To set or change a thumbnail before a YouTube live stream, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the scheduled stream, edit its details, add the thumbnail, and save. The exact thumbnail control can vary by streaming method and Studio interface, so check the saved stream details before the event.
Set a thumbnail for a scheduled encoder stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room.
- Open Manage. Choose Schedule stream to create an upcoming stream, or select the scheduled stream you want to change. YouTube documents these setup and management routes in its encoder stream setup guidance.
- Enter or review the stream details. Add or replace the custom thumbnail in the details, then save. You can also edit stream settings during creation or later using Edit; the thumbnail field’s presentation may depend on the streaming method or Studio interface. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Return to the scheduled stream’s details and confirm the change was saved. For an encoder stream, start the encoder early enough to check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before clicking Go live. The preview checks the incoming stream; YouTube does not explicitly say that it verifies the listing thumbnail. Its live streaming tips recommend checking the preview before starting.
Thumbnail updates may take time to appear, and YouTube does not specify a fixed wait. Save the image well before the event, then check the scheduled stream details or watch page again nearer the start time. The steps above reflect YouTube Help guidance current as of October 3, 2026; Studio labels and controls can change.
How the webcam thumbnail workflow differs
For a webcam stream, YouTube says to enter the title, description, and privacy setting, then click Next; the camera takes a thumbnail at that point. You can find a scheduled webcam stream later under Manage and edit its settings. If you want a designed image rather than the camera snapshot, look in the stream’s editable details. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that every streaming method presents the same custom-thumbnail control. See its webcam streaming instructions.
Prepare an image that fits YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s general custom-thumbnail guidance recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for video thumbnails and lists 3840 × 2160 pixels as a recommended resolution, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. It gives JPG and PNG as example formats and states a 50 MB desktop upload limit for video thumbnails. These are general video-thumbnail recommendations, not a separately documented universal specification for every Live Control Room workflow. Google’s live production guide also describes a custom live-event thumbnail as a 16:9 image.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use a clear 16:9 composition that remains legible at small sizes; put the documentary’s subject or central question where it will not be obscured by cropping.
- For a text-heavy design, keep wording brief and check it at a reduced size before uploading.
- Use an image you have the right to publish. A thumbnail is part of the public presentation of the stream, so avoid copyrighted artwork or misleading imagery.
YouTube says custom video thumbnails are available to verified accounts. Its live-stream setup guidance also requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. These are relevant account prerequisites, but they do not guarantee that an identical thumbnail control will appear in every workflow or interface variation. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Troubleshoot thumbnail problems before the event
- The thumbnail option is missing: Confirm that you are editing the intended scheduled stream’s details in Live Control Room. The interface can differ between encoder and webcam flows. Check account verification and live-stream eligibility; if the control is still absent, consult YouTube’s current setup help for your method.
- The webcam selected an unwanted image: YouTube says the camera takes a thumbnail after you advance past the initial details. Open the scheduled stream under Manage, edit its details, and look for a custom-image control. Its exact location may vary.
- The old image still appears: Save the details and allow time for the change to appear. YouTube gives no guaranteed propagation interval; check the stream details or watch page again rather than assuming the update failed immediately.
- The upload is rejected: Check the file format, dimensions, and size against YouTube’s general thumbnail guidance, while bearing in mind that a particular Live Control Room surface may apply its own constraints.
- The preview looks correct but the listing does not: The incoming encoder preview is a readiness check for the stream, not a documented confirmation of the separate listing thumbnail. Reopen the saved stream details and check the watch page.
