How to Run an Always-On YouTube Gaming Stream on Linux

A practical Linux guide to an always-on YouTube gaming stream: configure OBS and RTMPS, test YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle, and monitor recovery without assuming uninterrupted uptime.

You can run a YouTube gaming stream from Linux with OBS, but keeping it “always on” takes more than leaving the encoder open. You need a valid YouTube ingest URL and stream key, an encoder profile your gaming host can sustain, a plan for restarting after failures, and checks for YouTube’s broadcast state and stream health. None of those steps guarantees uninterrupted viewing; test the complete setup on your channel before relying on it unattended.

What “always-on” means for a Linux gaming stream

There are two separate things to keep running: the encoder process on your Linux host and the public broadcast on YouTube. OBS can be running while YouTube has not started the broadcast, and restarting OBS does not by itself prove that viewers can see a healthy live stream. Treat the setup as a small operations system: the host starts and recovers the encoder, YouTube is configured to handle the broadcast lifecycle you want, and you monitor both sides.

  • Encoder: OBS captures the game and scenes, encodes video and audio, and sends the feed to YouTube.
  • Broadcast: YouTube receives that feed and transitions the selected broadcast through its own lifecycle.
  • Recovery: Your process supervisor, host, network, and broadcast settings determine what happens after a crash or disconnect.

The right details depend on your Linux distribution, GPU and encoder, game, capture path, resolution, frame rate, and network. YouTube’s guidance establishes ingest and encoding settings, not a universal Linux service configuration or uptime guarantee.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Confirm live streaming is available for your channel. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Account requirements can change, so check the current instructions in YouTube itself. OBS’s YouTube guide also describes channel verification and broadcast setup, but it is a community resource rather than the final authority on current account rules: OBS YouTube streaming guide.
  2. Get the current ingest URL and key. In Live Control Room, retrieve the RTMPS URL and stream key for the stream. YouTube’s setup instructions explain entering these credentials in an encoder: YouTube encoder setup.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in screenshots, public scripts, issue reports, or source control. If exposed, replace or reset it using YouTube’s current controls.
  4. Decide how the broadcast should start and stop. YouTube’s stream setup and OBS’s guide distinguish encoder output from broadcast actions. Scheduled streams may use auto-start and auto-stop, but available controls and behavior can vary by configuration and OBS version. Verify the current settings in Live Control Room and your installed OBS, then test what happens when the encoder connects and disconnects.

Configure OBS for YouTube’s current encoder guidance

In OBS, select the YouTube service or preset when available. If you enter connection details manually, use the RTMPS URL and key copied from Live Control Room; do not substitute a guessed endpoint. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through TLS/SSL and specifies a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint over port 443: Google RTMPS ingestion documentation.

Choose settings based on the output you intend to deliver and what the gaming machine can encode while running the game. YouTube’s current encoder page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations are resolution-specific: use the table for your chosen output instead of treating one bitrate as right for every stream. These are YouTube’s published recommendations checked in 2026, not a guarantee that a particular host or internet connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Start with an output the host can encode consistently while the game is running. Higher detail and motion require more encoding and upload capacity.
  • Bitrate: Use the value range YouTube publishes for your selected resolution and output mode. Check the host’s real upload capacity and leave room for network variation.
  • Rate control: Set CBR as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Codec: Choose among the codecs YouTube lists that your OBS build and hardware support. Do not assume every Linux installation or encoder offers all of them.
  • Ingest protocol: RTMPS is the sensible default for an ordinary YouTube stream. YouTube also documents HLS for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP(S); it has different setup and latency properties, so do not switch without a content-specific reason.

Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended

  1. Set the broadcast to private or unlisted if that fits your workflow, then connect OBS and check YouTube’s preview.
  2. Inspect stream health and any configuration warnings in YouTube. The LiveStreams API exposes stream states such as active, created, error, inactive, and ready, along with health information and configuration issues: YouTube LiveStreams API reference.
  3. Change one relevant encoder setting at a time and check whether the platform’s reported issues clear. A local “streaming” indicator is not enough; confirm that YouTube receives and presents the feed.
  4. Test the intended lifecycle: stop and restart the encoder, interrupt the network if practical, and observe whether the scheduled broadcast starts, remains open, or requires a manual action. The OBS guide covers auto-start and auto-stop, but its controls and behavior should be verified in the version you actually run: OBS YouTube streaming guide.

Keep OBS running after reboot or a process failure

For unattended use, configure your chosen Linux service manager to start the encoder after boot and recover it after a process failure. The exact method depends on the distribution, OBS packaging, desktop session, capture devices, and whether the game runs on the same machine or is captured from another one. Do not copy a generic systemd unit and assume it will work: a graphical OBS session, GPU access, audio devices, and display capture may require setup specific to your host.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Store credentials so they are accessible only to the account and process that need them; never expose the key in a world-readable unit file or logs.
  • Keep logs and check them after a restart to distinguish an encoder crash from an authentication, network, or capture problem.
  • Monitor both the local process and YouTube’s ingest/health status. A service manager can restart a process, but cannot guarantee network recovery, valid credentials, a working capture source, or a live public broadcast.
  • Consider host power, network resilience, and a recovery route if the machine is remote. A reboot policy is not a substitute for checking the broadcast after a failure.

A headless encoder may suit a generated or pre-rendered feed, while OBS is useful when you need its visual scene workflow, overlays, and scene switching. The sources here do not validate a particular FFmpeg command or Linux service file, so choose and test those components for your own source and distribution rather than treating them as official YouTube requirements.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
OBS cannot connect or reports an SSL error Confirm you copied the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, selected RTMPS rather than an incorrect protocol, and are using the documented port 443. Check that the stream key belongs to the selected broadcast.
YouTube receives the feed but reports poor health or configuration issues Read the health details in YouTube, then compare OBS output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, rate control, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Reduce the output if the host or upload connection cannot sustain it.
OBS is running, but viewers do not see the broadcast Check Live Control Room’s broadcast state and the scheduled stream’s auto-start/auto-stop configuration. Encoder output and public broadcast state are distinct; a manual action may be required in some setups.
The stream stops after reboot or a crash Check whether the service manager starts the correct OBS session, whether the process can access the display, GPU, audio and capture devices, and whether credentials remain available. Confirm afterward that YouTube sees healthy ingest.
The feed reconnects but the broadcast closes or stays in the wrong state Test the interaction between encoder disconnects and the channel’s scheduled broadcast settings. Adjust the lifecycle controls in the current OBS and YouTube interfaces, then repeat the test rather than assuming reconnection will restore the public stream.

Choose a local setup or cloud playback

Running the game and encoder on one Linux host avoids a separate capture path, but encoding can compete with gameplay for hardware, power, and network capacity. A separate streaming host can isolate some load but adds capture and operational complexity. The better choice depends on your hardware and how the game reaches OBS; neither is universally best.
