To play different videos one after another in a single YouTube live broadcast, make an FFmpeg concat list and stream it as one input. To broadcast at different scheduled times, create separate events in YouTube Live Control Room or manage them through YouTube’s Live Streaming API. FFmpeg controls the media sequence; YouTube controls the broadcast schedule.
Choose what you mean by “schedule”
- Play clips in sequence during one live event: Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for compatible files, or its concat filter when the files need to be decoded and normalized before joining.
- Start separate broadcasts at different times: Schedule the events in YouTube Live Control Room or use the YouTube Live Streaming API. A concat list does not create or schedule YouTube events.
- Change the playlist while FFmpeg is running: Do not assume edits to a list will update the active stream. The official documentation cited here does not establish a reliable hot-reload procedure.
Play different videos in one continuous broadcast
1. Check the files before choosing a join method
For the concat demuxer, group files with matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Check that their duration metadata is accurate: FFmpeg uses durations to adjust timestamps, and incorrect duration information can cause artifacts or problems at joins. The FFmpeg project’s concat demuxer documentation says: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).”
If files differ in their video or audio properties, use a concat-filter workflow that decodes and joins the inputs, making their properties compatible in the filter graph before encoding the result. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenation explains the related approaches. The appropriate filter graph and encoding options depend on the actual files; there is no universal command that can be guaranteed to suit every source.
2. Make a concat-demuxer list for compatible files
Create a plain-text file in the order you want the videos played. For example, save the following as videos.txt, replacing the filenames with paths to your own files:

file 'video-2.mp4'

Use paths FFmpeg can access from the directory where you run it. The concat demuxer reads the listed files sequentially and adjusts timestamps so each follows the previous one. This is packet-level concatenation and can avoid re-encoding when the inputs are suitable.
3. Send the sequence to YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the event and copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. Put those values into the output configuration of your FFmpeg command, using the concat list as the input. The exact command depends on your FFmpeg build, source streams, and YouTube output settings, so use the matching options for your files rather than treating a sample command as universal. Keep the stream key private.

Start FFmpeg. For a scheduled YouTube broadcast, wait for the encoder preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube’s current instructions are on its Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder page.
4. Validate the sequence before a public broadcast
Check the actual files in order, including audio and the joins between clips. If you are not ready to broadcast publicly, choose an appropriate private or unlisted event setting. These checks matter because compatibility and duration metadata affect the concat demuxer’s output; the FFmpeg documentation does not promise that arbitrary files will join cleanly.

When to use separate scheduled YouTube events
If each video needs its own event page or start time, schedule separate broadcasts in YouTube rather than putting all the videos in one concat list. YouTube’s Live Streaming API models broadcasts and encoder streams as separate resources. Its documentation describes using one reusable liveStream for recurring broadcasts with shared encoder settings, with only one event live at a time, or creating a separate stream resource for each broadcast.
Either way, create or schedule the broadcast, obtain its server URL and stream key, and configure the encoder for that event. Details are in Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide to broadcasts and streams. This API manages event and stream resources; it does not turn changes to an FFmpeg concat list into a YouTube calendar.

Common problems and what to check
- A join produces glitches or stops: Confirm that demuxer inputs have matching stream characteristics and valid duration metadata. If they do not, use a concat-filter workflow and normalize the streams before encoding.
- Clips are out of order: Check the order of the
fileentries in the concat list; that list determines the sequence. - The scheduled event is not public yet: Check the encoder preview in Live Control Room and use Go live when the scheduled event is ready.
- The stream key is rejected or the encoder cannot connect: Verify that the server URL and stream key belong to the selected event and that they were copied correctly. Do not publish or share the key.
- You expect a running stream to pick up list edits: The reviewed FFmpeg documentation does not establish a dependable way to hot-reload the concat list. Plan and validate the sequence before starting the process.
