You can run a YouTube Live showroom stream from a Mac mini by sending video through an encoder such as OBS, using a YouTube stream key, and keeping the Mac mini, encoder, network, and power available. For a stable starting point, YouTube recommends RTMPS and CBR; its settings table specifies 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and a 2-second keyframe interval. Test the setup before opening the showroom stream, and plan separately for interruptions and recording: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not for a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so start well before the planned launch.
- A Mac mini and an encoder configured to send a live video feed. YouTube documents computer-based encoder streaming and lists OBS among its encoder options; that does not establish that every Mac mini model can sustain a particular resolution or codec.
- A reliable internet connection with enough outbound upload bandwidth for the full stream bitrate, plus headroom for fluctuations and other network use.
- A showroom video and audio source, with a plan to keep the feed useful and appropriate while no one is present to operate it continuously.
- An operator plan for power, network, and encoder interruptions. A nonstop broadcast is not unattended failover: an interruption can break the stream.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new encoder stream or schedule one for a planned start.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the stream key as the stream’s password and address; treat it as sensitive access information and do not share or publish it.
- Before starting, confirm the encoder is using the intended stream and key. If the key is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder settings also recommend constant bitrate (CBR). RTMPS is the straightforward choice for standard ingestion; HLS is a separate option for supported encoders and can have higher latency.
Choose video settings your connection can sustain
A conservative 1080p starting point
For an uncomplicated static showroom, 1080p30 is a reasonable starting point to test, not a universal best setting. YouTube’s settings table recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval.

Do not choose resolution or bitrate by download speed alone. YouTube notes that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and that network disruption can break a stream. Its streaming tips recommend available bandwidth 20% above the total bitrate. For a 5 Mbps video stream, allow at least 6 Mbps of stable upload capacity for that stream, with additional room if audio, other devices, or network variation raises the total.

Check outbound upload capacity at the location and time the showroom will stream. A speed test is only a snapshot: repeat it under representative conditions, especially if the connection is shared. If upload is unstable, reduce the output bitrate or resolution and rehearse again rather than pushing the connection to its limit.
Rehearse, launch, and monitor
- Configure the encoder with the chosen YouTube server URL, stream key, protocol, video settings, and audio format.
- Run a rehearsal using representative showroom motion and sound. Include any overlays, product demonstrations, music, or announcements that will be part of the real broadcast.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before making the stream public or starting a scheduled broadcast.
- Listen to the audio and inspect the picture on the actual stream, not only the encoder’s local preview. Confirm the feed remains stable as the scene changes.
- During operation, monitor video, audio, and YouTube’s stream health. Arrange someone who can respond to encoder, network, or power failures; a Mac mini setup by itself does not provide unattended recovery.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete recording. If you need a retained archive, arrange a separate recording or use shorter, segmented broadcasts, then verify current YouTube behavior for your channel and workflow.

Segmentation can make recording and restart planning more manageable, but it also creates deliberate stream transitions and opportunities for interruption. Decide whether continuous availability or a dependable archive matters more, and plan the broadcast schedule accordingly.
Troubleshoot common failures
