To loop a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, run FFmpeg in a Docker container, put -stream_loop -1 before the video’s -i input, and send the output to the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Docker packages the runtime; it does not by itself keep a stream healthy. You still need to test the full path, protect the key, and monitor the broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube’s eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days: YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A prerecorded video file that the channel has the right to use and stream.
- Docker on a host that can access the video file and has sufficient processing capacity and upload bandwidth.
- FFmpeg available in the container image you choose. The exact image, tag, entrypoint, and permissions depend on that image; the command below is illustrative, not a verified Docker deployment recipe.
- A stream URL and key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio.
Use the actual server URL and protocol shown in Studio. The examples below assume a conventional RTMP/RTMPS output using the FLV muxer; they may need adjustment for the chosen FFmpeg build, input, or ingest settings.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream you intend to use with an encoder.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key into your private runtime configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions tell creators to enter these values in their encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in an article, screenshot, public repository, or command you may leave in shell history. Prefer your Docker environment’s secret mechanism or a secret store, and ensure logs do not print it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the runtime configuration.
Prepare the Docker runtime
Make the video available inside the container, for example by mounting a host media directory at /media. Confirm the chosen image actually contains FFmpeg, that its entrypoint invokes FFmpeg as expected, and that the container user can read the mounted file. Keep the stream URL and key outside a committed Dockerfile or Compose file; inject them through a private environment or secret mechanism supported by your deployment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Docker-specific details are image- and environment-dependent. Verify the image tag, mount syntax, permissions, secret injection, and restart behavior against the documentation for your selected image and Docker setup. A container restart policy can restart a process after exit, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast through host failure, network loss, or YouTube ingest problems.
Loop the file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 means infinite repetition, and options apply to the next input or output file. Put it before the relevant -i:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /media/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is a command shape, not a tested end-to-end recipe. Set the variables privately to the server URL and key shown for your stream, and adapt codec, pixel format, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and output protocol to the file, FFmpeg build, available compute, and YouTube’s current guidance. The loop flag repeats the input; it does not ensure the output is compatible or that the livestream remains online.
Match the output to YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube’s current encoder settings page recommends RTMPS for the standard RTMP path and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Confirm that your chosen encoder, protocol, and codec combination is supported for the stream you created; do not assume every combination works in every FFmpeg build. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate, and 720p at 30 fps with a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not guarantees of sufficient bandwidth for your particular connection. Choose the target resolution and frame rate based on the source and available upload capacity, then leave headroom.
YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio for stereo. Its advanced guidance lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 audio; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. Check the actual output and preview rather than assuming the source audio will pass through in a suitable format.

Test, preview, and start the stream
- Run the container with a short test or a stream created for testing before relying on the setup for a public event.
- Wait for the incoming preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check picture, audio, and stream health before choosing Go live.
- Once live, monitor the preview and health indicators, along with the host and network. YouTube recommends testing ahead, starting early, and monitoring the stream: YouTube streaming tips.
- When ending the event, stop the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder process. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a single longer session will be archived.
A local infinite input loop is not proof that a continuous public 24/7 broadcast is allowed for every account, content type, or jurisdiction. Check the current rules that apply to your channel and content before operating indefinitely.

| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Container says the media file cannot be opened | Check the host-to-container mount path, filename, capitalization, and read permissions for the container user. Confirm the mounted path matches the FFmpeg input path. |
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Verify the stream URL and key belong to the selected Studio stream, the output protocol matches the URL, and the host can reach the ingest endpoint. Keep credentials out of logs while checking configuration. |
| The preview appears but reports poor stream health | Check encoder output bitrate against YouTube’s settings for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test the host’s upload capacity and retain headroom for other traffic and fluctuations. |
| Video works but audio is missing or unsuitable | Inspect the source audio stream and FFmpeg output settings. Confirm the selected audio codec, sample rate, and bitrate match the intended stereo or 5.1 configuration. |
| The stream stops when the container or host exits | Inspect the FFmpeg/container exit reason and the host’s reliability. A restart policy may help recover from a process exit, but it is not a guarantee against host, connection, or ingest failure. Verify recovery with a test rather than assuming it works. |
| The key may have been exposed | Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room, then replace the stored runtime secret. Review files, logs, and shell history where the key might have been recorded. |
