YouTube requires an encoder configured with its stream URL and key; VLC’s documented playlist-broadcast example sends sequential files over HTTP to a receiver on a local network. Treat playback, encoding, and the YouTube event as separate jobs, and verify the installed software’s repeat and ingest behavior before relying on a continuous stream.
How VLC playback and YouTube Live fit together
A continuous YouTube Live setup has two distinct technical parts: something plays the media files in sequence, and an encoder sends an audio-video feed to YouTube. YouTube calls the watched event a broadcast and the transmission settings used to send audio-video a stream; they are related but separate concepts. YouTube’s Live API documentation describes the distinction.
VLC Desktop 3.0 documents a VLM playlist broadcast over HTTP. Its example uses multiple inputs on one channel, an HTTP output, and sout-keep so streaming does not break at a file boundary. VLC says the next input runs when the previous input’s streaming ends. That documented example is a local-network broadcast to a receiving device, not an official recipe for sending RTMP directly to YouTube. It also documents sequential playback, not an infinite repeat setting. VLC 3.0’s VLM documentation explains the example.
Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder destination

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream setup. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it, or include it in public configuration examples.

Configure an encoder to send its output to that server URL using the stream key. Start the encoder feed and check YouTube’s preview and stream health. YouTube says a watch page is created when the encoder starts.

If you scheduled an event, follow its separate Live Control Room flow. After the preview appears, the event may require you to select Go live; starting the encoder and starting a scheduled broadcast are not necessarily the same action. See YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance for the setup flow.

Configure a VLC playlist—and understand the repeat limitation

Prepare the media files you want to play and decide the order. Check that the files can be read by your chosen playback and encoding setup, and that their audio and video formats are suitable for the encoder you will use.

In VLC 3.0’s VLM configuration, define a channel with multiple
inputentries and an HTTP output, following VLC’s documented example. The example’ssout-keepoption is intended to keep streaming from breaking when one file ends and the next begins. -
Use an encoder that can receive the VLC output and send an encoder feed to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. VLC’s documented HTTP-to-local-receiver example does not establish how to configure a direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMP output. Do not assume that changing the output destination alone makes the workflow supported.

Before depending on a long-running broadcast, verify the actual repeat control in the installed software, file handoff, audio continuity, and YouTube preview and stream health. The cited VLM example establishes sequential inputs, not perpetual looping. If you need files to repeat indefinitely, use a playback or encoder setup whose repeat behavior you can confirm in the version you are running.
Keep a continuous stream manageable
Plan how broadcasts end and archives are handled
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not mean a single uninterrupted archive will cover an indefinitely long 24/7 feed. Decide how broadcasts should be split or ended, and check YouTube’s current controls for your event and channel before leaving a stream running continuously. The under-12-hour archive statement comes from YouTube Help; it is a platform rule, not a guarantee of an archive for a longer stream.

Check rights and channel suitability
Only stream media you have the rights to use, including its music, footage, and other included material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before scheduling or monetizing a playlist. A playlist that plays continuously is a technical setup; it does not by itself establish that the material qualifies for monetization or complies with platform rules.
Choose between VLC-only, an intermediary encoder, and a cloud service
The official VLC example supports sequential HTTP broadcasting to a local receiver, while YouTube’s setup requires an encoder destination configured with the server URL and stream key. The cited documentation does not confirm a direct VLC-only YouTube workflow or establish which intermediary software will repeat files reliably. Compare options against the points below rather than assuming they behave alike.
- Version documentation: Does the documentation for the exact installed version describe the output protocol and destination you need?
- Playlist behavior: Can you confirm repeat, file transitions, and uninterrupted audio for your playlist?
- YouTube ingest: Does the encoder accept YouTube’s configured destination and show a healthy preview?
- Operations: What happens after a process restart, network loss, or a YouTube disconnect, and how will you monitor it?
- Equipment and software: Does the method require a computer and an intermediary encoder to remain running?
