To make Apple Music open music files when you double-click them in Windows, assign it to each file extension you use. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for an extension such as .mp3, select its current app, and choose Apple Music. Repeat for formats such as .m4a or .flac; Windows has no single switch that changes every audio format.
What changing the default actually does
Windows assigns apps to file types and link types. Setting Apple Music for .mp3 tells Windows to open local MP3 files with that app when you double-click them. It does not automatically change the app for .wav, .flac, other extensions, or web links. Microsoft explains the available default-app controls in its Windows default apps instructions.

This setting does not redirect playback inside a browser, make YouTube or Spotify links open in Apple Music, or control every Play command or media button used by another app. Link protocols have their own associations, and you should only assign one to Apple Music if Windows offers it as a handler.
Before you start: install the right Apple app
Install Apple Music for Windows from the Microsoft Store if it is not already on your PC. Apple’s Windows lineup also includes Apple TV for video and Apple Devices for managing Apple hardware. iTunes remains relevant for some users who need podcasts or audiobooks, or whose PC does not meet the requirements for Apple’s dedicated apps. You do not need an Apple Music subscription just to set a Windows file association.

Set Apple Music as the default in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Default apps.
- In the search box, type a file extension, such as
.mp3. - Select the current app shown for that extension.
- Choose Apple Music. Confirm the change if Windows asks.
- Repeat for each other extension you want Apple Music to open.
- In File Explorer, double-click a local file in one of those formats to test the association.
You can also open Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for Apple Music, and review the file types Windows lists for it. Select an extension there to change its assigned app. The exact options depend on what Apple Music has registered on your installation.
Choose the extensions you actually use
Assign only the formats you want Apple Music to open, and only when the extension appears in Windows and Apple Music is offered as an app for it.

| Extension | Common use | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
.mp3 |
Compressed music | A common choice for a local music library. |
.m4a |
MPEG-4 audio, often AAC or ALAC | Set this separately from .mp3. |
.aac |
AAC audio | Set it separately if you use files with this extension. |
.flac |
Lossless audio | Do not assume Apple Music supports it on your installation if it is not offered or the file will not play. |
.wav |
Commonly uncompressed PCM audio | Set it separately from other formats. |
.aif or .aiff |
AIFF audio | Windows may list these as separate extensions. |
.m4b |
Often used for audiobooks | Apple Music may not be the most suitable app for these files. |
.wma |
Windows Media Audio | Check whether Apple Music accepts the files before changing the association. |
Microsoft’s list of common file extensions describes Windows file types; it is not a guarantee that Apple Music can play every listed format. Apple documents lossless playback settings for Windows, including up to 24-bit/48 kHz Lossless and up to 24-bit/192 kHz Hi-Res Lossless, but those quality settings do not establish support for every local-file extension. See Apple’s lossless audio guidance.
Use Open with for a single format
- In File Explorer, right-click a local audio file.
- Select Open with > Choose another app.
- Select Apple Music.
- Enable Always use this app to open [file type] files, then select OK.
This sets the association for that file’s extension, not for every music format. If the option is not shown, use Default apps or troubleshoot the missing app below.

Opening a file is different from importing it into your library
Double-clicking a file opens it in Apple Music. To add local music to the app’s library, use Sidebar Actions > Import, or drag files and folders from File Explorer into Apple Music. Apple says the default import behavior can leave the original file where it is and store a reference to it. If you later move or delete that original, the library entry may no longer play. See Apple’s instructions for adding music from your computer.
Apple Music catalog downloads are different from ordinary files in your folders: they are managed within the app. Apple explains how to add and download music from the Apple Music catalog; do not treat subscription downloads as unrestricted MP3s or use a file association to open them.

Apple Music access and subscriptions
Setting a default app is a Windows choice, separate from Apple Music catalog access. Streaming the catalog, using Sync Library, and accessing subscription downloads involve signing in and meeting Apple’s subscription requirements. Apple says Sync Library is available when signed in as an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscriber; details are in its Apple Music settings guide. Apple Music availability and features can vary by country or region.
If Apple Music does not appear or the file will not open
- Check installation: Launch Apple Music from the Start menu. If it is missing, install it using Apple’s Windows app guidance.
- Update the app: Check for Apple Music updates in the Microsoft Store, then revisit Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Check the exact extension: Search for the extension again. If Apple Music is absent for that type, Windows may not have it registered as a handler. Do not force the association with registry edits or unofficial utilities.
- Try a real local file: A playlist, shortcut, streaming URL, protected item, or app database entry may not behave like an ordinary audio file.
- Check for an iTunes association: If iTunes and Apple Music are both installed, review the default separately for each extension rather than assuming one app replaced the other.
- Test another format: If an MP3 opens but a FLAC file does not, the problem may be format-specific rather than a general default-app issue.
- Reinstall if needed: If Apple Music is missing from every relevant app list, uninstall and reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.
- For catalog downloads: Open the item from your Apple Music library rather than treating it as a standard local file.
Windows 10 instructions
On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Choose default apps by file type. Find an extension, select its current app, and choose Apple Music if it is listed. Repeat for each format you want to change; wording can vary somewhat by build.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Existing PCs may still have these settings, but for a security-updated Windows system, use a supported version of Windows. See Microsoft’s Windows file extensions page.
When another player may be a better fit
If your priority is broad local-file playback rather than Apple’s catalog or Sync Library, VLC is a general-purpose local media player. For local collection organization, tagging, and playlists, consider MusicBee. Neither replaces Apple Music subscription catalog features. If your goal is streaming through Spotify, use the Spotify app for Windows; changing Apple Music’s file associations does not redirect Spotify links.
