Schedule the live event in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg as the encoder to send your video file to that event in real time. Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not start playback. For a scheduled stream, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and select Go live unless you have deliberately enabled and tested auto-start.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.
- A video file that FFmpeg can read, plus an FFmpeg build with the encoders you plan to use.
- A reliable upload connection with enough headroom for the stream’s chosen bitrate.
- Access to YouTube Studio so you can schedule the event, retrieve its stream URL and stream key, and monitor the preview.
Plan these as two separate jobs: YouTube Studio schedules the event; FFmpeg sends the media feed. Starting FFmpeg at a particular clock time is a separate automation task, not something the YouTube event scheduler or the command itself does.
Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Manage.
- Select Schedule stream. Reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new event, then set the title, visibility, and schedule details appropriate to your broadcast.
- Review the event’s stream settings, including whether auto-start is enabled. With manual start, expect to inspect the preview and select Go live yourself. Auto-start changes that step; test it before relying on it.
- Share the scheduled event URL if viewers need to find the watch page or set a reminder.
Scheduling lets viewers receive reminders and gives you an event page to share. It does not make the video file play automatically. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and encoder instructions for current Studio labels and behavior.
Get the stream URL and protect the stream key
In the scheduled stream’s Live Control Room settings, copy the stream URL and the stream key for the intended protocol. The URL is the ingest destination; the key authenticates your encoder. Use the exact values YouTube provides rather than a URL or key copied from an example.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a script or repository, or leave it exposed in logs.
- If you think the key has been compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg’s destination.
- Make sure the protocol and settings associated with the key match the output you send. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it; follow the precise endpoint and protocol instructions shown for your stream.
Choose FFmpeg settings for the source and YouTube profile
There is no one bitrate that is right for every live stream. Choose a resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio configuration using YouTube’s current profile-specific recommendations and the capacity of your upload connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the place to check the current values; they can change.
Transcode when the source needs a compatible output
Transcoding lets FFmpeg produce a selected codec and bitrate, but consumes CPU or GPU resources and may change the source’s visual quality. H.264 video with AAC audio is a common compatible output shape, but select actual values from YouTube’s current recommendations for the stream profile.

Copy streams only when the source is compatible
Stream copy avoids re-encoding, but only works when the source codecs, container, timestamps, and YouTube ingest requirements are compatible. It offers less control over bitrate and output characteristics. If a file has multiple audio or video tracks, explicitly map the intended streams rather than assuming FFmpeg will select the one you want.
Send the video file with FFmpeg
The following is an illustrative template, not a guaranteed universal command. Replace the file path, ingest endpoint, and private key with your own values. Confirm option availability, encoder support, and option order against your installed FFmpeg version. Some builds do not include libx264; a source may also need explicit stream mapping, scaling, or other audio handling.

ffmpeg -re -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY>"
-re is the key pacing option for this file-input workflow: FFmpeg documents it as reading input at its native frame rate, mainly to simulate a live input. Without live-style pacing, a file can be consumed faster than real time. The example uses FLV output, which FFmpeg documents for RTMP workflows, but do not assume its endpoint syntax applies unchanged to every protocol. Follow the exact RTMPS URL and instructions YouTube supplies.
This template intentionally omits video bitrate and keyframe values: choose them for the selected resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current settings table. FFmpeg’s documentation covers input and output options, including stream handling and the FLV muxer. Check the local build’s encoders and the source file before broadcasting.

Check preview and start the scheduled event
- Start FFmpeg at the time you intend to send the feed. Watch its output for connection errors, then open the event in Live Control Room.
- Wait for YouTube to show the incoming preview. Confirm that the picture is correct, audio is present and intelligible, and the stream quality indicators look acceptable.
- Check that the watch page is accessible as intended. For a manually started scheduled event, select Go live only after the preview is ready. If auto-start is enabled, verify its behavior in advance rather than assuming the event’s scheduling time starts the file.
- Monitor the stream while it is live, especially for dropped connection or quality warnings. YouTube recommends preparing and checking the stream before the event; see its streaming guidance.
If you need FFmpeg to launch automatically at a specific time, an operating-system scheduler or wrapper can start the process, but that is separate from scheduling the YouTube event. Configure and test that automation independently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Stop the feed and check the archive
When the broadcast is over, stop sending content from FFmpeg, then end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube Help currently states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; because this is platform behavior that can change, check the current YouTube encoder instructions before relying on an archive. Verify the resulting video and its visibility in Studio.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview | FFmpeg is not connected to the scheduled event, or the endpoint, key, or protocol does not match. | Confirm the event’s stream URL and key in Live Control Room, check the selected protocol and FFmpeg’s output destination, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors. |
| The file finishes much too quickly | The input is being read faster than its native playback rate. | For file input, include -re before the input and verify that FFmpeg is pacing the feed. |
| Preview appears, but the event is not public/live | The scheduled event is awaiting a manual start, or auto-start is not configured as expected. | Check the event’s auto-start setting. If using manual start, inspect the preview and select Go live. |
| Video or audio is missing or wrong | The file may contain multiple tracks, unsupported source streams, or unexpected stream selection. | Inspect the source streams, explicitly map the intended audio and video, and transcode to a compatible output if stream copy is unsuitable. |
| Connection or quality warnings | The upload link may not sustain the chosen bitrate, or the selected output profile may not suit the source or ingest settings. | Check YouTube’s current recommendations for the actual resolution and frame rate, leave reliable upload headroom, and test the setup before an important stream. |
| FFmpeg reports that an encoder is unavailable | The installed build may not include the encoder named in the command. | Check the installed build’s encoder availability and choose an available compatible encoder or a suitable stream-copy path. |
Copyright and monetization checks for recorded material
A pre-recorded file is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules. Confirm that you own or have permission to use the footage, music, and other material in the recording; live delivery does not remove those obligations. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance before broadcasting. Separate from copyright, a channel’s eligibility for monetization can depend on YouTube’s policies, including its rules on reused content; a live format alone does not establish that a recording qualifies. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies for the rules that apply to your channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded recordings playing around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to running FFmpeg on a computer you maintain. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Nothing at home has to stay on: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection are not responsible for keeping it going.
- Every slot uses one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included whichever billing length you choose; only the length changes. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
