You do not set a separate advertiser-suitability rating for each prerecorded segment as it plays: assess the full stream and its packaging against YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Ad placement controls affect when ads may run; they do not make content suitable for advertisers.
What you can—and cannot—set for a continuous stream
YouTube’s documented live-stream controls let eligible creators enable monetization and choose a mid-roll mode. Its advertiser-friendly rules apply to live streams as well as other video, and review considers the content and its metadata together. The official guidance does not describe a separate switch for rating each prerecorded segment inside one continuous 24/7 stream.
For a stream assembled from documentaries, clips, or other recordings, assess the entire feed, including each item that may appear as the stream loops, along with its title, thumbnail, description, and tags. Calling the broadcast “live” does not change the underlying content-policy assessment.
Before turning on ads
- Confirm channel eligibility. Live-stream ad revenue depends on channel monetization and the applicable YouTube Partner Program terms.
- Confirm rights. YouTube says creators must have the necessary rights to the visual and audio elements when turning on ads. Check every recording and any music, footage, or other material it contains.
- Review the full package. Apply the advertiser-friendly content guidelines to the stream’s complete programming and metadata. Where relevant, give accurate educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic context; context can affect suitability, but does not guarantee ads.
Turn on monetization and choose mid-roll behavior
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled or active live stream and open its settings in Live Control Room.
- Select Edit, open Monetization, and turn monetization on.
- Choose the mid-roll option that fits the viewing experience. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads turn on automatically with live monetization.
Compare the mid-roll options

YouTube reports that automatic live mid-rolls were associated with over 20% average uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not enable them. That is YouTube’s average across 207 countries in January 2024, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel. Whichever mode you choose, an ad opportunity is not a promise that an ad will serve.

Assess advertiser suitability for the whole feed
Use YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines to review all material in the stream, not just the first recording or the currently playing segment. Consider the focus, tone, realism, and graphicness of content, and provide accurate metadata that describes the programming. YouTube says reviewers evaluate the video and related content as a whole, including the title, thumbnail, description, and tags.
For documentary programming, relevant educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic context may matter to a suitability assessment. It should be clear and accurate in the content and its presentation; metadata is not a substitute for rights or policy compliance.

YouTube’s Self-Certification process is a separate creator workflow described for video monetization review. The official guidance reviewed does not establish that creators can self-rate each prerecorded segment as it passes through one continuous live stream. Do not treat stream-level monetization or mid-roll settings as segment-by-segment suitability controls.
Check ad delivery and respond to a review decision
- Ads may not fill every opportunity. YouTube’s systems decide whether an ad serves. If a viewer is not shown an ad, they continue watching the stream.
- Review a limited-ads or yellow-icon decision. If you believe the content is suitable, use the available appeal or human-review process for that decision. Eligibility and available steps depend on the applicable YouTube review workflow.
- Keep the whole package in view. Human reviewers consider the content and metadata together, so make sure the stream’s title, thumbnail, description, and tags accurately reflect what viewers will see.
- Account for embeds. YouTube says live ads are turned off for a stream embedded on an external site with autoplay.
