For an immersive presentation, he recommends IMAX or Dolby Atmos, saying the film’s sound was constructed for those systems. He does not call 70mm categorically better: he says film and digital have different qualities and strengths.
Villeneuve’s first choice is the theater
Asked how audiences should see the film, Villeneuve put the venue ahead of the format. “The most important thing, first of all, is that no matter how you see it, you see it in a theater,” he told ScreenCrush in an interview published February 26, 2024. He pointed to the landscape, the immersive feeling, and the sound design as parts of the experience he wanted audiences to feel at full scale. Read the ScreenCrush interview.
That is a recommendation from the director, not a claim that every theater presentation is identical or that a particular format has been independently measured as best.
IMAX or Dolby Atmos for immersive sound
Villeneuve recommended “either IMAX or the [Dolby] Atmos,” citing the precision of their immersive systems. He said the sound was made for Dolby Atmos and IMAX and “constructed for those systems.” If your priority is the immersive sound design he describes, those are the formats he specifically names.

His interview does not provide technical measurements comparing theaters, nor does it establish which presentations are available near you. Check the local theater’s listing to confirm the format for a specific screening.
Is 70mm better than IMAX or digital?
Villeneuve does not give 70mm a universal win. He said he worked hard on the digital version, and that seeing the 70mm and IMAX prints is “quite moving,” but emphasized that film and digital have different qualities, strengths, and advantages. His comments support choosing according to the presentation you can attend and your own preference—not treating one format as objectively superior.

How to choose a local screening
- Start with the cinema listing. Look for the specific format attached to the screening; availability and showtimes vary by location and date.
- Prioritize immersive sound? Choose an IMAX or Dolby Atmos screening if offered, matching Villeneuve’s stated recommendation.
- Prefer film? If a 70mm print screening is available, it is a distinct option Villeneuve describes as having its own qualities—not a guaranteed upgrade over digital.
- Compare actual options. If the formats you want are not showing locally, select the theater presentation that is available and suits your preferences.
