You can use a Raspberry Pi to loop a local video into YouTube Live: a playback or encoding program reads the file repeatedly and sends an encoder feed to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream, copy its stream URL and key into your encoder, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then start the broadcast. The exact setup depends on the Pi model, operating system, video format and encoding workload; there is no single command verified for every combination.
What you need to decide first
Before configuring YouTube, settle the choices that determine whether the Pi can sustain the stream. A pre-encoded file may be sent without re-encoding if the playback tool and YouTube ingest settings support that workflow; changing resolution, frame rate or codec requires real-time encoding and adds processing load.
- Pi model and OS: Note the exact board and Raspberry Pi OS version. Encoding capability differs by model and pipeline.
- Source file: Check its container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate and duration. Confirm the playback tool can repeat it at end of file.
- Output settings: Choose a resolution and frame rate that the Pi can sustain and your upload connection can carry consistently.
- Encoding or playback: Decide whether to preserve a compatible pre-encoded stream or encode video on the Pi. Do not assume a codec is supported by both the board and encoder.
- Session length: Decide whether to use shorter scheduled sessions or attempt one long broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish archive behavior for a longer stream.
Raspberry Pi’s documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its camera workflow describes a low-latency option and can achieve 1080p30, but actual performance depends on the source and pipeline. The Raspberry Pi H.264 performance note, updated 6 May 2026, compares Pi 5 software encoding with Pi 4 hardware encoding and provides benchmark commands; those benchmarks are not a tested recipe for looping a file to YouTube. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation and the Raspberry Pi H.264 encoding performance note.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new stream or schedule one, following the current Studio prompts.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to connect an encoder and configure the stream in Live Control Room: YouTube Help: stream using an encoder.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s corresponding server/URL and stream-key fields. Treat the key like a password: do not paste it into a public command, screenshot, forum post or shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Use RTMPS rather than RTMP when the selected encoder supports it. YouTube says RTMPS encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. Confirm that the URL provided for your stream matches the protocol your encoder is using.
YouTube’s stream settings and latency guidance covers stream configuration and key handling. Studio labels may change; use the current Live Control Room controls for the stream you created.

Configure the loop and encoder
Use software that explicitly supports repeating a local file and configuring a YouTube encoder output. Set it to read the file continuously, use the stream URL and key from Studio, and choose settings within both the Pi’s sustained capability and YouTube’s ingest recommendations. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no farther apart than 4 seconds. Its H.264 table recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Pi or internet connection will sustain them. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the current table, including guidance for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs.
- Start with a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the file and Pi. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends up to 60 fps, but the board and processing pipeline must be able to produce the chosen output continuously.
- Set CBR if the encoder offers it, and set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose a bitrate the upload connection can reliably sustain, allowing for normal variation rather than targeting its theoretical maximum.
- Check how the software handles end-of-file looping, audio continuity, connection loss and process failure. These behaviors vary by tool and are not established by YouTube’s ingest guidance.
No particular FFmpeg or OBS command is given here because the correct options depend on the Pi, OS, source codecs and encoder version. Verify those details against the chosen tool’s current documentation before using a command, especially before exposing a stream key in shell history or process listings.

Test before starting the broadcast
- Start the encoder and let the feed reach YouTube before making the stream public or starting the broadcast, using the Live Control Room’s current controls.
- Inspect the preview for the right picture, audio, aspect ratio and synchronization. Check the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and correct warnings before proceeding.
- Run a meaningful test long enough to catch the end of the file and confirm that the loop restarts as intended. If you intend to run continuously, also test a network interruption and restart of the encoder and Pi.
- During operation, monitor stream health, network connectivity, CPU load, temperature and available storage. These are reliability checks for a local always-on system, not guarantees provided by Raspberry Pi or YouTube.
YouTube advises testing the feed and monitoring audio and video during a broadcast. See its live-streaming tips.
What can go wrong, and what to check
- No preview or incoming feed: Check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Studio, and the encoder uses the corresponding protocol. Replace the key in both places if it may have been exposed.
- Buffering or poor stream health: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Lower the output bitrate or resolution, then retest; a setting recommended by YouTube still has to fit the actual connection.
- Stutters or dropped frames: Check CPU load and temperature, especially if the Pi is encoding rather than passing through a compatible pre-encoded stream. Reduce the encoding workload or output settings and test again.
- Playback stops at the end of the file: Confirm that the selected software has explicit looping enabled and test an end-of-file transition. Do not assume every player restarts automatically.
- Stream stops after a network or process interruption: Check whether the encoder reconnects and whether the playback process itself restarts. Test recovery deliberately; automatic recovery behavior depends on the software and configuration.
- Broadcast or archive ends unexpectedly: Check the scheduled session and current Live Control Room state. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but this does not establish indefinite operation or archiving a longer single broadcast. For a long-running channel, consider scheduled shorter sessions rather than relying on one broadcast to continue or archive indefinitely.
Copyright, reused material and YouTube rules
Only stream material you have the rights to use, including music, footage and other audio or video inside the loop. A file being available online or already uploaded to YouTube does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming policies before scheduling a stream, and check any applicable channel restrictions in Studio. This technical setup does not determine whether a channel or a particular video qualifies for monetization; reused-content and copyright rules are separate from the encoder workflow.
