You can keep a study video live on YouTube around the clock by sending a continuous encoder feed from VLC or FFmpeg to a YouTube Live event. The essential pieces are an eligible channel, the event’s stream URL and key, a computer with sustained upload capacity, and a tested way to keep the feed running and recover from interruptions. YouTube documents ingest settings and FFmpeg documents looping features, but the available documentation does not establish a complete, current VLC-to-YouTube recipe or guarantee that any loop command will run reliably for 24 hours. This guide separates what you can configure from what you must test with your own files and software.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. A first-time activation can take time, so enable it well before your planned launch: YouTube live-streaming readiness.
- A video or playlist you have the rights to stream, plus a computer that can remain on and connected for the duration. The computer runs the encoder; your upload connection must sustain the chosen stream bitrate with spare capacity.
- A scheduled or created event in YouTube Live Control Room, where you can copy its stream URL and stream key.
- A plan to check the preview and playback and to respond if the encoder or connection stops sending video.
For a documentary-style study stream, decide in advance whether the content is a single long recording, a playlist, or a repeated short loop. A continuous broadcast is not automatically a continuous archive, and a loop does not change the underlying rights or content.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the event and choose its audience and visibility settings.
- In the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the URL YouTube provides rather than assuming a fixed endpoint.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected with TLS/SSL; the actual ingest address should come from the control room: YouTube encoder setup and YouTube RTMPS guidance.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s streaming output settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the event. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s stream-key controls to reset it: Manage stream keys.
- Keep the event in preview until you have checked picture, sound, and stream health. Start the public broadcast only when the preview behaves as expected.
Choose settings that YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder and connection can sustain; settings are not interchangeable across codecs and frame rates. See the full, current table at YouTube recommended encoder settings.
| Output example | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
These are YouTube’s recommendations on its encoder settings page checked in 2026, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection will hold a stream. Leave upload headroom for normal network variation and other traffic, then test the real output. If the stream drops frames or the preview reports poor connection, reduce the output bitrate or resolution before going live.

Looping with FFmpeg: what the documentation supports
FFmpeg has documented looping mechanisms, including a loop filter whose loop=-1 setting means infinite looping for that filter. That fact alone does not make a universal 24/7 YouTube command: input streams, timestamps, audio continuity at the loop point, encoder availability, and reconnection behavior vary by file and installed FFmpeg build. FFmpeg also emphasizes that command-line option order matters. Consult the official documentation for the exact options supported by your build: FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg loop filter documentation.
Prepare and validate the media first
- Inspect the source file’s video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, and codec. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the encoder and formats you intend to use.
- Check the end-to-start transition in both picture and sound. A hard audio cut, silence, timestamp discontinuity, or a source with no audio can produce an undesirable loop even when looping itself works.
- Decide whether to preserve the source format or re-encode. Re-encoding can give you control over output bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes, but adds CPU or GPU load. Stream parameters must still match YouTube’s ingest guidance.
- Build a command using the actual event URL and key, the input path, and options valid for your installed FFmpeg version. Do not publish or share the key in scripts, screenshots, logs, or public repositories.
The source documentation establishes the looping feature, not a tested end-to-end recipe for every file or FFmpeg build. Do a trial broadcast with the exact source and settings before scheduling a public all-day stream; do not assume that a command that starts successfully will reconnect after a network or YouTube interruption.

What VLC can and cannot be prescribed here
VLC may be part of a local playback or streaming workflow, but the documented material available for this guide does not establish a current, authoritative VLC command or exact interface sequence for direct YouTube ingest and reliable 24/7 playlist repetition. In particular, a playlist repeat option should not be treated as proof that streaming resumes after a network failure. Avoid copying unverified sout strings or assuming VLC and FFmpeg handle the same source and reconnect conditions identically.
If you choose VLC, verify the output settings and playlist behavior against the help for your installed VLC version, then validate the actual YouTube preview and a playback device before relying on it. If direct control of looping, encoding, and output parameters is important, FFmpeg’s documented options provide a basis for building and testing that workflow, but still require file-specific validation.

Test before announcing a 24/7 broadcast
- Run the intended media through the encoder using the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and event type you plan to use live.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for a stable image and audio, and review any stream-health warnings.
- Open the unlisted or public playback on a separate device and network if possible. Listen for loop seams, missing audio, clipping, or long silences; look for frozen frames, stutter, or unexpected black video.
- Let the test run long enough to expose the behavior most likely to fail: a loop boundary, playlist transition, or temporary connection interruption. Confirm what happens after the interruption rather than assuming automatic recovery.
- While live, continue monitoring playback and stream health. YouTube advises creators to test the encoder and monitor stream quality: YouTube live-streaming readiness.
Copyright, reused content, and archive planning
Rights and monetization are separate questions
Only stream recordings, music, artwork, and other material you have permission to broadcast. A study purpose or a continuously repeated format does not itself establish that you hold those rights. The setup guidance cited here does not determine whether a particular loop complies with YouTube copyright rules, reused-content policies, or monetization eligibility. Check the current YouTube policy that applies to your content and account rather than treating a technically accepted stream as approval.
A 24-hour live feed is not a promised 24-hour VOD
YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a longer broadcast will be archived as one complete video. If a complete archive matters, plan separate recordings or shorter events and confirm YouTube’s current archive behavior before launch: YouTube encoder setup.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room shows no incoming video | Wrong event URL or key, stream not started in the encoder, or key copied incorrectly | Copy the URL and key again from the event’s Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Preview is unstable or drops frames | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or encoder output is too demanding | Check stream health, reduce bitrate or resolution, close other upload-heavy applications, and test again with headroom. |
| Video arrives but audio is absent or cuts at the loop point | Input has no usable audio stream, audio mapping/settings are wrong, or the source transition is abrupt | Inspect the file’s streams and listen to the loop locally, then verify the encoded preview before going live. |
| Loop does not repeat as expected | The selected tool or option does not apply to the current playlist/input, or command options are ordered incorrectly | Verify behavior against the documentation for your exact software version and test the actual input across a complete loop before broadcast. |
| Feed stops after an internet or ingest interruption | The local encoder or network did not reconnect automatically | Confirm whether the encoder is still running, restore connectivity, and restart or reconnect the feed as needed. Test recovery behavior beforehand; looping media is not the same as reconnect handling. |
