You can run a nonstop YouTube stream from a Raspberry Pi when the Pi is physically connected to the live camera or other input and configured to encode and send it to YouTube. That is not the same as running a Raspberry Pi in the cloud. For uploaded, prerecorded videos, a managed cloud service can loop the files without a Pi or an always-on home computer; that workflow does not, by itself, relay a live camera connected to your Pi.

Choose the setup that matches your video source

“Raspberry Pi in the cloud” can mean two different things. A Pi at your location can encode a live camera feed and upload it to YouTube. Alternatively, a cloud service can play uploaded recordings as a continuous YouTube broadcast. The second option avoids maintaining local streaming hardware, but it is for prerecorded media unless a provider explicitly supports ingesting your live Pi feed.

Decision Physical Raspberry Pi encoder Managed cloud loop for prerecorded video
Video source Live camera or another input connected to the Pi Uploaded prerecorded video, as documented for the cited YouTube-listed option
Local equipment Pi, compatible video source, stable power, and network connection No dedicated PC or camera is needed for the documented prerecorded workflow
What you operate Operating system, encoder, network, startup, and recovery The vendor operates cloud playback and encoding; check service limits and controls
Reliability evidence Startup and retry mechanisms can help, but do not eliminate power, source, network, or platform failures Check provider terms and claims; no independent uptime figures are established here
Cost comparison Hardware, power, and internet use Subscription or usage, storage, and transfer terms; comparable prices are not established

For a live camera, weigh where the camera must be, whether its upload connection is stable, and how you will maintain and access the Pi remotely. For prerecorded material, compare file controls, monitoring and reconnection features, archive behavior, and total current cost.

Set up a physical Pi to stream a live camera

The following is a deployment outline, not a universal parts list or one-size-fits-all command. The project examples use particular hardware and software; camera device names, codecs, audio mapping, and RTMP/RTMPS support vary by setup.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Enable live streaming on YouTube. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the planned broadcast.
  2. Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the stream settings into your encoder configuration. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a repository, screenshot, or shared log.
  3. Choose RTMPS when you want an encrypted connection. Use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room, rather than assuming the default RTMP address is encrypted. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection; see its RTMPS instructions.
  4. Install an encoder and configure the camera input. One documented project, YouTube-Pi4-StreamMachine, describes Raspberry Pi OS Lite, FFmpeg and camera tooling on a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, with an HQ camera or USB-camera path. It also calls for a stable 5V supply and network connectivity. These are that project’s implementation choices, not universal minimum requirements.
  5. Configure automatic startup and recovery. The Pi project documents a systemd service enabled at boot and connection retries. YouTube AutoEncoder also documents FFmpeg under systemd and recovery cases such as a host reboot or camera loss. These mechanisms can reduce manual restarts; neither project establishes a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
  6. Start the encoder and verify the preview. Confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives the feed before leaving the setup unattended. For a scheduled stream, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
  7. Check that the stream remains healthy. Confirm the camera image and any required audio, then verify the status in Live Control Room. Keep the stream key restricted to the Pi’s configuration and anyone who needs to administer the broadcast.

Do not copy a generic FFmpeg command without checking your camera’s device path, codec, audio mapping, bitrate, and the encoder’s RTMP/RTMPS support. The cited project documentation demonstrates particular configurations; it does not establish one safe command for every Pi and camera.

Understand what a cloud option can—and cannot—replace

For prerecorded videos

A cloud encoder can play uploaded recordings and send the resulting feed to YouTube while your local computer is off. YouTube’s verified encoder listings include Gyre for 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos without a camera or dedicated PC. That listing does not establish that every cloud product supports live camera input. Before choosing a service, confirm supported media, current feature limits, account permissions, broadcast rotation and archive behavior, and the full current cost.

For a live camera attached to a Pi

A cloud relay would need a supported way to ingest the Pi’s live feed—such as a network feed or relay—and deliver it continuously to YouTube. The provider must document compatibility with that live-input workflow. A service that loops uploaded files is not evidence that it can stream a live Pi camera.

Plan for recovery, archives, and YouTube rules

Recovery is more than restarting FFmpeg

Systemd startup and reconnect attempts can help after a process or connection interruption, but they cannot fix every failure. The Pi, camera, power supply, local network, internet connection, encoder, and YouTube ingest are separate possible failure points. Decide how you will notice a failed feed, restore camera input, and confirm that the broadcast has resumed; project-level retry support is not a promise of uninterrupted service.

Do not assume a nonstop broadcast will have one complete archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a full archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. If keeping a complete recording matters, use a separate recording plan and check the platform’s current live-stream guidance.

Use material you have the right to broadcast

A continuous stream does not change the need to respect copyright or YouTube’s applicable policies. Use footage, music, and other material you own or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s current rules for live streaming and monetization before broadcasting. Do not assume that looping a recording makes it eligible for an archive, recommendation, or monetization.

Common problems and practical checks

  • You cannot go live yet: If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours and recheck Live Control Room.
  • YouTube receives no feed: Recheck the stream URL and key against Live Control Room, confirm the encoder is running, and verify the Pi’s network connection. Keep the key private while checking logs or configuration.
  • The connection fails when using RTMPS: Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and that you copied the RTMPS address supplied in Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation explains the encrypted transport.
  • The service starts but the camera is missing: Check the configured camera device path, camera connection, and the capture settings required by your specific camera. The cited Pi implementations do not define universal device names.
  • The stream stops after a reboot or disconnect: Check whether the systemd service is enabled and inspect its status and logs. Verify that the retry behavior applies to the failure you encountered; a retry loop cannot restore a disconnected camera or failed network on its own.
  • A cloud product will not accept the Pi’s live feed: Confirm that the product supports live input or relay, not merely uploaded-video looping. These are different workflows.
  • You expected a full recording of a long broadcast: YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; do not rely on it as a full-archive guarantee for longer streams.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream—not to broadcast a live Pi camera—StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo handles 24/7 looping and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
