How to Schedule a Prerecorded Video to Go Live on YouTube

A cloud prerecorded-livestream service can start a YouTube video at its scheduled time without an operator launching an encoder. Here are the setup steps and trade-offs.

To have a prerecorded video start on YouTube at a set time without an operator launching an encoder, schedule it through a cloud service that explicitly supports prerecorded livestreams. For example, Restream’s documented workflow lets you choose or upload a video, enter the event details and schedule, select YouTube, and create the event; Restream says the video airs automatically at the scheduled time. A scheduled YouTube event on its own is not a video file delivery system: YouTube’s native route requires an incoming encoder feed and a person to confirm the preview and click Go live.

What you need before scheduling

  • A YouTube channel eligible for livestreaming. Restream’s help page says first-time YouTube live streaming requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait; check YouTube’s current eligibility and instructions before relying on that timing.
  • A cloud service feature specifically for prerecorded livestreams, plus a video file that meets its current upload and storage limits.
  • YouTube connected to the service. Restream documents connecting by authorizing your YouTube account.
  • The final title, description, thumbnail, event time, and timezone. Confirm the timezone displayed in the service rather than assuming how it interprets the schedule.

Review the uploaded file before scheduling: check that its opening and ending are right, audio is audible, aspect ratio is correct, and the thumbnail and public event details are accurate. Service limits, storage allowances, plan requirements, and branding can change; verify the current terms in the service interface.

Schedule a prerecorded livestream in a cloud service

  1. Connect the YouTube channel. In the cloud service, authorize the YouTube account you want to broadcast to and confirm that the intended channel is selected.
  2. Create a prerecorded event. In Restream, choose Pre-recorded livestream, select an existing video or upload one, then continue to the event details.
  3. Enter the event information. Add the title and description, then choose the date and time. Check the displayed timezone and compare it with the time you intend viewers to see.
  4. Set up promotion if you want it. Restream’s workflow supports an optional advance event post and thumbnail. YouTube is among the platforms Restream identifies as supporting advance event posts.
  5. Select YouTube and create the event. Before confirming, check the destination, video, title, description, and start time. Restream says scheduled events can be added to a calendar; use the resulting event link in your own promotion plan.
  6. Monitor the event. Restream says its prerecorded events start automatically at the scheduled time, even if the account owner is offline. Its stream view can be used to monitor the event and chat while it plays.
  7. Clean up if plans change. If you unschedule an event, Restream says associated social posts are not removed automatically. Review the YouTube event post separately and remove or correct it if it is no longer valid.

Restream documents looping a video up to 10 times; that is a Restream feature limit, not a general YouTube livestream limit, and current availability or plan terms should be checked in its help center.

How the scheduled event and video feed fit together

YouTube’s API model treats a broadcast and a stream as separate objects: the broadcast is the event and video page, while the stream is the incoming audio-video feed. A broadcast binds to one stream, and a stream can be reused for multiple broadcasts at different times. This distinction explains why creating a scheduled YouTube watch page does not, by itself, make an uploaded file play at the scheduled time. For unattended playback, choose a service whose documentation expressly covers prerecorded event playback.

Use YouTube’s native scheduled-stream route when you want encoder control

The native route is useful when you want to supply the feed yourself, including a prerecorded file played through an encoder. It is not a hands-off scheduled file upload: YouTube’s instructions include starting the encoder and clicking Go live after checking the preview.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings, then enter its details.
  2. At the event time, configure an encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
  3. Set the encoder’s source to the prerecorded file and start the feed. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  4. Confirm the preview, then click Go live.
  5. When playback is finished, stop the encoder feed and end the stream in the control room.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Recheck the current Studio interface and YouTube Help instructions, since labels and workflows can change.

Test quality and connection before the event

YouTube recommends testing encoder settings with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for ordinary content because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Choose resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and other encoder settings for the actual source and workflow; there is no single setting that is correct for every video or connection.

For a hosted file, inspect the uploaded version and event listing before the start time. For an encoder feed, test the full path—including the file source, audio, connection, and preview—before the scheduled event. A scheduled start is only useful if the file and destination are ready.
