Choose by calculating the stream’s sustained outgoing traffic, then checking the exact VPS family, region, network capacity, CPU needs, public-IP charges, and current terms. For a stream that only relays an already encoded feed, CPU needs differ from a VPS that also encodes video. Start with what the VPS will do
A VPS can either encode video and send it to YouTube, or relay an already encoded feed. Those are different workloads. Encoding makes sustained CPU availability relevant; relaying still requires a stable connection with enough outgoing capacity. Bandwidth figures alone do not tell you whether a server can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate reliably.
- Encoding on the VPS: account for the encoder’s sustained CPU and memory use as well as network traffic. The provider documentation cited below does not establish that a particular plan can encode a particular stream.
- Relaying an encoded feed: focus on sustained network throughput, connection stability, and outgoing traffic. Compute requirements differ from encoding, but a reliable end-to-end path still needs testing.
Before choosing a provider, set the target resolution, frame rate, codec, and total video-plus-audio bitrate. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing the connection, checking stream health, and using RTMPS. YouTube also transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewers.
Set a bitrate, then estimate monthly traffic
The continuous bitrate determines the stream’s approximate outgoing volume. YouTube’s current encoder guidance gives these recommended ranges:

These are YouTube’s published recommended ranges, not provider performance guarantees. YouTube specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
For a rough traffic estimate, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB in decimal units before overhead. At 10 Mbps continuous video, that is about 3.24 TB over 30 days before overhead. These are calculations using 30 days, not provider-published quotas. Use the actual total bitrate, including audio, and allow extra for protocol overhead, reconnects, and other outgoing traffic.

What Contabo and Hetzner document
The provider terms below describe traffic policies and service characteristics; they do not prove how either service performs on a particular continuous stream. Check the exact plan and region when buying, since allowances, configurations, and prices can change.

How to choose for your channel
- Decide whether the server encodes or relays. Do not size CPU from bandwidth alone.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec. Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as a starting point, then test the actual encoder settings.
- Estimate outgoing traffic. Calculate from the total bitrate and continuous duration, with margin for overhead and reconnects.
- Check the exact plan and region. Compare monthly allowance, fair-use or overage terms, port capacity, and how outgoing traffic is counted. Hetzner’s EU figures do not apply automatically to other locations or all server families.
- Calculate full cost. Include any public IP, taxes, backups, and dedicated CPU you need. Confirm current prices and configuration at checkout; the cited material does not establish a current like-for-like total price comparison.
- Run a sustained trial using your actual setup. Send the intended content to YouTube from the intended region. Log stream health, disconnects, CPU, memory, throughput, and restart or reconnect behavior. No cited head-to-head 24/7 stream test establishes a performance winner.
- Prepare recovery. Keep local copies of stream assets, monitor the ingest, and plan how to restart or reconnect after a failure. An infrastructure availability term does not guarantee end-to-end YouTube availability.
Which is better: Contabo or Hetzner?
For an EU Hetzner CX, CPX, or CAX Cloud Server, the documented 20 TB/month outgoing allowance appears ample on paper for one ordinary-bitrate stream—for example, the rough 3.24 TB monthly estimate for 10 Mbps of continuous video before overhead. That arithmetic does not settle fair-use terms, port stability, region-specific network behavior, or the performance of a particular instance.

Contabo’s no-default-limit statement may look simpler, but it is expressly qualified by fair use and possible throttling. Hetzner publishes family- and region-dependent allowances and an availability effort with exclusions and Cloud Credits as the stated remedy. Neither policy determines which provider will deliver a more reliable stream for your configuration. Compare the exact plan, then test it from the region and with the workload you intend to use.
