First confirm the radio audio is playing, then check the encoder’s input and routing, and finally inspect YouTube Live Control Room for timestamped stream-health errors. A moving OBS meter is useful, but it does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving sound.
Trace where the audio disappears
A silent stream can result from a problem before the encoder, in the encoder’s capture or routing, or between the encoder and YouTube ingestion. Work through those points in order rather than changing unrelated settings.

These observations point to the next place to check; none guarantees a particular cause.
Check the source and the encoder input
- Confirm the radio source is producing audio. Play it locally or check the source application’s own output or status. If it is silent there, troubleshoot playback or the source before changing YouTube settings.
- Watch the corresponding OBS mixer meter while audio should be playing. If the meter does not move, check that playback has begun, the intended source is selected, and its capture device is connected and available. OBS explains that a missing input indicator means no audio is reaching OBS at that point; a disconnected audio interface is one possible cause.
- Check capture and mixer state. Make sure the source and its mixer output are not muted, and that the source is routed to the stream. Use OBS’s mixer and monitoring controls to help identify where the signal stops.
A moving meter confirms activity at that point in OBS, not that the complete encoder output—or YouTube stream—contains audio.

Test what the encoder is sending
Check the stream directly in your encoder, including the audio and video sources routed to it. YouTube’s guidance for streams that look or sound bad is to check the quality of the sources routed to the encoder. If the encoder output is silent, continue investigating the source, capture and routing path. If it sounds healthy, shift attention to the outbound connection and YouTube’s ingestion status.
If you record a local archive, check whether it contains audio. Comparing that recording with the encoder output and the YouTube stream can help establish whether the problem occurs before or after the encoder creates its output.

Read YouTube’s stream-health errors
Open the stream’s health information in YouTube Live Control Room. It checks the stream being sent and displays errors with timestamps; its error list includes an ingestion stream with no audio. Note when an error occurs and compare that time with any change or interruption in playback, the encoder or the connection. After correcting the audio path, check whether the error clears.
Only change audio and video formats when the reported error points to a format problem. YouTube’s guidance for an incorrect-format ingestion error specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. That is not a universal fix for silence: an error-free format does not establish that the selected source is playing or routed correctly.

When to check or replace audio hardware
If OBS does not receive input and an audio interface is disconnected or missing, reconnect it, select the correct device in the encoder and test again. A disconnected interface is one possible explanation, not proof that the hardware has failed. Consider replacement only after testing confirms the existing interface is defective; hardware is not a general-purpose cure for a silent stream.
