare the material before it goes live and adjust specific recordings without continuously changing the sound. Real-time loudness correction can respond to level differences while streaming, but aggressive correction may suppress the intended movement of a mantra. AES explains that a live process cannot predict what is coming later in the program.

If you use active correction, audition it across both quiet and loud passages. AES’s loudness-normalization explainer describes rolling measurement windows commonly between 30 seconds and two minutes as a compromise for active control; this is not a universal setting that every stream must use. A limiter can catch unexpected peaks, but do not drive it so hard that the sound audibly pumps or compresses.

Set YouTube audio transport independently

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, stereo at a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps for stereo audio. These are transmission settings, not loudness targets. Configure them separately from your file gain and loudness workflow, and consult YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the rest of the stream setup.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Test the complete signal chain

  1. Choose a representative passage. Include the quietest and loudest expected material, as well as a playlist transition. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
  2. Listen at the source and after encoding. Check the audio before it enters OBS or another encoder, then listen to the encoder output. Headphones or monitor speakers can help you hear problems, but they do not measure integrated LUFS or normalize sound.
  3. Record and review a test. Record a representative session and play it back. Listen for clipping, sudden level changes, silence from a playback fault, audible pumping, distracting reverb, tonal imbalance, or encoding artifacts.
  4. Monitor the live stream. Watch stream health and listen during operation. Meter activity alone cannot tell you whether the result is comfortable to hear or whether a transition sounds natural.

OBS’s audio monitoring guidance recommends listening at the source and in OBS, then recording and checking a session before going live. Its documented main meter is a peak program meter, and the black indicator is VU-style; neither should be mistaken for an integrated LUFS analyzer.

Do not rely on YouTube playback features to fix the mix

YouTube Help describes Stable volume as a viewer playback feature that balances quiet and loud parts. It is on by default for videos, is unavailable on some videos, and viewers can turn it off. It is therefore not a dependable creator-side control for a continuous stream; prepare a coherent mix that works without assuming every viewer receives the same playback processing. See YouTube’s Stable volume explanation.

YouTube also describes audio enhancements, including automatic volume adjustments and sound balancing, and says an enhancement setting can be managed for a channel’s future uploads. That documentation does not establish a fixed LUFS target for live ingestion or show that these controls normalize a 24/7 live input to a specified loudness. See YouTube’s audio enhancement information.

Troubleshoot common loudness problems

  • One mantra sounds louder after a transition: measure the full recordings, adjust their relative gain, and replay the playlist boundary. Do not try to solve a single mismatched file by aggressively compressing the whole stream.
  • The meter looks safe, but the audio clips: check the encoded recording and listen back. A meter reading is not a substitute for checking the final signal chain; reduce gain so peaks remain below 0 dBFS.
  • Quiet passages become unnaturally loud: reduce or bypass aggressive real-time correction and re-audition the quiet and loud sections. Active processing may alter intended dynamics.
  • The stream is silent or jumps unexpectedly: check playback at the source and at the encoder output, then inspect the playlist transition and playback continuity. Continue monitoring stream health.
  • The sound seems different for different viewers: do not assume Stable volume is available or enabled for everyone. Evaluate the prepared stream itself rather than treating viewer-side playback processing as your mix control.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you have prepared the audio but do not want a computer or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
