Set the thumbnail in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before the broadcast starts: open the scheduled stream’s details, upload your image in the thumbnail area, and save. A custom thumbnail requires a verified account; live streaming has separate eligibility rules. The thumbnail identifies the stream, but it does not keep the broadcast running continuously.
Before you upload: check channel eligibility
- YouTube requires a verified account to use custom thumbnails. See YouTube’s custom-thumbnail requirements.
- Live streaming also requires a verified channel, and YouTube says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
How to change a scheduled live stream thumbnail
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- For a stream that has not started, open Manage and select the scheduled stream. If you have not scheduled it yet, create or schedule it first. YouTube says stream details can be set during setup or edited in stream settings; labels and available controls can vary as Studio changes. See Manage live stream settings.
- Open the stream’s editing or details view. In the thumbnail area, choose the upload option, select your prepared image, and save. YouTube’s general computer workflow is Content → select the video → Thumbnail → Upload file → Save, but a live stream’s controls are in Live Control Room or its stream settings rather than necessarily in the regular Content list. The general steps are documented in YouTube’s thumbnail help.
- Reopen the stream details or its watch page to check the saved image. A change may take time to appear, so do not assume it failed just because the old image is briefly still visible.
- Before going live, preview the stream in Live Control Room and confirm the thumbnail and stream details are correct. For an encoder broadcast, connect the encoder using the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube recommends setting up ahead and checking the preview; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
What size should a YouTube live stream thumbnail be?
YouTube’s current video-thumbnail guidance recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, in JPG or PNG format. The stated upload limits are 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails; the applicable limit depends on the device used to upload. Because platform requirements can change, check YouTube’s current thumbnail guidance before preparing an image near a limit.
Make the image fit the music without misleading viewers
For an Indian music stream—whether it features bhajans, kirtan, Gurbani, Hindi music, or another style—use imagery that accurately represents the broadcast. Show performers or instruments only when you have the necessary rights. Keep any wording readable at small preview size; that is a design recommendation, not a YouTube specification. The image must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube lists nudity or sexual content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content among reasons a thumbnail may be rejected. Repeated violations can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or lead to account termination, according to its thumbnail policy guidance.
Scheduled stream versus a stream already in progress

A thumbnail does not make a broadcast 24/7
A custom image changes how the stream is presented; it does not provide continuous encoding, internet access, or recovery if the stream disconnects. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a single 24-hour broadcast will be archived as one video. For a continuous schedule, separately plan for stream continuity, power and network backup, monitoring, and music rights. Pre-launch checks
- Set and verify the thumbnail before starting, rather than relying on a change during an active stream.
- Confirm that the encoder is using the intended stream URL and key for the scheduled broadcast.
- Preview in Live Control Room, check that the stream is accessible, and monitor audio and video quality. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend arranging an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Those event timings may not map neatly to an always-on channel, but previewing and checking the stream remain useful.
- Confirm you have the rights to broadcast every recording in the playlist or stream. A suitable thumbnail does not grant music rights or guarantee that the stream complies with YouTube policies.
