You can loop a prepared Kannada devotional video from a Raspberry Pi to YouTube Live by sending it from FFmpeg to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The reliable approach is to confirm rights first, match FFmpeg’s inputs to your media, use real-time pacing and YouTube-compatible encoder settings, then test the exact setup before relying on it for a long broadcast. A Raspberry Pi is a possible host, but its ability to sustain your chosen encode profile must be measured on your own board.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, and a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio.
- A Raspberry Pi single-board computer, a stable network connection, and an installed FFmpeg build with the required input, output protocol, and encoders. Do not assume a particular Pi model can sustain a given encode profile without testing it.
- A prepared media source and the rights to use every recording, composition, image, animation, and video segment in it.
- The server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Use the RTMPS endpoint where available and keep the key private.
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer scheduled broadcast, check YouTube Studio’s current options and plan separately for the live session and any archive.
Can I livestream devotional songs I found online?
Not merely because they are devotional, traditional-sounding, or publicly available. The subject matter does not grant permission to use a recording, composition, performance, image, or video. YouTube’s livestream terms require you to hold the necessary rights for use of live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights holders. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects content, a placeholder may replace the stream; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed content can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and obtain the permissions that apply to your specific content before broadcasting.

Choose the right FFmpeg input for your source
The command structure depends on how your audio and visuals are packaged. Inspect the media before going live and confirm that it contains the intended streams, plays correctly, and has a suitable duration. FFmpeg documents input looping with -stream_loop; option behavior can vary with installed builds, so check ffmpeg -h full on the Pi. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the relevant command-line options.
| Source layout | Approach | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One video file containing both picture and devotional audio | Loop the file as one FFmpeg input. | Confirm the file has both video and audio streams and that their content is correct. |
| A still image or visual file plus one or more audio files | Use separate visual and audio inputs, then map the intended video and audio streams explicitly. | Check the image/video duration and dimensions, audio duration, and which streams the output maps. |
| A playlist of media files | Build and verify the playlist or concatenated source before sending it to YouTube. | Do not assume mixed formats, codecs, or durations will loop seamlessly; test transitions and audio continuity. |
For file playback intended to behave like a live stream, -re reads the input at its native rate rather than allowing FFmpeg to send it as fast as the machine can process it. Put -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to when you want indefinite looping. If audio and video are separate inputs, the loop and pacing choices may need to be applied to each relevant input, and stream mapping must match the actual file layout.
How do I stream a video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg?
The following is an illustrative pattern for a single MP4 containing audio and video, not a tested Raspberry Pi command or a platform-certified profile. It assumes a 720p30 output and a compatible local FFmpeg build. Replace the endpoint with the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; adjust output settings to match the source, board capacity, and upload bandwidth.

The sample’s 2.5 Mbps video bitrate is an example within YouTube’s published 720p30 range, not a universal recommendation. Re-encoding with libx264 consumes CPU; a Pi may not sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and settings. A stream-copy approach can reduce encode work, but only if the source’s codecs and container are compatible with YouTube ingest and the stream’s other requirements. Check the installed encoders and protocol support, and measure the exact workload locally.

Set encoder targets YouTube publishes
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For 30 fps, -g 60 represents a two-second GOP. YouTube lists stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Its recommended video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps is 2–6 Mbps. These are platform targets, not evidence that a particular Pi can encode them continuously. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose a resolution and bitrate that both the board and your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the total streaming bitrate. Include audio and any stream overhead when planning; a download speed result does not establish your available upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips.
Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key safely
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Find the encoder connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key for the stream you created.
- Where the normal URL is displayed, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS endpoint if available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL.
- Put the exact URL, path, and key into FFmpeg’s output target. Do not expose the key in a public script, shared terminal transcript, or repository. Prefer a protected configuration or environment file over shell history that other users can read.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public or using the final go-live control.
The endpoint details are specific to the stream and can change; copy them from the current Live Control Room rather than reusing an old example. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

- Run the exact media, FFmpeg build, output profile, and network path you intend to use.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for both picture and sound. Confirm the image is framed as intended, audio is audible and continuous, and the correct content is playing.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and confirm the public or unlisted watch page plays as expected.
- Measure stable upload capacity. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate.
- Let the setup run for a representative duration. Monitor CPU load, temperature, dropped frames, storage access, and remote playback on the Pi; these are practical checks, not official YouTube or Raspberry Pi requirements.
- Decide how the process will restart after a network interruption or power loss, and test that recovery plan before depending on continuous operation.
YouTube’s own instructions recommend testing and monitoring the stream. A speed test or brief preview alone does not establish that a Raspberry Pi will sustain a long-running encode. The available community example of Pi-to-YouTube FFmpeg use is not a current hardware benchmark; measure your chosen board and workload rather than inferring capability from another setup.

How do I loop a video on YouTube Live?
YouTube Live does not make an uploaded video loop by itself in this workflow. FFmpeg repeatedly reads the local file and sends its output as a live encoder stream. For one combined file, use -stream_loop -1 before its -i input and -re to pace playback in real time. Check the end-to-start transition: if the file has silence, a fade, or mismatched audio/video lengths, that behavior repeats on every pass.
Can I use a Raspberry Pi for a YouTube live stream?
A Raspberry Pi is a plausible host for this setup, but the available evidence does not establish a specific current model’s sustained encoding capability. The actual load depends on the board, FFmpeg build, source codecs and dimensions, whether you re-encode or stream-copy, output resolution and frame rate, and other processes running at the same time. Test the exact workload while monitoring load, temperature, dropped frames, and remote playback before scheduling a long stream.
For continuous use, also account for stable power, storage, cooling, and network access. These are operational considerations rather than a model-specific parts list: the right setup depends on your board and workload.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming signal in Live Control Room | Wrong URL, path, protocol, port, key, or unavailable RTMPS support in the local FFmpeg build. | Copy the current endpoint and key again; check that the output uses the RTMPS URL exactly and confirm the build supports the protocol. |
| Video appears but audio is missing | The input has no audio, the wrong stream was selected, or separate inputs were not mapped as intended. | Inspect the file’s streams, verify audio playback locally, and map the correct audio stream explicitly. |
| FFmpeg sends the file too quickly | File playback is not paced in real time. | Use -re for file input playback intended to behave as a live stream. |
| Frames drop, output stutters, or the Pi becomes overloaded | The board may not sustain the selected encode profile, or the network may not sustain the outgoing bitrate. | Check local load and dropped frames; reduce output demands or consider compatible stream copy, then retest. Verify stable upload capacity with headroom. |
| Stream disconnects or health degrades | Unstable upload, power, network, or process continuity. | Check the connection and power, watch stream health, and test a restart plan for network or power loss. |
| Live output is interrupted or replaced | YouTube may have detected third-party content, or rights and Content ID allowlisting may be unresolved. | Review the rights for every included element and address the relevant rights-holder or YouTube notice; do not assume devotional content is exempt. |
