You can run a YouTube gaming ambience stream from prerecorded footage by sending a licensed video file through a streaming encoder such as OBS, using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For a stream intended to stay on around the clock, plan for interruptions and archive limits: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed 24/7 archive or uninterrupted operation. Monetization is also not assured; game-publisher permissions and YouTube’s channel-wide content policies both apply.
What you need before going live
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Confirm current eligibility in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A prerecorded gameplay or ambience file that you have the right to broadcast, including its game visuals, soundtrack, other audio, overlays, and any third-party material.
- An encoder, such as OBS, to send the video feed to YouTube. OBS is identified as an HLS-capable encoder in YouTube’s documentation; that does not guarantee that a particular looping configuration will work without testing.
- A computer capable of running the encoder and a dependable internet connection. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required, but its cited guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification.
A 24/7 stream is not the same thing as a video that YouTube plays continuously from your channel. The encoder sends a live feed; your chosen setup must keep that feed supplied and recover from interruptions. YouTube’s guidance does not promise indefinite looping or round-the-clock uptime for a particular computer, connection, or encoder.
Check rights before preparing the stream
Get permission for the game and its audio
Game footage is not automatically cleared for commercial use. Check the specific publisher’s policy for broadcasting and monetizing gameplay, and keep a copy of any applicable permission. YouTube warns that simply showing gameplay for extended periods may not be accepted for monetization. Its video game and software content guidance says: “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.”
You are also responsible for having the necessary rights to stream all content, including music, under YouTube’s livestream terms. A game’s permission may not cover a separately licensed song, background track, ambient recording, or overlay. Clear each element separately where needed; a track being available in a game does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast or monetize it.

Make the creative contribution clear
YouTube’s monetization policies distinguish reused content from “inauthentic content,” its term for repetitive or mass-produced material. A July 15, 2025 policy notice clarified the latter terminology; both policies are assessed at the channel level. Repeatedly replaying the same footage with little change can raise questions, but that does not establish that every loop will be rejected or that any particular channel will pass review. Original selection, editing, context, or other meaningful value can help viewers understand what you contributed, but it does not guarantee monetization. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Set up and test the prerecorded stream
- Check eligibility and create the live event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Verify that the channel is eligible and has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. For the current flow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Prepare the video file. Use footage and audio whose rights you have checked. Watch the file through to confirm its picture, sound, and ending behave as intended. If the footage loops, consider whether the transition is distracting and whether the stream offers clear original value rather than just repeating material.
- Connect your encoder. In the event’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not show it on screen or share it; reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers configurable settings such as latency, DVR, scheduled-stream visibility, and auto-start or auto-stop.
- Choose the ingestion protocol deliberately. Use the protocol supported by your encoder and required by your workflow. YouTube identifies OBS as an HLS-capable encoder. HLS has specific segment requirements and higher latency than RTMP; use it when you need a documented capability such as HDR or a codec unsupported by RTMP, and follow YouTube’s HLS setup requirements rather than assuming encoder defaults are sufficient.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Check video, audio levels, playback on the public-facing watch page, and playback on a mobile device. Confirm that any local recording or archive you need is actually being created. Fix problems before switching the event to public.
- Go public and monitor it. After the test, start the public stream and keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube’s stream status. YouTube recommends checking setup and stream health in its live streaming tips. Do not assume that a successful preview proves a long-running feed will remain connected.
Choose between one long stream and shorter sessions
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish automatic archiving for a 24/7 stream, nor does it promise that a long stream will be retained as a replay. If having an archive matters, schedule sessions under 12 hours and check current Studio behavior before relying on the recording.
