How to Schedule Video Playback in OBS for a Continuous YouTube Stream

Loop a single video or playlist in OBS, connect it to a scheduled YouTube event, and test the stream before viewers arrive.

To loop one video while streaming on YouTube, add it to OBS as a Media Source and enable Loop. To play several videos in sequence, use a VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Schedule the YouTube event separately, connect OBS using that event’s stream URL and key, then test the feed before the broadcast begins.

Choose the OBS source for your playback

What you want to play OBS source Loop setting What to know
One video, repeated Media Source Loop OBS repeats the selected file when playback finishes.
Several videos, one after another VLC Video Loop Playlist VLC must be installed. OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

For multiple videos, VLC Video also has a visibility behavior setting. Its default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. Check that behavior if your scene changes or the source may be hidden during the broadcast.

Set up one video to repeat

  1. Add the source: In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear, use the Sources panel’s + button, and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
  2. Select the file: In the source properties, enable the local-file option if needed and browse to the video you want to play.
  3. Enable looping: Turn on Loop, then confirm the source properties. OBS documents this option as repeating the file after playback completes. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022.
  4. Check the scene: Confirm the video is visible and that its audio is routed as intended in the OBS audio mixer. Play it in OBS and inspect the preview before connecting to YouTube.

Set up a playlist to repeat

  1. Install VLC: Install the VLC version that matches your OBS architecture. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.
  2. Add the source: In the desired OBS scene, select the Sources panel’s + button and choose VLC Video.
  3. Build the playlist: Add the video files to the source playlist and arrange them in the order you want them to play.
  4. Loop the playlist: Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties if playback should return to the first item after the last one finishes.
  5. Check visibility behavior: Review the VLC source’s setting for what happens when it is not visible. OBS’s documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible; use a scene arrangement that keeps the source visible if you need playback to continue through scene changes.
  6. Test the sequence: Preview the scene and confirm the right files play in order, the video is visible, and audio is present.

Schedule the YouTube event and connect OBS

Scheduling in YouTube Studio creates an upcoming event; it does not start the encoder. OBS handles video playback and sends the feed, while YouTube handles the event and its watch page. Configure both sides.

  1. Schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, go to Manage, and schedule the event. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe creating a live stream with an encoder.
  2. Get the event connection details: Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets the encoder send a feed. Treat it like a password: do not share or publish it.
  3. Connect OBS: In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service or a custom connection as appropriate, and enter the event’s stream URL and key if the fields are requested. Keep the key private.
  4. Start the encoder at the scheduled time: Start streaming from OBS, then check the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s on-screen Go live flow for the event.
  5. Verify the audience view: Confirm the watch page is available to the intended audience and check both picture and sound. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers event settings.

Test and monitor the broadcast

A looping source keeps its media playing; it does not, by itself, ensure an uninterrupted broadcast. OBS must remain open and connected, and the YouTube event must be started through its live flow. YouTube recommends preparing an encoder in advance, previewing the feed, checking stream health, confirming watch-page access, monitoring audio and video, and testing failover when applicable. Its live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance provide further preparation advice. Choose encoder quality to suit the available connection, test before going live, and review stream health; looping is not a substitute for monitoring.

Keep the video eligible and rights-cleared

Before scheduling a documentary or other recorded program, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast its picture, soundtrack, and any embedded third-party material on YouTube. A successful OBS preview only confirms that the encoder feed is reaching the event; it does not establish that you have permission to stream the material or that it complies with YouTube’s rules. Review the relevant rights and platform requirements before making the event public.

Common problems and fixes

  • The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • A file plays once and stops: For a single Media Source, verify Loop is enabled. For a VLC playlist, verify Loop Playlist is enabled.
  • Playlist playback stops after a scene change: The VLC source may be hidden. Check its visibility behavior and whether the source remains visible in the active scene.
  • YouTube shows no incoming video: Confirm OBS is streaming, the event’s URL and key are entered correctly, and the scheduled event is the one open in Live Control Room. Check the encoder preview and stream health.
  • The feed arrives but the event is not live to viewers: Scheduling alone does not start the encoder or complete the live flow. Start OBS at the right time and follow the event’s on-screen Go live steps.
  • Picture works but sound does not: Check the source’s audio and the OBS audio mixer, then verify sound in YouTube’s incoming preview before the event begins.
  • The stream drops or becomes unstable: Review YouTube’s stream health, check the connection and encoder setup, and monitor the feed. A source’s loop setting does not provide broadcast recovery.
