You can schedule the event in YouTube Studio, but scheduling alone does not make a video file play. To have prerecorded video appear automatically, schedule the YouTube broadcast and configure an encoder or cloud service to send that video as the stream’s feed at the right time. YouTube provides the event page, stream key, and ingest details; the encoder handles playback and any looping.
What scheduling does—and what it does not
A YouTube Live event and its incoming audiovisual feed are separate pieces. Scheduling creates an upcoming broadcast page that you can share, and viewers can ask YouTube to remind them. An encoder sends the actual video and audio to YouTube. YouTube’s scheduling guide does not describe a built-in control that automatically plays a local video file, so you need to arrange playback in the encoder or streaming service you choose. Schedule the YouTube event

In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, open Manage, then choose Schedule stream.

Choose whether to reuse settings from a previous event or create a new event. Set the title, description, visibility, date, and start time, then save. The scheduled event gives you an upcoming watch page to share.

In the stream setup, locate the YouTube server URL and stream key. You will enter both in the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before the next broadcast. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Configure the video feed in your encoder
The YouTube event will not select or start your video file for you. Configure the encoder to use the intended prerecorded video as its outgoing feed, and set any playlist, looping, or timed-start behavior there. The controls differ by encoder, so check that encoder’s current instructions for the exact media-source and automation steps. The general YouTube scheduling instructions do not specify app-specific autoplay setup.
Choose a playback method

Software encoder: YouTube lists OBS among software encoder options. This can suit a creator who already has a suitable computer and wants to manage playback and the broadcast locally. You must make sure the encoder is configured to play the chosen media and remains running throughout the stream.

Hardware encoder: YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. Consider one when the production setup calls for dedicated equipment, but verify that the particular model supports the file playback and automation you need.

Cloud service: A cloud service can handle prerecorded playback without relying on a computer at home. Confirm that the service supports YouTube and the playback pattern you need before scheduling.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started; the right choice depends on production complexity, reliability needs, and whether your chosen encoder can automate file playback. Its encoder overview lists software and hardware options: YouTube encoder guidance.
Check stream settings and test before the event
Match the encoder’s output to the video and your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. HLS is an alternative for supported codecs or HDR workflows, but it has higher latency than RTMP and protocol-specific constraints. Use HLS only when your encoder and production requirements call for it. Review YouTube’s live encoder settings for current protocol, codec, and other ingest recommendations.

Keyframes: YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.

Bandwidth: Test the chosen resolution and bitrate on the actual connection. Leave enough upload capacity for a stable stream rather than setting quality above what the connection can sustain.

Playback: Test the exact video or playlist, audio levels, start behavior, and looping behavior before the scheduled broadcast. Confirm the encoder is sending the right feed, not merely connected.

Stream key: Enter the key and server URL in the encoder’s streaming settings, and confirm they correspond to the scheduled event’s setup.
Start and monitor the scheduled broadcast

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will start successfully.

Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Inspect the preview for the correct video, picture, and sound before selecting Go live when that action is presented.

Monitor audio and video quality during the event. If the feed stops or degrades, check the encoder, connection, and ingest settings rather than assuming the scheduled event itself will restart playback.

When finished, end the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours.

Common problems and fixes

The event is scheduled, but no video plays: Scheduling creates the YouTube event; it does not configure file playback. Set the video as the encoder’s outgoing feed and test its start behavior.

The encoder connects, but the wrong content appears: Check the selected media source or playlist, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.

The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the server URL and stream key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key.

Video or audio is unstable: Test at a lower output quality that fits the available upload bandwidth, verify the encoder settings, and monitor the preview and live feed.

The stream ends unexpectedly: Check whether the encoder or computer stopped sending. A scheduled event is not itself a playback system; reliable automation must be provided by the encoder or service.
