To send a video playlist to YouTube Live around the clock from Docker, run FFmpeg in a long-lived container, mount the playlist media into it, and publish to the current ingest address and stream key shown in your YouTube Live Control Room. Docker can restart an exited container, but it does not guarantee a seamless reconnect or restore the YouTube broadcast; test the complete pipeline before leaving it unattended.
How the Docker-to-YouTube setup fits together
The host runs Docker. A container runs FFmpeg, which reads media mounted from the host and sends an audio/video feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube treats that incoming feed and the viewer-facing live video as separate resources: the API calls them a liveStream and a liveBroadcast. A stream key is an ingest credential, not the public URL viewers use.
YouTube’s API guide documents a 24/7 broadcast workflow in which a separate broadcast can be completed while the continuous broadcast carries on: “However, you don’t stop streaming video since the 24/7 broadcast continues.” That guidance concerns the relationship between broadcasts and a continuing stream; it does not mean FFmpeg, the network, or a Docker container cannot fail. YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcasts and streams (updated September 14, 2026).
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to its current Live Control Room settings.
- A Docker host that can stay powered on and connected to the internet, plus enough storage for the playlist media.
- An FFmpeg image or your own image with the required input formats, codecs, and protocol support.
- A playlist and media files that you have the rights to stream. Confirm that the source files play correctly and have the audio and video you expect.
Live-streaming eligibility, ingest settings, and available controls are channel-specific. Use the settings shown for your own intended stream; do not rely on an endpoint or key copied from an unrelated example.

1. Get the current YouTube ingest settings
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current primary ingest address and stream key/name for that stream. If your setup will use a backup ingest address, obtain that from the same settings.
- Choose an ingest protocol supported by both your YouTube stream settings and FFmpeg. RTMPS is a practical default where supported; YouTube describes it as encrypted and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency.
- Keep the key secret. Supply it at runtime through an environment variable or a suitable secret mechanism for your deployment. Do not commit it in a public Compose file, bake it into an image, or expose it in routine logs.
YouTube’s API describes the ingestion address and stream name as the information needed to transmit to a stream. Its reference also exposes stream status and health information. Consult the values for your account rather than hard-coding a host or assuming all stream keys share identical settings: LiveStreams API reference.
2. Make the playlist available inside the container
FFmpeg can read only paths visible inside its container. Keep the video files and playlist on the Docker host, then mount their directory into the container. A read-only mount is a sensible choice when FFmpeg only needs to play the files. Choose an input or concat approach that matches the actual media; playlist behavior depends on codecs, durations, timestamps, and whether audio and video should advance together.

Do not assume a playlist of mixed files can be joined by stream-copying without changes. Differences in resolution, codec, frame rate, audio layout, or timestamps can require normalization or re-encoding. There is no single reliable FFmpeg command for every playlist, so verify the command against the selected FFmpeg build and the files you will broadcast.
3. Choose an ingest protocol
| Protocol | What to consider |
|---|---|
| RTMPS | YouTube describes it as encrypted and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. Use it for a conventional continuous FFmpeg feed when your FFmpeg build and YouTube stream settings support it. |
| RTMP | YouTube supports it, but its protocol comparison does not describe it as encrypted. Prefer an encrypted option when available for your workflow. |
| HLS | Encrypted and supports additional codec/HDR possibilities, including HEVC and HDR. Its segment-based delivery has higher latency and requires specific playlist and segment settings. |
For HLS, YouTube’s setup instructions require HTTPS, TS segments, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. These requirements make HLS a configured workflow rather than a drop-in substitute for an RTMPS destination. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison (updated June 1, 2026) and HLS setup instructions.

4. Run FFmpeg in a long-lived Docker container
Use a maintained FFmpeg image or build and pin an image with the codecs and protocols your files require. Mount the media directory, pass the stream key without putting it into the image, and configure FFmpeg to read the playlist and send its output to the current YouTube ingest settings. The exact command depends on your media and selected protocol; a public community setup illustrates looped local inputs, but it is an example rather than an official command guaranteed for every format: 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes.
Set a Docker restart policy appropriate to your deployment so Docker can restart a container that exits. Docker documents restart policies as a way to start containers automatically: Start containers automatically. A restart policy supervises container lifetime only. It does not establish that FFmpeg will reconnect without a gap, resume at the desired playlist position, or return the YouTube broadcast to the intended state.

5. Test the feed and its recovery
- Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast if that option is available for your channel.
- Check the incoming stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room. The API health and status fields can expose configuration issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or no audio stream.
- Watch and listen to the viewer-facing output. Confirm that the audio is present, the picture is correct, and every playlist item transitions as intended.
- Let at least one complete playlist cycle finish. Note whether playback returns to the beginning or continues as you expect.
- Force an FFmpeg process or container restart and observe what happens: whether it reconnects, where playback resumes, and whether the YouTube broadcast remains in the desired state.
- Review container logs for FFmpeg exits and network errors. Keep the stream key out of logs and other shared output.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | Wrong or stale ingest address/key, a protocol mismatch, or FFmpeg lacking protocol support. | Copy the current settings for the intended stream from YouTube Studio; confirm the selected protocol and the FFmpeg build’s support. |
| The picture appears but there is no sound | The source lacks an audio stream, the wrong track is selected, or the output configuration is incompatible. | Play the source files locally, inspect the selected audio track and output, then check YouTube’s stream-health information for a no-audio issue. |
| YouTube reports a configuration or quality issue | The incoming feed may have low video bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, or another setting inconsistent with the stream. | Read the specific health/status issue in YouTube Studio or the API and adjust the FFmpeg output to fit the intended stream configuration. |
| A playlist item fails or transitions badly | Mixed codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, or timestamps may not be compatible with the chosen sequence method. | Test each item and transition; select an input/concat method appropriate to those files and normalize or encode where needed. |
| The container restarts but the live feed stays down or resumes at the wrong point | A restart policy restarted the process, but FFmpeg reconnect behavior, playback position, or YouTube broadcast state was not restored as assumed. | Reproduce a forced restart during testing, inspect FFmpeg logs, and verify reconnect and playlist behavior as separate requirements. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Docker host, computer, or home internet connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
Copyright and channel suitability
A technically healthy feed does not establish that the channel is eligible for monetization or that the content complies with YouTube policies. Use only material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules, including how it evaluates reused content. A playlist that can be streamed is not automatically cleared for public use.
