You can run a Tamil radio-style YouTube stream around the clock with an encoder, a verified channel, a music-rights plan, reliable internet and a local recording. YouTube does not provide music rights or guarantee uninterrupted playback: its systems may interrupt a live feed that contains detected third-party material, and a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Set up the station so you can monitor the feed, recover from outages and preserve your own recordings.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days.
- An encoder—a software or hardware tool that sends your audio and visual feed to YouTube.
- A playlist or scheduled program of Tamil content for which you have the necessary rights for the intended use and territories.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity to spare, plus a local recording setup and enough storage.
- A monitoring plan for stream health, audio, recording files and any interruption.
For music-only programming, a microphone is optional. Add one if presenters will speak, introduce songs or record station promos.
Prepare and enable the YouTube channel
- Verify your channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- Enable live streaming ahead of your planned launch. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until broadcast day.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream there, then locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in your encoder, and use YouTube’s reset option if you believe it has been exposed.
Clear the Tamil music rights before building the playlist
Confirm that your station has the rights needed for its actual repertoire, broadcast format and territories before sending music live. Depending on the material and use, relevant rights may include rights in the sound recordings and the underlying compositions. Requirements vary by jurisdiction; a general-purpose music license or a song’s availability online does not by itself establish that continuous live streaming is covered.
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects copyrighted material, the feed can be interrupted or terminated. Even if you have a license, a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to prevent detection from disrupting the broadcast; see YouTube’s guidance on live streams and Content ID claims.

Before choosing a catalog or licensing provider, check its current terms for the specific Tamil repertoire you plan to use, the countries where viewers may watch, continuous YouTube live use, any archived playback, and channel allowlisting. Do not assume that permission for on-demand uploads also covers a 24/7 live station.
Build and test the encoder feed
- Choose the program output. Decide whether the stream will show a static station image, a visualizer or other artwork while music plays. Use material you have the right to broadcast. Add a microphone only if you need spoken segments.
- Configure the encoder for YouTube. Use RTMP or RTMPS with an encoder format YouTube supports, such as H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Enter the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists 3 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. This is a reference point, not a universal requirement for a radio feed: choose settings the connection can sustain and test the complete audio-and-visual setup.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test. Send representative audio and the intended visual to YouTube, then wait for the preview. Confirm that audio is present, stable and at an appropriate level before making the stream public.
- Go live from Live Control Room. Once the preview and encoder status look right, start the broadcast using the controls shown for that stream. Keep Live Control Room open or otherwise maintain a way to check stream health.
- Verify the local recording. Start local recording and confirm that the output file is being created and growing. A recording indicator alone is not enough; check the actual file and available disk space.
Plan continuity, bandwidth and archives
Leave capacity for a stable upload
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the bitrate of the stream. Measure the connection under the same conditions in which the station will operate, including other devices sharing it. A disruption to the network can break the stream, so consider backup connectivity if a brief outage would matter to your audience. See YouTube’s network guidance and its streaming tips.

Do not rely on YouTube as the only archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance therefore makes a local recording important if you need a dependable copy of programs. Watch for recording growth and disk-space warnings, and decide in advance how you will preserve, divide or restart programs. A planned restart can help with archive management, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.
Make recovery an operating procedure
Keep a person or alerting process responsible for noticing an encoder disconnect, a silent feed, a failing recording or a YouTube warning. After an interruption, check the cause and preview the feed again before restarting. Neither an encoder nor YouTube can guarantee that a continuous station will never go offline.

Troubleshoot common problems
