For a spare laptop, the most reliable do-it-yourself approach is to stream from YouTube Studio’s encoder workflow, begin with modest settings, and treat “always-on” as supervised sessions rather than one guaranteed, uninterrupted broadcast. Test with the actual game and network before making the stream public. What “always-on” means with a spare laptop
A laptop can encode and send gameplay to YouTube, but it does not make a stream immune to network interruptions, overheating, power cuts, or YouTube’s session limits. Plan to supervise operation, check stream health, and restart when needed. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one longer broadcast will be archived in the same way.
There is no evidence that an unspecified spare laptop can run a particular game at a particular quality for 24 hours. Performance depends on the laptop, game, encoder settings, cooling, network, and local power. Test your own setup under representative conditions.
Set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Check eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream with an encoder. YouTube’s general eligibility page says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and choose an encoder stream. Keep the stream private or unlisted for testing.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both in your encoder’s streaming settings. A stream key works like a password: do not show it on screen, share it, or include it in a recording. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure video and audio. Choose a resolution and frame rate your laptop can sustain while running the game. Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as an ingest starting point, not as proof the laptop can encode without dropped frames.
- Start the encoder and preview in Live Control Room. Check that video and audio arrive correctly before starting the public broadcast.
- Go live and monitor stream health. Watch for connection warnings, dropped frames, or encoding trouble. YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

Choose settings the laptop and connection can sustain
Start with YouTube’s H.264 ingest guidance
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Its general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. For H.264, the recommended ingest bitrates include:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guaranteed laptop performance targets. A game can add substantial load, and a machine that handles a short test may struggle as it heats up. Review YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before choosing an output.

Compare 720p60 with 1080p30 by testing
If the laptop and connection can sustain both, compare the actual gameplay. 720p60 may make fast movement look smoother; 1080p30 provides more pixels but a lower frame rate. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30, so 1080p30 is a reasonable first test on a constrained setup—not a universal performance winner. Check image clarity, encoding load, upload headroom, and stability in your own gameplay.
Measure upload capacity, not download speed
YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom. Measure outbound speed while your home connection is under typical household use, then choose a bitrate that leaves that margin. If the stream struggles, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. A fast download result does not establish that your upload can hold a live stream. Test before relying on the stream
- Run the game and stream for a representative period, rather than judging only from a brief setup check.
- Use a private or unlisted test to verify the game picture, audio levels, stream key, and stream health.
- Watch for dropped frames, stuttering, excessive laptop heat, or audio/video mismatch. Reduce output settings if the laptop cannot keep up.
- Check network stability with other household activity occurring as usual. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- Plan a supervised restart or check before a session reaches 12 hours if preserving an automatic archive matters; YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Keep gameplay original and check rights
Use gameplay you have the right to stream, and check the specific game publisher’s streaming rules. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible for monetization under its “inauthentic content” policy; that policy applies to live streams and channel-wide monetization reviews. Consider adding original commentary, challenge runs, useful tips, or audience interaction rather than leaving an undifferentiated feed running for hours. This does not guarantee monetization.

Estimate laptop electricity cost in India
There is no single reliable India-wide household electricity rate for this calculation. Retail tariffs are set by state electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize consumer classes. Use the energy charge and applicable slab from your own bill.
- Measure the laptop’s average power draw in watts while streaming, ideally with a suitable plug-in meter.
- Calculate approximate monthly consumption: average watts Ă— 24 Ă— 30 Ă· 1,000 = kWh per month.
- Multiply that consumption by the applicable energy charge on your bill. Fixed charges and other adjustments may add to the bill.
For context only, the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff material lists Chandigarh domestic energy charges effective August 1, 2024 of 275 paise/kWh for 0–150 kWh/month, 480 paise/kWh for 151–400 kWh/month, and 540 paise/kWh above 400 kWh/month. Those are dated Chandigarh figures, not a current national rate. See the Central Electricity Authority tariff publication and use your own distribution utility’s bill for a personal estimate.

Plan for local power interruptions
Whether a UPS is worthwhile depends on actual outages where you live and how long you need the laptop and router to keep operating. If you use one, size it for the combined laptop and router load and the desired runtime; the information here cannot establish a suitable model or capacity for your setup.
India’s Ministry of Power says supply and distribution are the responsibility of state governments and distribution utilities. Its March 23, 2026 release reports national rural power availability of 12.5 hours in FY 2015 and 22.6 hours in FY 2025.
