How to Send a Playlist from a Media Server to YouTube Live

Send a media-server playlist to YouTube Live by configuring the event, connecting its stream URL and key to an RTMPS or HLS encoder, and verifying YouTube’s incoming preview.

To send a playlist from a media server to YouTube Live, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, copy that stream’s server URL and stream key into the server’s YouTube/RTMP output (or the encoder receiving its playlist), then start the output and check YouTube’s preview and stream health. The playlist is the source selected by your media server; RTMPS or HLS is the delivery method used to send its video to YouTube.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel able to go live and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • A media server that can play or loop the video playlist, plus an output or encoder that can send the resulting continuous feed to YouTube.
  • The server or encoder’s instructions for loading and looping a playlist. The exact controls and menu names depend on the media-server product and version; YouTube’s setup instructions do not define them.
  • The YouTube server URL and stream key for the particular stream you are setting up.

Do not confuse the source playlist—such as an M3U list or a library playlist—with an HLS ingest playlist. The first selects what your server plays. The second is part of HLS delivery to YouTube and has its own segment and format requirements.

Set up the YouTube Live stream

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream, or schedule one from the Manage tab. Scheduling can create a watch page for viewers and reminders.
  2. Check its visibility. Confirm the privacy setting for the stream you created. Do not assume every channel or stream defaults to public; defaults can vary by age.
  3. Copy the credentials for this stream. In the stream’s Live Control Room settings, copy the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it identifies the stream, so do not publish it in screenshots, logs, or example configurations.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this server URL and stream key as the connection details an encoder needs to send a broadcast. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Connect the media-server playlist to YouTube

  1. Load and configure the source playlist in your media server. Add the videos in the order you want them to play and set the server to continue or loop playback if that is the intended broadcast. Follow the documentation for your server’s exact product and version; there is no universal YouTube playlist menu or command.
  2. Choose the server’s outgoing encoder or destination. If the media server has a YouTube or RTMP output, configure that output. Otherwise, send the server’s playback feed to an encoder that can transmit it.
  3. Enter the YouTube destination details. Paste the server URL and stream key from the specific Live Control Room stream into the corresponding encoder fields. Do not expose the key in a public stream description or screenshot.
  4. Select a supported ingest protocol. For an ordinary encoder workflow, RTMPS is a practical first option when your encoder supports it. Use HLS only if your encoder and media workflow support YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements and its higher latency is acceptable.
  5. Start the server or encoder output. Make sure the playlist is actually playing and the encoder is sending its feed to YouTube.
  6. Wait for YouTube’s incoming preview and inspect stream health. For a scheduled-stream workflow that requires it, click Go live only after the incoming preview is visible and the stream health check is acceptable.

Choose between RTMPS and HLS

Consideration RTMPS HLS
Transport RTMP secured with SSL/TLS. Google documents port 443 and requires the correct server hostname to be sent through SNI. HTTPS requests send media segments and playlists to YouTube.
What the encoder must handle A continuous encoder feed; HLS segment and media-playlist rules do not apply. YouTube Help specifies TS segments 1–4 seconds long and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. The developer specification calls for muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, up to 60 fps, and Media Playlists rather than Master Playlists.
Latency Google describes RTMPS as a good choice for ordinary user content, particularly when low latency is needed. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because delivery uses segments.
When to consider it When your server or encoder supports it and you want a conventional, potentially low-latency ingest path. When the encoder or media requirements call for HLS and the higher latency is acceptable.

Confirm the exact endpoint and settings in YouTube’s current documentation and the encoder’s documentation. Google’s technical guide covers RTMPS ingestion; YouTube’s instructions cover HLS ingestion and the HLS developer specification. RTMPS is not plain RTMP: a protocol, hostname, port, TLS, or SNI mismatch can prevent the connection.

  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Verify the incoming feed, then end the stream

Before making a scheduled broadcast public, check that YouTube has received the expected video and audio in its preview and that stream health does not show a problem. YouTube’s Live Streaming API status fields can flag conditions including low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio; see the liveStreams resource documentation.

When the broadcast is finished, use End Stream for the scheduled stream and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that rule should not be assumed to cover streams lasting 12 hours or longer. See YouTube’s live-stream setup and ending guidance.

Troubleshooting

  • YouTube shows no incoming preview: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key were copied from this stream, and the selected protocol matches the configured endpoint.
  • RTMPS connection or SSL error: Check that the endpoint is the correct RTMPS hostname, the connection uses port 443, and TLS sends that hostname through SNI. A plain RTMP connection will not satisfy an RTMPS endpoint.
  • YouTube rejects or struggles with HLS: Check the HTTPS POST/PUT transport, TS segment type and 1–4 second duration, rolling media playlist, and the limit of five outstanding segments. Also confirm the encoder follows YouTube’s supported HLS formats.
  • Video health warning: Inspect the bitrate and frame rate being sent, and confirm an audio feed is present. Use the encoder’s status and YouTube stream health to isolate whether the issue is at the source or ingest.
  • The playlist will not load or loop: The remedy depends on the media-server product and version. Consult its documentation for playlist import, playback scheduling, and repeat behavior; YouTube’s destination settings cannot supply those controls.
  • The stream is public earlier than intended: Stop and verify the stream’s visibility and scheduled event settings in Live Control Room before restarting. Do not rely on a presumed default privacy setting.
