How to Run a Prerecorded YouTube Stream on a Headless Ubuntu Server

A headless Ubuntu server can send a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live event through an encoder. Create the event in YouTube Studio, configure the ingest URL and key securely, then verify and monitor the feed remotely.

To stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event from a headless Ubuntu server, create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, configure software on the server to send the video file to that event’s ingest URL and stream key, then check the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room. The server sends the feed; YouTube Studio still manages the event. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. Check YouTube’s current account requirements if live streaming is not available for your channel.
  • A prerecorded video file accessible to the Ubuntu server.
  • A software encoder on the server that can read the file and send a live feed to YouTube. Confirm that your chosen encoder supports the ingest protocol and settings you plan to use.
  • Enough sustained upload capacity for the stream’s selected bitrate.

The YouTube guidance cited here documents the encoder workflow and recommended ingest settings, but does not establish an Ubuntu-specific installation procedure, FFmpeg command, universal server size, or service-supervision setup. Verify those details against current Ubuntu and encoder documentation before deploying them.

Create the YouTube Live event and get its ingest details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. YouTube’s guide explains the encoder workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s protected configuration. The key is a credential YouTube uses to accept and route the feed; do not publish it in a repository, screenshot, public example, or unprotected script. Reset it if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted ingest option. Obtain the RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room rather than assuming the default displayed URL is secure: YouTube warns the default may be ordinary RTMP. Your encoder must support RTMPS to use it. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Configure the Ubuntu encoder and stream settings

Run an encoder on Ubuntu that reads the prerecorded file and sends a continuous feed to the event’s ingest URL using its stream key. Configure it for the input media, target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Keep the key out of public or world-readable files, and follow the encoder’s current documentation for secure configuration and file-looping behavior.

YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 frames per second; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. Supported combinations depend on the encoder. Match the encoder output to YouTube’s current settings guidance and your connection’s sustained upload capacity.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Example bitrate: H.264 at 1080p/30 fps

YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measured Ubuntu server requirements; the source page does not show a publication date. Check its current table for other resolutions and codecs: YouTube encoder settings and bitrates.

Start, verify, and monitor the stream

  1. Start the encoder on the server and look for the incoming video in the event’s Live Control Room.
  2. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear and select Go live when ready. YouTube also provides auto-start and auto-stop controls in stream settings; enable them if you want the encoder to control those stages. The exact workflow depends on the event settings.
  3. Check the event’s channel or watch page from a viewer’s perspective, including on a mobile device. Monitor audio and video quality. YouTube recommends testing the setup and confirming viewers can access the stream; see YouTube live streaming tips.
  4. Because the Ubuntu server is headless, use the remote Live Control Room to inspect the feed. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a particular headless monitoring application.

End the event and check the archive

End the event using the controls appropriate to your chosen manual or auto-stop workflow, and stop the encoder as required by that workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For longer runs, confirm the event’s final state and archive behavior in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the same outcome.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No incoming feed: Recheck that the encoder has the correct event’s stream URL and key, that the event is ready to receive a feed, and that the server can reach the ingest endpoint. If using RTMPS, verify that the encoder supports it and that you copied the secure URL from Live Control Room.
  • Feed arrives but the event is not live: In a scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and click Go live, unless auto-start is enabled. Check the event’s stream settings.
  • Unstable or poor-quality video: Compare the configured bitrate and output settings with YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec and resolution. Confirm the server’s upload connection can sustain the bitrate and test before relying on the stream.
  • Audio or video is missing or incorrect: Check the encoder’s input-file selection and output audio/video configuration, then verify the preview and monitor the event from a viewer’s perspective.
  • The stream key may be exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder’s protected configuration with the replacement.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want prerecorded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without maintaining an Ubuntu server and encoder, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
