Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then prepare OBS to play the recording and send it to the event as an encoder feed. OBS playback and YouTube’s scheduled event are separate: the documented launch process still requires you to start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, and click Go live.
“YouTube Live playlist” can mean two different things: a playback queue of recordings in OBS, or a YouTube playlist that organizes published videos. This guide covers both.
What you need to schedule a recorded replay
- A YouTube channel that can create a scheduled live event.
- OBS Studio, with the replay file or files available on the computer running OBS.
- For a multi-file queue, VLC installed so OBS can provide its VLC Video source.
- A reliable connection and enough local disk space if you also plan to record a backup.
Scheduling the YouTube event does not, by itself, schedule OBS to play a file or begin sending video. YouTube Help documents scheduling the event and connecting an encoder; OBS documents media playback. The reviewed documentation does not describe a native end-to-end control that triggers both automatically.
Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live → Manage.
- Schedule a stream and enter its title, date and time, audience setting, visibility, and other event details. Interface wording may change.
- Review the event settings and save it. Viewers can find an upcoming scheduled event and opt in to reminders.
- Open the event in Live Control Room when preparing to connect OBS. You will use its encoder connection details and preview during launch.
Prepare the replay in OBS
For one recording: use Media Source
- In OBS, select or create the scene for the event.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the recording file and confirm the source settings. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Compatibility can depend on the file and system.
- Use the source’s loop option only if you want that same recording to repeat. For a one-time replay, leave looping off.
For several recordings: use VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the media items to its playlist in the order they should play. Check the beginning and end of each file so the sequence moves as intended.
- Choose whether the queue should loop or shuffle. For an event replay in a fixed sequence, keep shuffle off; enable looping only if the whole queue should repeat.
- Preview the scene and listen through the transitions. Confirm that the intended audio is audible and that the video fits the scene.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated 2022-01-11, describes single-file playback and VLC playlist controls. Check your installed OBS interface and test the actual files before the event.

Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube event
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select YouTube as the service if available, or choose the option to use a custom streaming server.
- Use the connection details shown for the scheduled event in YouTube Live Control Room. If entering them manually, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding OBS fields.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screen captures, recordings, or messages. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- Before the event, start playback in OBS and check the scene, picture, and audio. Avoid leaving the replay running publicly before the scheduled start.
Launch the event at the scheduled time
- YouTube Help recommends setting up an encoder event at least two hours in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees of connection time.
- At the planned launch, start streaming from OBS so it sends the replay feed to YouTube.
- Wait for the incoming stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check that picture and sound are correct.
- When the preview is ready and it is time to begin, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the feed; this documented workflow separately uses YouTube’s Go live control to begin the event.
- Monitor playback and the event while it runs. Keep the OBS computer and its network connection available for the full broadcast.
End the stream and organize the replay
- When the recording has finished, end the live event using the YouTube and encoder workflow. Confirm the broadcast has ended in Live Control Room.
- YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. YouTube also recommends recording a local archive as a backup; do not treat the online archive as the only copy of an important event.
- After the archive is available, add it to a YouTube playlist if you want to group it with other published events. This YouTube playlist is for organizing videos; it is separate from the OBS VLC playback queue.
Choose playback and backup settings for the event
One file or a queue
| Need | OBS choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Play one recording once | Media Source | Confirm looping is off and the file’s audio and picture work. |
| Play recordings in a set order | VLC Video | Install VLC, arrange the items, and test transitions. |
| Repeat a recording or queue | Use the relevant source’s loop control | Decide whether the individual file or the full list should repeat. |
Whether to record a local backup
A local copy provides a fallback if the online archive is missing or unusable. Before enabling local recording, consider the available disk space, recording quality and bitrate, and the consequences of losing the event file. The cited guidance does not establish a universal storage size or require a particular device.
Troubleshoot common problems
The VLC Video source is missing
OBS may not detect VLC. Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the Sources panel again.

YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Check that OBS is streaming, that the scheduled event is the one open in Live Control Room, and that its stream URL and key were copied correctly into OBS. If the key may have been exposed, reset it rather than continuing to use it.
The video appears but has no sound
Check that the selected media source is active, that its audio is routed through OBS, and that the mixer shows activity during playback. Listen to the scene before connecting to the event.
