You can run a continuous YouTube stream from an old laptop with OBS, but only while the laptop, power, encoder and internet connection keep working. For prerecorded, low-motion material, start with a simple OBS scene, a conservative bitrate and a private or unlisted test at the location where you plan to stream. YouTube’s recommended settings are starting points—not a guarantee that an older machine or a particular Indian connection can sustain a stream.
Can an old laptop run YouTube Live continuously?
Possibly, if it can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate without overloading, remain powered and awake, and hold a stable upload connection. There is no specific minimum laptop specification established here for continuous streaming, and compatibility with OBS alone does not prove that a computer can stream adequately. OBS says its needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
For a prerecorded documentary or other low-motion content, a static image or simple visual scene is a sensible place to start. A live camera, animated overlays, multiple sources or demanding effects add work for an older computer. “Continuous” should not be read as guaranteed uninterrupted or indefinite: power cuts, overheating, sleep settings, software problems, ISP outages or a dropped YouTube connection can stop the broadcast.
Prepare YouTube Live before stream day
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete it ahead of your planned start. Check YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for current eligibility and steps.
- Create a broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, and obtain its server URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Connect OBS and confirm the signal. Enter the server URL and key in OBS’s stream settings, start streaming from OBS, then verify that Live Control Room receives the feed before you go public.
Choose OBS settings an older laptop can test
Start with a simple scene
Use one static or otherwise simple visual source and only the audio you need. Avoid beginning with several animated layers or effects. This reduces unnecessary scene complexity, but it cannot compensate for a laptop that is overheating, underpowered or unable to encode the selected output.

Set a conservative video mode and bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. Its listed minimums for those modes are 3 Mbps and 0.4 Mbps respectively. These are platform bitrate figures, not promises of stable streaming or proof that an old laptop can encode the setting. For a low-end laptop, test 480p30 first if 720p30 causes encoder overload or unstable delivery. Choose a reliable quality for the connection rather than treating the highest available resolution as the target. The settings page also covers other output modes; do not assume the figures above apply to a different resolution, frame rate or codec.

Match bitrate to sustained upload
Measure upload speed at the laptop’s actual streaming location, ideally more than once and at times representative of your intended broadcast. Download speed does not answer whether the stream can be sent reliably. YouTube recommends testing the connection and choosing quality that it can sustain.
OBS’s troubleshooting guidance suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point in that troubleshooting context. Treat it as a rule of thumb, not an India-wide target or guarantee: other devices and traffic may share the connection, and momentary speed-test results do not establish sustained capacity. Make the laptop and network more dependable
- Use reliable power. Keep the laptop connected to power and check its power and sleep settings so it does not suspend during the broadcast. A power cut or failing charger can still end the stream.
- Watch temperature and workload. Keep vents unobstructed and close unnecessary applications. If OBS reports encoding overload or the laptop becomes unstable, reduce output demands and retest; no general hardware specification can guarantee success.
- Prefer Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is an option only if both the laptop and router have compatible ports. It cannot fix an ISP outage or inadequate upload capacity.
- Consider data use. At constant video bitrate alone, 4 Mbps transfers about 43.2 decimal GB per day; 8 Mbps transfers about 86.4 decimal GB per day. These are arithmetic estimates before audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions and differences in billing units—not YouTube-published totals. Check your own broadband or mobile plan’s data policy rather than assuming a national rate or allowance.
Test before relying on a long broadcast
- Set up a private or unlisted test broadcast in YouTube Studio and connect OBS.
- Use representative material: similar audio, motion and scene elements to the planned program.
- Let the test run long enough to expose problems that a brief connection check might miss, while recognizing that a successful test cannot guarantee a later session.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room and OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame statistics.
- If OBS shows rising dropped frames or a yellow or red connection indicator, reduce bitrate or output demands, use wired networking if practical, and test again. These signals point to a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; they do not by themselves identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, the ISP or competing network traffic.
- If the encoder overloads while the connection remains healthy, simplify the scene or reduce the output resolution or frame rate, then repeat the test.
YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Keep the test private or unlisted until you have checked the feed and are ready for the intended audience.
Plan for interruptions and archives
A laptop-based stream depends on the computer staying awake, powered, cool enough to operate and connected. OBS can report connection trouble, but it cannot prevent a household power interruption or an ISP failure. Do not promise viewers an uninterrupted broadcast simply because a test worked.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer continuous broadcast, do not assume an archive will be available. If keeping a recording matters, plan a separate recording or shorter scheduled segments, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before depending on a particular archive workflow.

These approaches solve different bottlenecks. OBS uses your laptop as the encoder; a cloud service for prerecorded material runs the stream from its own infrastructure, so the home computer does not need to remain on. Check each service’s current terms, price and availability for your location rather than assuming a cloud option is free or available in India.
