For ordinary stereo audio sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS, AAC is the simplest default: YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported and recommends 44.1 kHz at 128 Kbps for stereo. First confirm which ingestion protocol your encoder uses; YouTube’s HLS guidance lists a different set of supported codecs and comes with a latency trade-off.
How to choose an audio codec for a 24/7 YouTube radio stream
Choose the codec for the signal your encoder sends to YouTube, not for what you assume every listener will receive. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. The input codec is therefore not a promise about the playback codec.
Check whether your encoder uses RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
Codec compatibility depends on the live ingestion route. Check the protocol selected in your encoder or streaming service before choosing an audio format.
| Ingestion route | Codecs YouTube lists | Stereo guidance | 5.1 guidance | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps | Only AAC is supported for 5.1; 48 kHz, 384 Kbps | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. |
| HLS | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps | 48 kHz, 384 Kbps | HLS sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP. Choose it when your workflow or supported format calls for HLS, not simply to access another codec. |
These are YouTube’s documented live-ingestion settings, not universal audio-engineering rules. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for stream encoding; CBR is an encoding-mode setting, not a codec.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AAC or MP3 for YouTube Live stereo audio?
Both AAC and MP3 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS. AAC is a sensible default if your encoder supports it, using YouTube’s recommended 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps stereo bitrate. That recommendation is about configuration and compatibility; YouTube’s guidance does not establish that AAC sounds better than MP3 in a controlled listening comparison.
For an HLS workflow, YouTube also lists AC3 and EAC3 alongside AAC. Do not treat the HLS list as support for RTMP/RTMPS: the codec options depend on the selected ingestion protocol.

Keep stereo and 5.1 settings separate
A stereo radio stream should use the stereo recommendation, not the higher 5.1 figures. If you are deliberately sending 5.1 surround audio, YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports it only with AAC and recommends 48 kHz at 384 Kbps. The HLS guide also gives 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. These surround settings are not a reason to change a conventional stereo stream.
Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Confirm the protocol and settings. Check the encoder’s destination or output configuration to verify RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS, then select a codec supported for that route and set the appropriate sample rate and bitrate.
- Run a preflight with representative material. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream before going live. For a radio channel, use the intended audio and the same streaming setup you plan to leave running.
- Check stream health and messages. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health information and review messages during the event. For a continuous station, pay attention to sustained stability rather than assuming a brief successful start proves the whole setup will remain stable.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations and testing advice are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; its HLS requirements and latency notes are in Set up an HLS stream. Platform requirements can change, so verify the applicable guide when configuring a new workflow.

What codec guidance does—and does not—tell you about sound
The published live-stream guidance establishes supported formats and recommended settings. It does not provide controlled listening tests proving that AAC, MP3, AC3, or EAC3 sounds best for radio at a given bitrate, nor does it establish codec-specific reliability rates for 24/7 operation. Perceived sound depends on factors including the source audio, bitrate, encoder implementation, and listening conditions. Choose a compatible format and test the actual signal chain rather than treating the codec name alone as a quality guarantee.
