The event is the scheduled broadcast; FFmpeg sends the live audio and video feed. A local list of files that FFmpeg plays is not a YouTube playlist, and scheduling a YouTube playlist does not start FFmpeg.
This guide uses a local file list, loops those files through FFmpeg, and sends the resulting feed to YouTube. You can create the event manually in YouTube Studio or manage it with Google’s Live Streaming API.
What “YouTube playlist” means in this setup
There are three separate objects to keep straight:
- A local FFmpeg playlist: a text file on the VPS that tells FFmpeg which media files to play.
- A YouTube live stream: the incoming audio/video feed sent by your encoder, identified by a stream resource and stream key.
- A YouTube live broadcast: the scheduled event and public-facing video that viewers watch.
Google’s Live Streaming API treats a broadcast and a stream as separate resources; the broadcast must be bound to the stream carrying the encoder feed. A stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts, which can suit recurring events. See the Live Streaming API reference, the API overview, and Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Before you configure the event
Prepare media you have permission to stream
Use videos and audio that you own or are authorized to rebroadcast. A successful FFmpeg connection does not establish that you have copyright permission or that the content complies with YouTube’s current policies. Check the applicable rules for your content and territory before scheduling.

Choose how the VPS will send the media
The example below assumes FFmpeg reads local files and sends a single RTMP-style feed to YouTube. This is distinct from YouTube HLS ingestion, which uses HTTPS uploads of media playlists and segments and has its own format requirements. Do not mix HLS segment instructions into the RTMP workflow; consult YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide if you specifically choose HLS.
Size the server for the actual workload
No particular Contabo VPS plan is established as universally sufficient. Resource needs depend on resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, whether FFmpeg must transcode, and the number of simultaneous feeds. Directly copying compatible media may use a different amount of CPU than encoding it. Contabo’s API documentation describes compute management and cloud-init capabilities, not workload-specific FFmpeg benchmarks. Check the resources available to your chosen instance and monitor CPU, memory, disk space, and network behavior during operation.
Schedule the YouTube live event
Option A: YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and choose the scheduling option. Enter the event’s title, description, visibility, and start time.
- Choose or create the YouTube stream that your encoder will use. Copy its stream key and ingest details from YouTube Studio; keep the key secret.
- Make sure the scheduled broadcast is associated with the stream whose key you will give FFmpeg. The event and encoder feed are separate, so creating one does not start the other.
YouTube’s interface labels may change. Confirm the event appears in your upcoming live streams and that the correct stream is associated before relying on the schedule.

Option B: YouTube Live Streaming API
For automated event management, Google’s API supports creating, scheduling, managing, and binding broadcast and stream resources. This is useful when software needs to create recurring events; it requires API authentication and implementation beyond the FFmpeg command itself. Follow the current API overview and resource documentation rather than treating cron as a substitute for event creation.

Build a local file list for FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg on the VPS and place media files in a directory readable by the account that will run the service. Verify the installed build with ffmpeg -version. The online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated for the newest revision, so consult the documentation matching your installed version when options differ: FFmpeg documentation.

file '/srv/youtube/video-01.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube/video-02.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube/video-03.mp4'
Paths must match the actual filenames and be readable by the service account. The concat demuxer expects compatible inputs; if clips differ in codecs, resolution, frame rate, or audio layout, test them and normalize or transcode as needed. A playlist file is only an input list—it does not schedule a YouTube event.
Test an FFmpeg feed before scheduling it
Use an interactive test first so that you can confirm YouTube receives both audio and video. This example loops the concat list and sends a single RTMP feed. Replace every placeholder, including the stream key, with values for your account and installed FFmpeg build:

This is a pattern, not a universal command: the placeholders are not literal FFmpeg values. Choose an encoder and bitrate that fit the intended output and available CPU and network capacity. For a source already encoded in formats YouTube accepts, stream-copying may avoid re-encoding, but only when the input codecs and container are suitable for the ingest path; test the complete feed rather than assuming every file can be copied unchanged.

Do not put a real stream key in a script or repository that others can read. The public VPS example used for this pattern explicitly warns against committing a key. Store it with appropriately restricted permissions, and rotate it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s live preview/status to verify playback, audio, and timing before the event.

To schedule the process rather than start it immediately, use a systemd timer or a scheduler such as cron to start the service at the desired time. That scheduler does not create the YouTube broadcast; schedule the event separately in Studio or through the API. A public Ubuntu VPS example documents systemd supervision and cron/watchdog checks, but it is an implementation example, not an official Google recipe: FFmpeg VPS implementation example.
A restart policy only helps when FFmpeg exits. It cannot guarantee recovery from a VPS outage, network interruption, inaccessible or malformed source files, a YouTube-side failure, or a freeze where the process remains active but the feed has stopped. Monitor the actual output and logs, and arrange an end-to-end check during the scheduled stream.
Allow outbound connectivity and recover carefully
Contabo’s panel firewall and the VPS operating system’s firewall are separate controls. When assigned, the panel firewall blocks incoming traffic by default while leaving outbound traffic unrestricted; an operating-system policy can still block outgoing connections. If your OS firewall denies outbound traffic by default, permit the required YouTube ingest connection and DNS according to your own policy. See Contabo’s firewall guidance and outbound traffic guidance.
If the operating system is accessible but the stream is not behaving, inspect the service and logs before restarting the machine. Contabo advises rebooting from inside the operating system when it remains accessible; a sudden panel-level shutdown or restart should be a last resort because it can cause problems. See Contabo’s reboot guidance.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg connects, but the scheduled event is not receiving the feed | The broadcast may not be bound to the stream whose key FFmpeg uses. | Check the event and stream association in Studio or the API; confirm the correct ingest URL and key. |
| FFmpeg exits as soon as playback starts | Bad playlist path, unreadable media, incompatible concat inputs, or an invalid command option. | Run the command interactively, inspect the first FFmpeg error, verify each file path and permissions, and consult documentation for the installed build. |
| The process appears active, but viewers see a frozen or stale picture | A live process does not prove that useful media is reaching YouTube; source playback or the output feed may have stalled. | Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s live output, then verify the source files and feed end to end. A restart policy alone may not detect this condition. |
| The service repeatedly restarts or cannot connect | Inspect service configuration, DNS, outbound OS firewall rules, network availability, ingest URL, and stream key. | Use systemctl status and journalctl; correct the underlying failure before relying on another restart. |
| The feed stops after a server interruption | A process supervisor cannot remedy every VPS, network, or YouTube-side outage. | Check the VPS and YouTube event state, restore the service when available, and verify the outgoing feed. Do not assume the event schedule restarts playback automatically. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS, FFmpeg process, scheduler, and recovery checks, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video stream running from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- One flat price per slot for the quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
