YouTube receives an encoder stream; it does not turn an ordinary uploaded video into a live loop. You can run the encoder on a computer or use a cloud playout service.
Before you set up the stream
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person streaming must be at least 16. Check eligibility before you schedule or promote the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Prepare the exhibition loop and clear its rights
Assemble the exhibition videos in the order you want viewers to see them. Add title cards or transitions if useful, and check the complete program—including footage, artwork, music, narration, and other third-party material—for streaming permissions. A license to show a work in a gallery does not necessarily cover transmitting it online. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2011 analysis describes public performance rights as applying to communicating or transmitting a work to the public; the rights required for a particular exhibition depend on the works, license terms, circumstances, and applicable law. Review the Copyright Office analysis and obtain legal advice when needed.
Set up a local computer and encoder
1. Create the YouTube Live broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live broadcast using the encoder option. YouTube supports encoder streaming for broadcasts; Studio’s interface may change over time. Start with YouTube’s live-streaming guide.
- Copy the broadcast’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. The stream key functions like a password: keep it private, and do not show it in public documents, screen shares, or recordings. See YouTube’s encoder stream settings guide.
2. Play the files continuously
Use a playback and encoder workflow that can play the prepared files in sequence and repeat them. OBS is one local option described in a secondary prerecorded-video workflow guide; its specific setup is not a YouTube-prescribed playlist feature. YouTube’s official help confirms encoder streaming generally, but does not prescribe an OBS playlist configuration or provide a native feature that converts a normal upload directly into a live loop.

The playback and encoder must keep running on the computer for a local setup. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification, so check equipment you already have before buying anything; no particular model is required by the cited guidance.
3. Confirm the live feed before announcing it
Start the encoder and check YouTube Studio to confirm that it is receiving a stable feed and that the intended video and audio are playing. Then monitor the broadcast and the loop rather than assuming the stream will continue unattended.

Watch for copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate the broadcast when its systems detect content. Even licensed third-party material may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. If you have permission to use material that triggers a match, ask the relevant owner about allowlisting the channel and check YouTube Studio for notices. Choose local or cloud playout
A local computer gives the gallery direct control over playback but leaves power, internet, and restart responsibilities with the gallery. Cloud playout can keep the encoder workflow running without a dedicated computer at the gallery. Compare options on recurring cost, control over sequence and overlays, outage recovery, monitoring, and who responds to rights notices. No comparative price, uptime, or service-quality figures are established here; the OBS-versus-cloud distinction is described in the secondary workflow guide.
