Put each change in a row with a due time and the IDs it needs, then let an installable time-driven trigger process due rows. This schedules playlist membership or order changes; it does not schedule a live broadcast to start or stop.
Know what the schedule will change
YouTube treats a live broadcast and a playlist as separate resources. The YouTube Live Streaming API manages broadcasts and their associated streams. The YouTube Data API’s playlist-item methods change what is in a playlist and, in some cases, its order. If you need a broadcast to begin at a particular time, that is a separate job from changing a playlist.
This guide uses a Sheet as the schedule and status log, Apps Script as the runner, and the YouTube Data API to perform the edits. Google’s documentation describes these building blocks, but does not provide a complete ready-made scheduler for this particular workflow. The sheet layout and processor below are an implementation pattern, not a Google-provided template.
Set up the sheet and authorization
Make a schedule tab
Create a tab named Schedule. Put these exact headings in row 1, in this order:

| Status | Set new rows to PENDING. The processor changes this to COMPLETED or ERROR. |
| LastRunAt | Written by the processor when it attempts the row. |
| Error | Contains the API or validation error when a row fails. |
Keep IDs as plain text. For a move, obtain the playlist-item ID for the video in the target playlist; a video ID alone is not enough to identify which playlist entry to update. Use a position only when the playlist’s ordering option is Manual.
Enable the YouTube service
- Open the Google Sheet and select Extensions > Apps Script.
- In the Apps Script editor, open Services, choose Add a service, select YouTube Data API, and add it. The advanced YouTube service must be enabled for calls such as
YouTube.PlaylistItems.insertandYouTube.PlaylistItems.update. - Use an account authorized to manage the target channel. The account that creates the installable trigger will also be the account under which it runs; it must retain the necessary YouTube authorization and channel access.
- Set the Apps Script project’s time zone to the time zone you intend to use for schedule interpretation. Enter due times in the Sheet accordingly, and test with a row scheduled a few minutes ahead.
Add the scheduled processor
The example below expects the nine columns listed above in exactly that order and a tab named Schedule. It processes due rows that have status PENDING. A successful API call is recorded as COMPLETED; validation or API failures are recorded as ERROR for inspection. It deliberately does not retry error rows automatically, because blindly repeating an insert could add the same video more than once.

}In Apps Script, save the project, select processPlaylistSchedule, and click Run once to grant authorization and check that the Sheet and YouTube service are available. Then select installScheduleTrigger and run it once to create the recurring trigger. Running the installer again replaces its existing trigger for this handler instead of creating a second one.
Schedule an insert or a move
Add a video
For an insert, fill in DueAt, INSERT, PlaylistId, and VideoId, and set Status to PENDING. Leave ItemId and Position blank. The API request needs the playlist ID and a resource ID identifying the video. Google lists a cost of 50 quota units for each playlistItems.insert call, so account for that when planning many scheduled additions.

Move an existing item
For a move, fill in DueAt, MOVE, PlaylistId, VideoId, ItemId, and the desired zero-based Position, then set Status to PENDING. The update needs the playlist-item ID as well as the playlist and video identifiers. The playlist must be set to Manual ordering for a position change to work.
The example updates the snippet part and supplies the playlist and video resource identifiers it needs to retain. YouTube’s update behavior can clear mutable fields omitted from requested parts, so if you expand the request to include other mutable fields, deliberately include the values you want to preserve. Do not use contentDetails.startAt or contentDetails.endAt to schedule when a video plays within a playlist: those fields are deprecated and ignored if set.

Understand timing and failure handling
Triggers are not exact-time alarms
Apps Script time-driven triggers can run as frequently as every minute, with other available intervals extending through once a month. A trigger is not guaranteed to fire at the exact minute or second you specify. Google’s documentation gives the example that a recurring 9 a.m. trigger may run between 9 and 10 a.m., then keep a consistent time. Design the sheet around an acceptable execution window rather than a second-perfect start time.
Review the row status before retrying
A row becomes eligible when its due time has passed and its status is still PENDING. The script marks a successful call complete and logs a failed call as an error; review the error and the playlist before changing an error row back to pending. A network or execution interruption can make the outcome uncertain, so the status log is an operational aid, not a guarantee of exactly-once execution.

- Missing or invalid IDs: verify the playlist ID and video ID, and for a move confirm that ItemId identifies the entry in that playlist.
- Permission or authorization failure: reauthorize the script with an account that can manage the target channel. Remember that scheduled executions use the trigger creator’s account.
- Position update rejected: confirm the playlist uses Manual ordering and that the requested position is a non-negative integer.
- Item cannot be accessed or operation is unsupported: check that the item still belongs to the specified playlist and that the account can access it; correct the row and inspect the returned error before retrying.
- No scheduled changes occur: check the trigger exists, the tab name and header order match the script, due times are actual date-time values, and statuses are exactly
PENDING. Review Apps Script execution records and failure notifications. - Unexpected duplicate entries: check whether a previous insert succeeded despite an interrupted run before resetting its status. The sample does not attempt to identify and deduplicate inserts.
