You can run vMix on AWS EC2, but the decisive requirement is a GPU-backed Windows display that vMix can access—not simply a powerful virtual machine. Plan for a graphics-capable EC2 instance, the appropriate NVIDIA Grid driver, a non-RDP way to operate the desktop, and a full rehearsal under your actual production workload. vMix’s EC2 guidance dates to April 16, 2020, so verify current AWS instance, Windows image, driver, and vMix compatibility before committing to a production setup.
What you need to know before choosing an EC2 instance
vMix’s EC2 overview says the instance needs directly attached graphics with virtual-display support and identifies G4 or higher instances as supporting that technology. It also calls for NVIDIA Grid drivers, warning that normal NVIDIA drivers will not work. Because that guidance was last updated on April 16, 2020, treat those family and driver details as a starting point, not confirmation of today’s AWS catalog or compatibility. Check current AWS documentation and vMix requirements for the specific region, Windows image, and instance you intend to use.
The same vMix guide names Windows Server 2019 x64 and at least four allocated CPU cores as its baseline. That is a dated vendor baseline, not a performance guarantee or a sizing recommendation for a particular show. The guide cautions that cloud services may be shared and performance is not guaranteed, and advises testing thoroughly before production. Your required capacity depends on the number and type of sources, resolution and frame rate, graphics, recording, and streaming outputs.
Set up vMix on EC2
- Define the production workload. Write down the sources you will mix, target resolution and frame rate, whether you will record, the number of output streams, and where the operator will connect from. The cited guidance does not establish an EC2 size for any particular workload.
- Select a Windows instance with virtual-display graphics. Confirm that the current EC2 instance family provides the directly attached graphics and virtual-display support vMix requires. Verify the available Windows image and vMix compatibility for your chosen region before launch; do not assume the 2020 G4-or-higher note guarantees current availability or suitability.
- Install the EC2-specific NVIDIA Grid driver. Use the driver path AWS currently documents for the selected instance. vMix’s guidance says Grid drivers are necessary and ordinary NVIDIA drivers will not work. Confirm the driver matches the instance and Windows image rather than relying on generic GPU-driver instructions.
- Make the GPU-backed display the active Windows display. Set the graphics-connected display as primary. Disable additional displays attached to a Microsoft Basic Adapter or similar virtual adapter if they interfere with the graphics-backed display.
- Check that vMix can access graphics. Open vMix and add an MP4 input. If playback is blank, vMix’s EC2 guide identifies that as a sign it cannot access the graphics card; revisit the driver and active-display setup before proceeding.
- Choose remote desktop control without RDP. vMix recommends avoiding Remote Desktop Protocol for operating the application. Its guide suggests direct screen-capture tools such as VNC, TeamViewer, or AnyDesk, or a cloud desktop login solution such as Teradici, which may involve additional license cost. Confirm the option’s current compatibility, licensing, security, and performance for your environment.
- Configure streaming for the destination. vMix’s current streaming help recommends FFMPEG for most situations and lists H.264, AV1, or HEVC video with AAC audio. Select a format and settings accepted by the receiving provider; the provider’s ingest requirements and your vMix output workload determine the final configuration.
- Rehearse the complete production. Test the actual sources, graphics, recording, stream destinations, remote-control method, and network path together. A successful MP4 playback check alone does not demonstrate that the instance can sustain the complete production load.
vMix on EC2 is not AWS’s managed live-streaming architecture
Running vMix on EC2 means you operate the Windows production environment and use vMix to mix sources. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution is a different managed pipeline: it uses MediaLive for ingest and transcoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery. The AWS guide describes redundant source feeds and adaptive-bitrate output in that architecture; it is not a guide to installing vMix on EC2.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For the managed solution, AWS notes that MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect availability depends on supported regions. Its implementation guide advises stopping resources created by that solution after an event to help avoid unnecessary charges. That advice is specific to the managed solution; it should not be treated as EC2 vMix billing guidance. Current EC2 costs and region availability are not established here, so check AWS’s current pricing and regional service information for your deployment rather than relying on old forum-era hourly figures.
Common problems and what to check
- vMix opens, but MP4 playback is blank: Check whether the NVIDIA Grid driver is installed and whether the graphics-connected display is the active primary display. Disable conflicting Microsoft Basic Adapter or similar displays, then test again.
- The instance has an NVIDIA GPU, but vMix cannot use it: A GPU by itself does not establish the required directly attached virtual-display support. Reconfirm the instance’s current graphics capabilities and use the EC2-specific Grid driver rather than a normal NVIDIA driver.
- Operation is unreliable through Remote Desktop: vMix advises against RDP. Test a direct screen-capture or cloud desktop login option instead, including its behavior during a representative production workload.
- The stream will not connect or the output is rejected: Check the destination provider’s current ingest requirements and confirm the selected codec and audio format are accepted. vMix lists H.264, AV1, or HEVC with AAC audio as options; that does not mean every destination accepts each combination.
- A setup works in a basic test but fails during a show: Repeat the rehearsal with all planned sources, graphics, recordings, and outputs active. vMix explicitly warns that cloud performance is not guaranteed, and the cited documentation does not promise a particular EC2 configuration will meet a given workload.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock rather than mix a live production in vMix, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not take a live camera feed. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
