How to Run FFmpeg as a 24/7 YouTube Stream on Windows with Task Scheduler

A practical guide to sending media from FFmpeg to YouTube Live and launching it with Windows Task Scheduler—with key settings, testing steps, and the limits of a 24/7 stream.

You can use FFmpeg to send a video or other media input to YouTube Live and use Windows Task Scheduler to launch FFmpeg automatically. The key limitation is that scheduling a process does not guarantee one uninterrupted 24/7 YouTube event: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not establish how a longer-running stream or its archive will behave. This guide shows how to prepare and test the FFmpeg command, explains what the available guidance does—and does not—establish about Task Scheduler, and covers a cloud alternative.

What you need before scheduling FFmpeg

  • A Windows computer that can stay powered on and connected to the internet while it streams.
  • FFmpeg installed, with a build that supports the RTMP or RTMPS protocol you intend to use.
  • A YouTube Live encoder stream, plus its current server URL and stream key.
  • An input source, such as a video file, and reliable upload capacity sufficient for the selected stream settings.

A scheduled task can start FFmpeg, but it cannot make a powered-off computer, interrupted connection, or unavailable YouTube event continue streaming. Treat the PC, the FFmpeg process, and the YouTube live event as separate parts of the setup.

Prepare the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select an encoder stream, then copy the current server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s stream setup guidance is at YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends it for Live; see YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder.
  4. Keep the key private. YouTube says stream keys are like a stream’s password and address. Do not publish a real key in a script, screenshot, or support post. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room.

Use the exact current URL and key YouTube displays rather than assuming an ingest address. If your installed FFmpeg build cannot connect to that RTMPS endpoint, confirm protocol support in the build and check the URL and key before changing other settings.

Build and test the FFmpeg command

Start with the documented command shape

FFmpeg places global options first, input options before the input, and output options before the output URL. Its protocol documentation gives this real-time file-to-RTMP example:

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream

For YouTube, replace the example input and destination with your actual source and the current URL plus stream key from Live Control Room. This is a command shape to adapt, not a verified, ready-to-run YouTube command; do not paste a real key into a public example or shared script. FFmpeg’s documented options and protocol example are in its command-line documentation and protocol documentation.

The -re option reads a file at its native frame rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. It is useful for real-time delivery of a file; it is not a guarantee of continuous operation or recovery after an error.

Make a background run noninteractive

Include -nostdin in the FFmpeg invocation so its normal console-input checks do not interfere with background operation. FFmpeg’s FAQ specifically recommends this for background tasks; redirecting standard input to NUL on Windows is documented as an alternative. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Choose encoder settings for the source and connection

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options; supports frame rates up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. Audio can use AAC or MP3. Check YouTube’s current encoder stream settings before choosing options, since supported settings and ingest guidance may change.

For H.264, YouTube lists these bitrate figures. They are published guidance, not a promise that a particular encoder or internet connection can sustain them:

Output YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps, H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose a setting your upload connection can sustain reliably, then test the actual motion and audio in your planned program. The listed H.264 figures are from YouTube Help; the retrieved guidance does not state a publication year.

Run a live test before relying on automation

  1. Run the command manually first, using the real source and private stream credentials.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Listen for audio problems and watch for dropped or unstable video.
  3. Use motion and sound similar to the material you intend to stream; a static or silent test may not reveal problems in the real program.
  4. Confirm the stream can be opened from your channel and watch page. YouTube’s computer tips for live streaming recommend setting up early and checking accessibility.

Use Task Scheduler without assuming unverified settings

Task Scheduler is the Windows mechanism you intend to use to start the FFmpeg process, but the available official guidance here does not establish a current click-by-click configuration for task triggers, logon conditions, credentials, power settings, retries, or multiple-instance behavior. Those choices can vary with Windows version and with whether you need the stream to start after reboot, run after logoff, or recover after a crash. Do not treat any one combination as a verified universal recipe.

A cautious implementation is to keep the tested FFmpeg invocation in a stable local command or script file, then configure a scheduled task to launch that file under the Windows account and conditions appropriate to your machine. This is an operational suggestion, not a Microsoft-verified configuration in the cited guidance. Consult current Microsoft documentation for your Windows version before deciding how the task runs, how credentials are handled, and what happens after failure.

Before depending on the task, test the specific lifecycle you care about—such as starting after a reboot or running when you are not interactively using the PC—and verify that YouTube receives the feed. A successful manual run proves neither the task’s permissions nor its behavior after a restart.

Understand what “24/7” means for YouTube archives

A task that keeps an FFmpeg process running and a YouTube live event’s lifecycle are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that statement does not guarantee that a 24/7 encoder corresponds to one uninterrupted event or one archive, nor that an archive will be retained indefinitely. Plan to monitor the live event and verify the resulting archive behavior in your own channel rather than assuming the scheduler controls either.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg cannot connect: Recheck the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm you selected the current RTMPS URL, and verify that your FFmpeg build supports the chosen protocol.
  • The background task starts but FFmpeg waits or exits unexpectedly: Use -nostdin to prevent interactive input checks from blocking a background run. FFmpeg also documents redirecting standard input to NUL on Windows.
  • The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Lower the output bitrate or choose a more conservative resolution or frame rate that your upload can sustain. Re-test the actual audio and motion and monitor stream health.
  • The scheduled run fails although a manual run works: Check the task’s account, execution conditions, and access to the script, input file, and credentials. These are Windows-specific configuration points; the cited sources do not establish a single correct setting for every version and use case.
  • The stream stops after an error or connection drop: A scheduled launch alone is not evidence of automatic recovery. Verify the behavior of your task and process on the Windows version you use, and check Live Control Room after a failure.
  • The archive is shorter or different from what you expected: The under-12-hour automatic archive statement is not a guarantee for a continuous 24/7 event. Check YouTube’s event and archive behavior for your stream rather than inferring it from the task’s runtime.
