Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To play a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast with an NVIDIA GPU, add the video to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, connect OBS to the YouTube event with its stream key, and send the feed using a supported NVENC encoder. Set the output to YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, then check YouTube Studio to confirm the event—not just the OBS connection—is live. You do not need to buy a new GPU if your current card already offers a compatible encoder.
Before you start: prepare the YouTube event and OBS
- Verify that live streaming is available for your YouTube account, then create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Keep its Live Control Room open for the preview and stream-health status.
- In OBS, select the YouTube service and connect it using the account flow or the stream key for the event. Treat the key like a password: NVIDIA warns that anyone who has it can take over the stream. Do not include it in screenshots, posts, or shared files. NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS Guide
- For a scheduled broadcast, check the event’s current auto-start and auto-stop controls. The OBS community guide describes these as separate controls, but its page was last updated in 2021, so labels and behavior may have changed. OBS sending video does not necessarily mean the audience can already see a live event. OBS community guide to a first YouTube stream
Add the prerecorded video as an OBS Media Source
- In OBS, choose or create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and add Media Source.
- Enable Local File and choose the recording. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, as well as common audio formats. OBS Media Sources
- Enable Loop if you want playback to start again when the file ends. Loop is off by default. Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled by default, which helps when you activate the source after the event is ready.
- Use Use hardware decoding when available only as a source-playback option if appropriate for your setup. It is separate from selecting NVIDIA NVENC as the encoder for the outgoing live stream.
Choose NVENC and a YouTube-compatible output
Check your GPU and available codecs
OBS documents NVENC support on Windows and Linux starting with GeForce 750 Ti, 900-series Maxwell, or newer cards; it recommends Turing-generation NVENC for best results and advises keeping GPU drivers current. The encoder and codec options shown in OBS depend on your GPU generation, driver, and installed OBS version. An existing compatible card may be sufficient for prerecorded playback; an upgrade is not automatically necessary. OBS NVENC encoder guide
NVIDIA’s guide dated January 30, 2025 lists H.264 and HEVC for RTX 20- and 30-series cards, and H.264, HEVC, and AV1 for RTX 40- and 50-series cards. It recommends AV1 for YouTube on RTX 40-series hardware and HEVC otherwise. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 as supported input codecs. Confirm that your installed OBS exposes the codec you intend to use before configuring the stream. NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide · YouTube live encoder settings
Match bitrate, frame rate, and resolution
In OBS output settings, use constant bitrate (CBR), set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. Use AAC or MP3 audio; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo AAC. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. YouTube transcodes live input for viewers, so set the outgoing feed to the resolution and frame rate you actually need. YouTube live encoder settings

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check that your measured upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate throughout the broadcast. NVIDIA advises planning around 75% of measured upload speed to leave capacity for other applications; this is vendor guidance, not a YouTube requirement. NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide
Use RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP through an SSL connection. Google’s developer documentation specifies the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube endpoint and application path, and port 443. OBS normally configures the service and endpoint for you; this detail matters chiefly if you are troubleshooting a custom encoder or connection error. Google RTMPS ingestion documentation

Start the broadcast and verify playback
- Before the event, test with a representative part of the video, including its most demanding motion and audio. Confirm that the picture fits the canvas and that both video and sound play in OBS.
- When it is time to broadcast, start the OBS stream. Watch the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages while OBS connects and sends data.
- For a scheduled event, confirm whether YouTube requires a separate Go Live action, based on the event’s current auto-start setting. Do not assume a successful OBS connection has made the event public.
- Confirm that the event is actually live and that the intended scene, video, and audio are reaching YouTube. If the video must begin only once the event is live, use an intro or holding scene first, then activate the Media Source. Avoid letting the file play through before the event goes live unless you have confirmed how the source will restart.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS says it is streaming, but viewers cannot see the event | The scheduled YouTube event may still need a separate Go Live action, or the event is not ready. | Check the event and auto-start controls in Live Control Room; verify the public event status and preview. |
| The event is live, but the video is black or has ended | The source may be inactive, the file may not have loaded, or playback finished before the event went live. | Check the Media Source file and scene visibility. Activate the source when ready; enable Loop for continuous playback or restart the source. |
| OBS cannot connect or YouTube reports no incoming stream | The service, endpoint, stream key, or network path may be incorrect. | Recheck the selected YouTube service and key without exposing it. If using a custom encoder, verify the RTMPS endpoint, application path, and port 443 requirements. |
| Stream health reports dropped frames or unstable delivery | The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or competing network use may be consuming capacity. | Compare the chosen bitrate with YouTube’s table and measured upload capacity; reduce the output bitrate or resolve network congestion, then check health again. |
| NVENC or a codec choice is missing | The GPU generation, driver, operating system, or OBS version may not expose that encoder option. | Update the GPU driver, check OBS’s current NVENC compatibility documentation, and use a codec shown in your installed OBS and supported by YouTube. |
| Video plays but audio is missing or unsuitable | The source audio may be muted, routed incorrectly, or encoded with an unsuitable output setting. | Check OBS audio meters and source routing, then use AAC or MP3 and follow YouTube’s audio guidance. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A prerecorded video does not avoid YouTube’s copyright or channel rules merely because it is sent as a live stream. Before broadcasting, confirm you have the necessary rights to the footage, music, images, and other included material, and review the current YouTube rules that apply to your channel and content. Replaying material also does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube monetization or reused-content requirements; eligibility depends on YouTube’s current policies and the channel’s content as a whole. Consult YouTube’s current live streaming guidance and channel monetization policies.
