You can run a YouTube radio-style stream from a spare PC with OBS Studio: create a scene containing a suitable still image and your audio source, then connect OBS to a broadcast in YouTube Studio using the stream URL and key. The PC does the encoding, so its performance and internet upload capacity need to hold up during a test before you rely on it for a long broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s current help guidance accessed 2026-10-03.
- A spare PC capable of encoding your chosen video and audio settings. OBS cautions that a compatible system does not guarantee it can stream or record successfully; workload depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.
- OBS Studio, available at no charge as open-source software.
- Audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, a suitable visual such as a station image, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected bitrate.
A static radio image still counts as video: configure a visual source rather than expecting an audio-only feed to create the broadcast.
Set up the stream in OBS and YouTube Studio
- Check live access. Sign in to the channel and confirm live streaming is enabled before planning a launch time. If this is the channel’s first activation, allow for YouTube’s stated processing time of up to 24 hours.
- Install OBS and run its setup wizard. Open OBS Studio and use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration based on your computer and intended stream. Treat its result as a starting point, not proof the PC can sustain a 24/7 broadcast. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers the initial setup workflow.
- Create a scene with a visual. In OBS, add an Image source for a station logo, program artwork or another visual you have rights to use. Keep the scene simple; elaborate motion and extra effects consume resources without necessarily helping a radio-style stream.
- Add and verify program audio. Add the appropriate audio input or playback source for the way you are playing your program. Play representative audio and check the OBS Audio Mixer meters. If the expected signal is absent, open the source’s properties and select the correct device manually. Listen for clipping, silence and unwanted desktop sounds before proceeding.
- Create or schedule a YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Connect OBS using the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube, or use YouTube’s integration if OBS offers it for your setup. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Choose encoder settings the PC and connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and selecting a reliable quality level rather than aiming for the highest setting. Its current H.264 table gives these examples: 1080p at 30 fps, 5 Mbps recommended; 480p at 30 fps, 4 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or older PC can sustain them. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio; it recommends RTMPS. Use the encoder settings supported by your chosen OBS encoder and YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.
- Test before the real broadcast. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast for a few minutes with representative audio and any expected movement. Watch OBS for encoding or dropped-frame warnings and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. A speed test can help assess upload capacity, but the live test also checks the complete path from PC to YouTube. If the stream struggles, reduce resolution or bitrate and test again.
- Start and end deliberately. When the test is healthy, start the intended broadcast and monitor it periodically. When finished, stop the stream in OBS and end the broadcast in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive outcome for longer streams. Plan a separate recording if you need a copy regardless.
Protect the audio and program rights
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead YouTube to replace the live image, warn the creator, interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before broadcasting music, documentary clips, sound recordings or other third-party material, confirm that your permission covers live streaming on YouTube; buying or subscribing to a track does not by itself establish those rights. If you have a license and Content ID is interrupting the stream, ask the rights holder about allowlisting your channel. See YouTube’s copyright issues with live streams.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live broadcast: verify that live streaming is enabled for the correct channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation to complete.
- YouTube receives no signal: check that OBS is using the stream URL and current key from the intended YouTube broadcast. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The broadcast has no sound: confirm the correct audio device is selected, play audio through it, and watch the OBS meters. Check that the source is not muted and that the intended audio is routed to the stream.
- The stream stutters or YouTube reports poor health: retest upload capacity, reduce bitrate or resolution, and simplify the scene. Also check whether the PC is overloaded; OBS notes that system compatibility alone does not ensure streaming performance.
- The stream is interrupted after music or a clip begins: review the rights for that material and any Content ID notification. Resolve rights or allowlisting with the rights holder rather than repeatedly restarting the same flagged program.
- You need an archive of a long broadcast: YouTube’s stated automatic archive case is streams under 12 hours. For a longer program, plan a separate local recording and ensure the spare PC has enough storage and capacity for streaming and recording together.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuing YouTube radio stream but you do not want a spare PC and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. The stream runs without a computer staying on at home, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
