Short answer: Wowza Streaming Engine documents forwarding an already-live source to YouTube Live, but its guide does not show how to loop a prerecorded file continuously. Wowza Video documentation separately lists hosted-file inputs and a 24×7 channel mode; it does not establish that a file automatically repeats in that mode. So you can follow the documented Wowza-to-YouTube steps for a live source, but do not rely on either product for unattended prerecorded looping until Wowza confirms the exact supported workflow.
First, identify which Wowza product you are using
“Wowza” can mean different products with different workflows. Wowza Streaming Engine is software you configure to forward an incoming source stream to YouTube. Wowza Video is a hosted service whose documentation covers both file inputs and a 24×7 channel mode, but does not connect those features into a verified looping workflow.

If you have one prerecorded documentary and need it to restart automatically when it ends, the decisive question is not just whether Wowza accepts a file or offers a 24×7 mode. You need a documented playout mechanism that feeds YouTube continuously and repeats the file as required. The cited official materials do not verify that complete setup.
How to forward a live source from Wowza Streaming Engine to YouTube
These steps cover the documented Streaming Engine route for forwarding an incoming, already-live stream. They do not configure prerecorded-file scheduling or looping.

- Create the destination in YouTube Studio. Create a live stream and copy its Stream URL and stream key (also called the stream name/key in Wowza’s guide). Treat the key as a credential; do not publish or share it.
- Prepare a Live application in Wowza Streaming Engine. In the Streaming Engine Manager, create a Live application if one does not already exist. Use the application that receives the source stream.
- Add a YouTube Live Stream Target. In the application’s Stream Targets settings, add a target and choose YouTube Live. Enter the source stream name, YouTube destination host, application, and stream key. The application is the part that appears after the host in YouTube’s stream URL. Use the default RTMP port, 1935; the destination application instance can be left blank.
- Enable the target. Enable Stream Targets for the application and enable the individual YouTube target. Restart the application or server if the interface prompts you to do so.
- Start and verify the source. Start the incoming source stream. Confirm that Wowza reports the source and target as active, and check YouTube Live Control Room for a preview before relying on the broadcast. The source must include audio.
For the product’s current screens and target configuration, use Wowza’s Streaming Engine instructions. YouTube’s URL and key are destination credentials; they do not create a source or make a prerecorded file loop.
What Wowza Video documents for files and 24×7 channels
Wowza Video’s YouTube-specific guide describes creating a YouTube Live stream, selecting the highest available output rendition in Wowza Video, then adding an external service with provider RTMP. Enter the primary YouTube Stream URL and stream key; the guide also describes an optional backup URL for redundancy. It says YouTube performs transcoding for this route. Separate Wowza Video Legacy setup documentation lists “Stream from File” inputs as publicly accessible .mp3 or H.264-encoded .mp4/.flv files, reachable over HTTP, HTTPS, GS, or S3. The same legacy reference identifies 24×7 as an always-on billing mode. It says 24×7 streams continue until manually or schedule-stopped, cannot be recorded, do not support 4K, and cannot have their billing mode changed after stream creation. Wowza describes the channel purpose as “A 24×7 channel is for always on, as opposed to a single live stream for a single event.” These are details from Wowza Video Legacy documentation, not a statement about every current Wowza product or plan. The page does not say a file repeats or that a playlist is supported. Check the current product documentation and plan support before deploying.
Check output requirements before going live
Wowza’s YouTube Video guide lists a maximum output of 2160 (3840×2160) at 60 fps and an I-frame at least every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. These are requirements stated in Wowza’s guide updated 2025-02-24, not a guarantee that every Wowza product, input, or plan supports those settings. Requirements can change, so verify YouTube’s current encoder settings and your Wowza configuration before production. If you use Wowza Video Legacy’s 24×7 mode, its cited documentation says that mode does not support 4K.

Can Wowza loop a prerecorded video?
The official materials cited here do not confirm that Wowza Video repeats a file or supports a playlist in 24×7 mode. They establish two separate facts—Wowza Video Legacy lists certain hosted-file inputs, and it describes an always-on channel mode—but not the connection between them. The Streaming Engine guide likewise documents forwarding an incoming live source, not a file loop. Ask Wowza support for the current product-specific steps and plan constraints before promising a continuous prerecorded stream.
Do not infer looping from the phrase “24×7.” In the Legacy documentation, that describes the channel’s operating mode and stop conditions; it does not specify what happens when a source file reaches its end.

Validate the broadcast and troubleshoot before relying on it
- YouTube shows no preview: Confirm the target is enabled, the incoming Wowza source is active, and the YouTube Stream URL and key match the current YouTube Live stream. Check both Wowza’s target status and the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
- The target will not connect: Recheck the destination host and application against YouTube’s Stream URL, use RTMP port 1935 where the documented Streaming Engine setup calls for it, and verify the key. If Wowza prompted for a restart after enabling Stream Targets, complete it.
- Video appears but there is no sound: Wowza’s Streaming Engine guide says the outgoing stream must include audio. Check that the source actually carries an audio track.
- The stream ends when the file finishes: The cited Wowza material does not document an automatic repeat. Do not treat the 24×7 mode as proof of looping; confirm the required playout behavior with Wowza before scheduling unattended operation.
- Resolution or frame-rate settings are rejected: Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the selected Wowza product’s supported output and plan. The Wowza Video guide’s stated limits may change, and Wowza Video Legacy 24×7 documentation excludes 4K.
