To play prerecorded podcast episodes continuously, build an ordered playlist in OBS using its VLC Video Source, enable playlist looping if you want it to repeat, and send OBS’s encoder feed to a separately scheduled YouTube live event. OBS’s built-in playlist handles playback order and looping—not clock-time episode starts. For episodes that must begin at particular times of day, you need a separate automation layer.
What OBS scheduling does—and does not—do
There are two separate jobs. OBS plays the podcast files and supplies the live video-and-audio feed. YouTube Studio creates the live event, its watch page, and the option for viewers to receive reminders. Scheduling an event in YouTube does not arrange episode playback; making an OBS playlist does not schedule a YouTube event.
The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation describes VLC playlist playback, looping, shuffle, and visibility behavior. It does not document a built-in clock scheduler for starting individual playlist items at specified times. A playlist can run in order or shuffle and can repeat; it is not, by itself, a timetable such as “Episode A at 9 a.m., Episode B at noon.”
Set up a continuous episode playlist in OBS
1. Prepare the files
Put the prerecorded episodes in a stable location on the computer running OBS, and play each file to confirm it works. OBS lists supported media types in its media source documentation. Avoid moving or renaming files after adding them to a playlist, because the source needs to find them at their saved locations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Install VLC with the right architecture
OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC Video Source to be available. Match architectures: the OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source is missing, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS, then restart OBS if needed.
3. Create a scene and add the playlist source
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the podcast stream.
- Add a VLC Video Source to that scene and open its properties.
- Add the episode files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them to play. Use this playlist source for a sequence of files rather than assuming separate Media Sources will behave as a timed queue.
- Check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents looping as on by default and shuffle as off by default; confirm the actual settings in the source properties. Leave shuffle off for a fixed episode order. Enable looping if the sequence should repeat, or turn it off for a one-pass queue.
4. Decide what happens when the source is hidden
The VLC source has visibility-related options, including stopping playback when it is not visible and restarting when it becomes visible. If your OBS production switches scenes, decide whether the episode should continue, pause or stop while its source is hidden, and test that behavior. Hiding the OBS application window is not the same thing as making a source invisible within the scene.
5. Check the stream output and audio
Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard if appropriate, check the audio meters while an episode plays, and confirm the scene shows the intended video. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking audio and testing before streaming. Do a short test recording or private/unlisted stream, as appropriate, and listen for missing audio, clipping, silence between files, or unexpected source behavior before relying on the playlist.

Schedule the YouTube live event separately
1. Create the event in YouTube Studio
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule a stream. Set its title, description, privacy and other event details, then check the event page. YouTube’s live stream settings help and encoder setup instructions cover event setup. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming, and viewers may choose to receive reminders.

2. Connect OBS to the event
Use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder settings in OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your channel. YouTube’s interface labels may change, so follow the current Live Control Room prompts for the selected event and encoder.
3. Start the feed and verify the event
At the intended time, start streaming from OBS and check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm that the event is reachable and that its picture and sound are correct. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend preparing in advance, previewing and monitoring the stream.

Channel eligibility can affect whether you can go live. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available after enabling it; that is an enablement wait, not the time needed to schedule an episode. Check YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance for verification and restriction details that apply to your channel.
How to start episodes at specific times
If each episode must start at a clock time, a VLC playlist alone is not enough. The official OBS documentation establishes playlist playback and source behavior, not scheduled starts for individual files. A separate automation layer—such as a third-party OBS plugin—may be able to trigger scene or source changes, but it adds version and configuration dependencies.

An OBS Project forum thread started on January 2, 2023, describes one user’s attempt to use Advanced Scene Switcher for this purpose and reports that the source did not always pause when hidden. Treat that post as anecdotal, version-sensitive experience, not an official procedure or guarantee. See the OBS forum discussion, check the current plugin documentation for your OBS version, and test the exact schedule—including what happens when a scene is hidden, OBS restarts, or an episode runs longer than expected—before using it for a public broadcast.

Keep a YouTube podcast stream rights-safe
Before broadcasting prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the episodes, music, artwork and other included content. A continuous playlist does not make copyrighted material permissible, and a successful test connection is not a copyright clearance. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before scheduling a public stream.

- VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS; the OBS documentation specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Files do not play or the playlist breaks: Check that each file plays locally and remains at the path saved in the source. Remove and re-add a file if its location changed.
- Episodes play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly: Review playlist order, Shuffle Playlist, and Loop Playlist in the VLC source properties.
- Playback changes during a scene switch: Review the VLC visibility options and test whether the source continues, stops or restarts when hidden and shown.
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the intended event, that the stream key has not been changed, and that streaming has actually been started in OBS.
- The preview has picture but no sound: Check OBS audio meters during playback, the source’s audio routing and the selected output configuration; test by listening to a recording or test stream.
- The channel cannot go live yet: Check YouTube’s eligibility and restriction guidance. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available after it is enabled.
Plan for long broadcasts
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a guarantee that a nonstop broadcast will run without interruption, nor should it be taken to mean a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived. Test the complete workflow and monitor the encoder feed rather than treating the archive as a continuity safeguard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can OBS start a different podcast episode at a set time each day?
Not with the documented built-in VLC playlist controls alone; clock-time starts require a separate automation setup.
Can a scheduled YouTube event play my OBS playlist by itself?
No. The event provides the YouTube watch page and reminder option; OBS must supply the encoder feed and playlist playback.
