You can keep church sermon videos running as a YouTube Live stream by sending a rights-cleared video file or playlist from an encoder on an Amazon Lightsail Linux VPS to a stream created in YouTube Studio. YouTube supplies the server URL and stream key; the VPS keeps the encoder running without relying on a church computer or home internet connection. The setup requires channel eligibility, secure key handling, a tested encoder configuration, and a plan for transfer costs and interruptions.
What this setup does—and what it does not do
The video file stays on the VPS, where encoder software reads it and sends a continuous live feed to YouTube over RTMPS or RTMP. Viewers watch through YouTube; the VPS is the source of the live feed, not the audience-facing video host.
Decide whether the channel should repeat one sermon, rotate a library, or follow a scheduled sequence. A single-file loop is simpler to manage; a playlist or schedule gives viewers variety but adds media organization and testing work. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to connect an encoder, but does not prescribe a particular FFmpeg command, playlist tool, Lightsail size, or service manager. Those are implementation choices that must be tested with your files and server.
Before you start: channel access, video rights, and files
Enable live streaming early
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days; the current eligibility guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until deployment day. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Confirm rights for every part of the program
The church is responsible for rights to the live content and any archived version, including music licenses. A sermon recording can contain music in an opening, closing, background, or congregational singing as well as the spoken message. YouTube’s live-stream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Review the YouTube Terms of Service and resolve permissions before streaming.
Prepare and preserve your source media
- Make an inventory of the sermon files and choose a repeat, rotation, or schedule.
- Check that the church has rights for the video and all audio in the chosen program.
- Keep an independent copy of every original recording. A live stream is not a substitute for a reliable archive.
- Check the file sizes against the storage available on the VPS and allow room for logs and operating-system needs.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select a stream for the sermon channel.
- Choose the encoder connection option and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Enter those values in the VPS encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script repository, paste it into screenshots, or include it in a support post.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before announcing the continuous feed. Verify the preview, picture, audio, and stream health in YouTube Studio.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide documents the connection workflow and notes that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete video.
Choose a Lightsail instance and network plan
A Lightsail instance must have enough compute, memory, disk space, and network capacity for the actual encoding method and media library. There is no universally suitable bundle established for this use. Directly relaying a prepared file and CPU-encoding or transcoding video have different resource demands; test your chosen workflow instead of assuming a small instance will handle it.

AWS’s Lightsail documentation accessed in 2026 lists a Linux/Unix Nano public IPv4 bundle as an example at $5 per month, with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB of monthly transfer. This is a documented example, not a recommendation or assurance that it can run your encoder. Bundle availability, pricing, and transfer allowances depend on region and plan generation; check the current Lightsail bundle details before choosing.
Lightsail counts inbound and outbound data toward the plan’s transfer allowance. If the allowance is exceeded, qualifying outbound traffic can incur region-dependent charges. Estimate the stream’s encoder upload before deployment, then compare it with the current allowance and overage pricing in the relevant region. See AWS’s Lightsail data transfer documentation.

Monthly upload in GB ≈ bitrate in megabits/second × active seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000
At an illustrative constant 5 Mbps for 30 days, the encoder sends about 1,620 GB before overhead; at 10 Mbps for the same uptime, about 3,240 GB. These are arithmetic estimates, not AWS usage guarantees. The stream bitrate is a major cost driver, and actual transfer can vary with the feed and operating pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNetwork access and stable addressing
The encoder sends the live stream outbound from Lightsail, so the VPS firewall needs the required outbound access. Restrict inbound firewall access to what administrators need. AWS says an attached Lightsail static IP has no charge; it can provide a stable public address if one is needed after a stop/start. Review Lightsail firewall and network guidance.

Set encoder quality and verify the feed
Start with a resolution supported by the original sermon files and an encoder configuration that remains stable. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest; it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported encoder codecs, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation, not exceeding four seconds. H.264 is a straightforward compatibility baseline when the workflow supports it.
| H.264 output example | Minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 360p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are video bitrates from YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance; configure audio separately according to your encoder and YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube transcodes incoming live feeds into multiple playback formats, so the source bitrate you send is not the same as every viewer’s playback bitrate. It is, however, central to the VPS’s outbound transfer use.
- Match output resolution and frame rate to the source and the intended viewing quality; do not upscale a low-resolution recording without a reason.
- Use an ingest protocol and codec combination supported by the encoder and YouTube. Prefer RTMPS where available.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as the starting point for the selected H.264 resolution and frame rate.
- Send a test feed and inspect YouTube’s stream health, image, and audio before switching to the ongoing program.
Keep the encoder running and recover safely
Install and configure the encoder on the Linux instance, make the media files accessible to it, and arrange for the encoder process to restart or be supervised using an approach appropriate to your operating system. The exact commands depend on the encoder, file format, playlist method, and Linux distribution; do not copy a generic command without checking its input, output, key-handling, and restart behavior.

Monitor the encoder process, disk space, Lightsail transfer consumption, and YouTube stream health. Decide in advance what viewers should see if the encoder or the instance stops, and who will respond to an alert. A VPS can remove dependence on a church’s local computer and internet connection, but it does not establish uninterrupted uptime. Preserve source recordings separately, particularly because YouTube only documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not allow the channel to go live: check verification, prior restrictions, age eligibility, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Enable streaming well before the planned launch.
- YouTube receives no signal: confirm that the encoder is running, the correct stream is selected, and its server URL and key match the values in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder securely.
- Stream health reports instability: inspect VPS CPU and memory use, the encoder’s output, and available network capacity. Test a lower output bitrate or resolution if the source and audience needs allow; check that the instance can sustain the selected encoding method.
- Transfer use or cost is higher than expected: recalculate from actual bitrate and active hours, include all inbound and outbound usage in the plan allowance check, and review current regional overage terms.
- The live video is claimed, blocked, or interrupted over music: revisit permissions for the entire recording and any included music. A church service or sermon recording is not automatically exempt from licensing obligations.
- The full continuous program is not available afterward: do not rely on an archive for a feed longer than 12 hours. Retain the source and publish individual sermon recordings separately if an on-demand library is needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than maintaining a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists on YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at the church; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
